InfrastructureCentral Piling have had significant experience of working on Highways schemes, Water Industry projects and works adjacent to Railways. This has required close liaison by us with regulatory bodies such as, network Rail and the Highways Agency, to ensure that the necessary design and health and safety documentation is in place prior to works commencing.

The nature of these structures also tends to require large quantities of materials to be provided in our works. This presents logistical challenges, such as, the use of handling cranes within confined spaces. However, we believe our team can ensure minimal disruption to the surrounding environment.

Recent projects include two road bridges in Essex and a contiguous wall on the A325 in Farnborough for volker Fitzpatrick.

Page 4: Central Piling

This ensures that our customers have equipment allocated to them prior to final design development and contract negotiation.

ResidentialWe have a strong track record in the residential sector, having provided services in this field for 27 years. Projects vary from small scale house extensions, to large scale Public Sector Housing Association developments, such as The vange in Basildon.

The fast moving pace of many of the projects in this sector has led to us developing close ties with companies such as Cala Homes (South East), Hill Partnerships, Asprey Homes and Bugler Developments. This ensures that our customers have equipment allocated to them prior to final design development and contract negotiation.

Where required, Central Piling is able to enter into Collateral Warranty agreements with Main Contractors and Clients. Professional Indemnity cover of up to £10 million is provided. For self-builders or developers new to the Piling industry our estimators take care to ensure that all attendance items are explained and agreed prior to commencement.

CommercialCentral Piling have undertaken a wide variety of commercial sector projects such as a new Waitrose distribution warehouse in Bracknell for RG Carter, Watford Leisure Centre for Pellikaan, and a 16m deep retaining wall for the rapids ride at Legoland, Windsor on behalf of Dyer and Butler.

These projects come with increased time pressure as delivery is required to ensure opening in time for new seasons or in the case of a number of hotels constructed, in time for the London Olympics.

With this in mind, our customers often request that we assume principal contractor responsibility and carry out the construction of working platforms, guide walls, muck away and other piling attendances. This can help to reduce procurement times and aid contract management.

Public worksWe have successfully completed a large number of schools and colleges as part of the Building Schools for the Future programme. This includes continued business with Willmott Dixon and Kier, where Central Piling has provided value engineered alternatives to the original foundation schemes.

Information for CRB checking and operative accreditation is provided by our contracts management staff at an early stage to ensure the efficient commencement of works.

Other significant achievements in this sector include the construction of the Adult Mental Health unit in Southampton and William Harvey Hospital in Kent for Osborne.

CFA piling Construction technique & application

Continuous flight auger piles are constructed by injecting concrete through the hollow stem of the auger, with the spoil being extracted in one continuous movement as the auger is withdrawn. After the pile head is cleared of debris steel reinforcement is submerged into the high slump concrete.

CFA piling is a particularly economical choice of piled foundation in sands, gravels and low grade rock as this process requires no casings or drilling fluids.

Construction techniques/AS A COMPAnY, WE BELIEvE In BuILDInG LOnG TERM RELATIOnSHIPS WITH OuR CuSTOMERS. TO HELP ACHIEvE THIS WE POSSESS A vARIETY OF FOunDATIOn TECHnIQuES In ORDER THAT WE CAn FInD THE RIGHT PROCESS FOR EACH jOB.

Plant & equipment

We offer an expanding fleet of CFA rigs from 5T to 65T. Pile sizes range from 300mm to 900mm and up to 26m depth. To help us ensure pile integrity all rigs are fitted with computer monitoring systems which record pile dimensions, concrete pressures and volumes.

In addition to the piling rig, all machines will be supplied with concrete pumps and on larger sites concrete holding drums.

Where piles are used for deep basements it may be permissible to leave the concrete at a low level in order to reduce pile trimming.

Plant & equipment

We have a wide variety of hydraulic and crane mounted rotary rigs ranging from 2.5T to 65T. This provides pile sizes ranging from 250mm to 1800mm and up to 66m depth. The short mast height and small footprint of some of the rigs mean that most sites are accessible with our equipment.

Rotary piling Construction technique & application

Rotary rigs create the pile bore by removing the soil in sections, approximately a metre deep, until the design depth has been reached. At this stage full depth reinforcement cages, steel sections or permanent casings can be easily installed prior to the placement of concrete. Where piles are used for deep basements it may be permissible to leave the concrete at a low level in order to reduce pile trimming.

Rotary piling is generally used in dry stable soils and rocks. However in cohesionless soils, piles may still be formed with the use of casing or drilling fluid to support the bore.

Page 10: Central Piling

Central Piling can also supply you with a range of testing methods for materials and piles.

Driven piling Construction technique & application

Driven piles are installed by dropping a hammer weight on a pre-formed pile. When the pile moves a predetermined distance for a given hammer drop height, the pile capacity has been achieved.

Central Piling offer a bottom driven steel cased system with additional sections of casing being welded on as required. Reinforcement and concrete is then placed in the casing to provide a connection to the overlying structure. On selected contracts we can also provide pre-cast concrete piles.

Driven piling is particularly appropriate where soft and alluvial soils overlay dense sands and gravels.

Plant & equipment

To carry out driven piling we utilise 25T crane mounted crawler rigs, 55T hydraulic rigs and where access is restricted a 2.5T mini rig. If necessary machines can be supplied to pre-bore through the upper material.

