Activity Description

1. Research and Development (Core research activities undertaken)

Animal Health Program:

Under PPR ALP project, a local isolate of PPR virus (PAK-Fjg-07/NARC4) from AHP repository is being attenuated for the development of PPR vaccine by serial passages on Vero cells. During current month 44 serial passages have been completed.

RT-PCR for PPR was optimized using newly designed N gene primers of PPR virus and whole Nucleoprotein N gene of PPR consisting of 1578 nucleotides was successfully amplified.

Two PPRV suspected swab samples collected from camels in an outbreak in Thar, Sindh were inoculated onto Vero cells for PPR virus isolation.

One hundred and sixty five honeybee Apis mellifera colonies were examined for the infection of honey bee diseases, mite and off season management at NARC, Islamabad. Two colonies were found infected with American foul brood (AFB) disease. For confirmation of the disease a tooth pick was inserted into the body of suspected pre-pupa and drawn out which showed ropiness. For the control of AFB disease, Terramycin 250 mg. was added in five liter sugar syrup and fed to the diseased colonies at weekly interval.

Nine colonies were found infested with chalk brood disease. For the control of diseased colonies supplemental feeding by adding Lysovate syrup was given at weekly interval.

Hive debris colonies were observed for the infestation of eco-parasitic mites by placing mites collection trays in the bottom board of each colony. The data showed that six colonies were infested with Varroa destructor while 150 colonies were found infested with Tropilaelap clarea. One Fluvalinate strip @ 10 bee frames was supplied for the management of mites.
