‘Tis Autumn…Dear Friends,

CPFJ’s Fall Concert Series got o� to a fantastic start on September 16th with sax-ophone giant Jerry Weldon’s Organ Trio! Jerry’s warm, rich sound was enhanced by the amazing talents of Hammond B3 organist Keith Koehler, drummer Jason Brown, and guest vocalist, Denise King. �e audience very obviously enjoyed every minute of it!

�is year at the Dauphin County Jazz and Wine Festival on September 8th and 9th, CPFJ had a tent and table set up. We sipped a little wine, ate kettle corn and French fries, sold memberships and tickets to our Fall Concert Series, and handed out �yers, programs, newsletters and membership information. It was very well attended and provided a great opportunity to promote our organization at a new venue.

DON’T MISS IT!!! Our next concert on Sunday, October 14th will be held at the Allen �eater in Annville with jazz bassist legend Rufus Reid’s “Out Front’ Trio at 4pm. �e Trez Music Youth Band will start the a�ernoon o� at 3pm, and immediately following the “Out Front” Trio, there will be a lively jam session in MJ’s Co�eehouse!! MANY, many thanks to Bill and Beverly Lehr for their gen-erous contribution to this concert!

Sunday, November 11th, at the Ware Center in Lancaster, stellar jazz vocalist Jackie Ryan will perform the last of our Fall Concert Series. Put it on your calen-dars NOW, as an evening to look forward to!

Also many thanks to: Strawberry Square for providing a table to CPFJ in September at all four of their Tuesday noontime Jazz Month celebration concerts.

Skip Hicks of the Allen �eater for hosting CPFJ Jam Sessions every last Sunday of each month through April 2013.

Hilton Harrisburg, for hosting a jam session on the third �ursday of each month.

GREAT NEWS! Our Cultural Enrichment Fund membership has been renewed for another �ve years allowing us to continue to receive funding from them. We are grateful for all that CEF provides and value our relationship.

Jazz vocalist has been thrilling audiences across the globe

with her powerful 3 ½ octave range and her amazing stage presence. She has

a style that is uniquely her own. Born of a Mexican mother who sang in

Operettas in Mexico and an Irish father who sang classical tenor in many

languages, she was, as one critic put it, "simply born to sing." Jackie's

multicultural heritage and her natural affinity for singing in several languages

(she sings in English, Italian, French, Spanish and Portuguese) has added to

her increasing international acclaim. "Extraordinary is the word!" said jazz

critic Don Heckman - L. A. Times. Her style includes an amazing range from

gospel and blues to Brazilian Bossa Novas. From Latin to Bebop, from

Vocalese to the most heartfelt ballads. She is "one of the outstanding jazz

vocalists of her generation and, quite possibly, of all time. She is the

thoroughbred vocal equivalent of the Triple Crown, rivaling the dexterous

sass of Sarah Vaughan, the instinctive smarts of Carmen McRae and the

brings the return of one of the most beloved musicians to ever

grace the CPFJ stages - bassist . Born in Atlanta and raised

in Sacramento CA, Rufus Reid's major professional career began in

Chicago and continues since 1976 in New York City. His extensive jazz

background and discography reads literally like the Who's Who in jazz.

He has traveled, performed and recorded with many of the great Jazz

Masters. He was privileged to share many musical moments with some

that have passed on:

Equally known as an exceptional educator,

he began teaching clinics in 1971 with Jamey Aebersold's Summer

Jazz Workshops. Rufus was on the faculty of William Paterson

University in Wayne, New Jersey, as Full Professor and Director of the

Jazz Studies and Performance program for twenty years completing his

tenure in 1999. He has appeared for CPFJ with ,

The Out Front Trio consists of Rufus on bass, pianist and

drummer . Steve is an Indianapolis native who

played with Buddy Rich's Band at the age of 19 and is a renowned

composer/arranger for big band. His big band CD Downtown Blues was

nominated for a Grammy and his solo piano and trio recordings have all

been received with great acclaim. Drummer Duduka is originally from

Rio de Janerio's famed Ipanema section and grew up in the 1950's as the

Bossa Nova craze was taking shape. He left Brazil for New York in 1975

and helped revive the Brazilian jazz scene there. He has worked with many

Brazilian and jazz masters and appears on over 250 recordings. Duduka

led the innovative groups The New York Samba Band and Trio da Paz.

Rufus Reid is a long time member of CPFJ's Hall of Fame - please come

The Jazz Legend Award is cited for a lifetime of significantachievement and may have at one time or another performed before a CPFJ audience. The awardis made only from time to time as particular musicians achieve renown for their accomplishments.It is presented at a festival to which the recipient is invited to personally receive the LegendsAward.