Secant walls

Secant piles are installed by overlapping reinforced male piles and female piles which are installed with a low strength gain concrete. They are adopted to restrict groundwater and fines inflow with retained heights of up to 8m common. Greater excavation depths may be achieved. However the geological and hydrological conditions need to be considered along with installation tolerances when determining the suitability of the application.

Contiguous walls

Contrary to their name, contiguous piles are actually installed with a gap of 100-200mm per pile. This means that the wall is not water or fines tight. However where the conditions allow, such as in cohesive soils, it can be the most economic form of retaining wall.

The choice of construction technique, CFA or Rotary, is dependent upon soil type but can range from 300-1200mm diameter. This can provide retained heights of up to 15m with propping and 10m in a cantilever situation.

Retaining walls We offer a variety of bored pile retaining walls when provision for temporary and permanent support for basement excavations is required. We have the expertise and technology to ensure that ground movements are controlled and an economic solution is found.

The most common methods, secant and contiguous walls are discussed on this page. However further guidance and explanation of different techniques can be found in CIRIA guide C580.

Page 12: Central Piling

Geothermal pilingThe temperature differential between the ground and soil provides a means of heating or cooling buildings during the winter and summer months respectively. Due to the thermal conductivity of concrete the energy can be transferred through plastic pipe loops fixed to steel reinforcement cages within CFA, rotary or driven piles.

Central Piling has experience of working closely with consultants and clients to ensure a problem free integration of the geothermal pipework into the structure.

Grouting Central Piling offer permeation and infill grouting alongside piled solutions where solution features or man-made voids exist. A variety of machines can be used to install a relatively low strength mix to ensure the stability of the soil mass is achieved and that drilling of piles beyond the affected zone is possible.

AnchorsGround anchors and soil nails are commonly used to stabilise slopes and excavations, generally in conjunction with other geotechnical products.

using our restricted access equipment we can, for example, provide anchors to support retaining walls. This reduces the need for pile sizes, potentially increasing basement size and reducing costs. They are formed using high strength steel bars embedded to a predetermined depth with grout used to bond the anchor to the soil. Reduced wall settlements can be achieved by pre-stressing the anchor prior to the basement excavation.

Other products On selected contracts, in addition to the piling works, we offer a variety of other products. These include: piling platform installation and maintenance, ground beam and slab construction, aswell as spoil removal and pile trimming.

This can be supplemented by the provision of on-site engineering support and management, welfare units and toilet facilities.

Load testingLoad tests are used to either prove the maximum capacity of piles or verify predicted design values and settlement under pressure.

Where the ultimate load is to be determined the test should be conducted on a pile that is expendable to the main works. A working pile may be used as a test pile but the maximum test load should not generally exceed 1.5 x the safe working load.

Ancillary services/ In ADDITIOn TO THE COnSTRuCTIOn TECHnIQuES OFFERED, CEnTRAL PILInG CAn ALSO SuPPLY YOu WITH A RAnGE OF TESTInG METHODS FOR MATERIALS AnD PILES. THESE ARE CARRIED OuT BY InDEPEnDEnT COMPAnIES. HOWEvER, TO EASE THE PROCuREMEnT PROCESS, THEY ARE COORDInATED BY uS.

Where are they used?

Test piles are generally adopted where, for commercial reasons, a factor of safety of less than 3 using a British Standard (BS8004) design approach or 2 using a Eurocode (EC7) design approach has been adopted.

Where a factor of safety of 2.5 (BS8004) or 1.7 (EC7) is used working pile load tests are generally needed. Lower factors of safety will necessitate expendable pile load tests, however all approaches should be discussed and agreed with the relevant checking authorities.

Integrity testingIntegrity testing is carried out in order to identify anomalies in piles that could be of a structural importance.

How do they work?

There are a variety of testing procedures available including the ‘impulse response’ and ‘sonic echo’ methods. They work by sending a stress wave down the pile after it has been struck by an impact device. The reflection, when analysed in conjunction with the knowledge of the soil conditions and pile dimensions, provides information on the structural quality.

Methods of testing

Central Piling carry out two types of load tests: static load tests with a reaction beam and tension anchor piles, or alternatively dynamic load tests where a weight is dropped on to the pile head by crane.

Static load testing is suited to high pile loadings or single test piles. Whereas, dynamic testing is more appropriate for sites with multiple test piles, low pile loads or where the subsoil is not suitable for tension anchor piles.

Tests are carried out in accordance with the ICE SPERW unless advised otherwise.

Cube testingAt Central Piling we obtain all concrete supplies from quality approved suppliers who work in accordance with BS En 8500. Part of this code of practice requires them to carry out compliance testing on concrete cubes to verify strength. As such, there is not a requirement for us to carry out testing. However, we can upon the clients request arrange sampling and testing.

When are tests carried out?

When the concrete has reached two thirds of its design strength, or approximately seven days for most piling mixes, the pile may be trimmed. At this point, and prior to the placement of any reinforcement for the ground beams and pile caps, the piles may be tested. Please note that we require three working days notice to arrange the testing.

To ensure the stability of construction plant a working surface needs to be provided that will not settle excessively under the weight and working pressures of the equipment.

This generally takes the form of a compacted crushed granular material with, in some instances, geotextiles used provide to additional support.

Where sufficient attention is not paid to the design, installation or maintenance of a working platform, piling rigs may become unstable and accidents occur.

Guidance on these issues can be found in BRE Report BR470; however, we can carry out the design of the working platform together with the provision of a method statement and a supervisory visit. This is offered free of charge as part of any piling contract. If required we can also install and maintain the working platform for the duration of our works.
