IN 1985 OPERA LOST...Conductor ALFREDO ANTONINI, Italian/American, 82 years old, inClearwater, Florida 11/3/83. For thirty years he conducted the CBSSymphony; he founded the Tampa Philharmonic and guest conducted manyregional operatic performances. He received an Emmy Award for thebest musical performance on television for his conducting of Laderman'sopera, And David Wept, in its premiere.

Composer and opera director GEORGES AURIC, French, 84 years old,in Paris 7/23/83. He and Germaine Tailleferre (see below) were the lastsurviving members of the famous French group of composers, Les Six.He wrote music for Diaghilev's Ballets Russes, and collaborated on manyfilms, especially those of Jean Cocteau. His other compositions includethe short operas Phkdre and Les Oiseaux. Between 1962 and 1968 hewas director of the Paris Opera, and was responsible for bringing con-temporary works to its stage. In 1954 he was elected President of theFrench Copyright Society, a post he held until his death. He publishedhis memoirs under the title "Quant j'etais la".

Choreographer and producer GEORGE BALANCHINE, Russian/American,79 years old, in New York 4/30/83. He was a world figure in thedevelopment of ballet in this century; his choreography of innumerableballets set international standards, and his modern ballets have becomeaccepted as classics. At 19 he created ballets in Russia, and at 21Diaghilev named him to succeed Bronislava Nijinska as choreographer ofthe Ballets Russes. He came to the United States in 1933, and, togetherwith Lincoln Kirstein, founded the American Ballet company and school.This later became the Ballet Society and finally evolved into the NewYork City Ballet. Throughout all those years Balanchine created im-portant ballets. He staged some operas, mainly in Germany, especially,of course, works that prominently featured ballet. His choreography forthe Metropolitan Opera included La Traviata, Carmen, Orfeo (1934-36)and Boris Godunov (1974), and he was the stage director for the Americanpremiere of The Rake's Progress at the Met in 1953. He was still activeas artistic director of the New York City Ballet Company until shortlybefore his death. He was married four times (Tamara Geva, Vera Zorina,Maria Tallchief, Tanaquil LeClercq); each ended in divorce.

Composer SAMUEL L.M. BARLOW, American, 90 years old, in Wyndmoor,Pennsylvania 9/19/83. Among his compositions were two operas: Amanda,which was never performed, and the one-act Mon Ami Pierrot, with alibretto by Sacha Guitry, which was premiered at the Opera Comique inParis in 1935 and which earned him the Legion d'Honneur. In the 1950's,he was President of the American Opera Society.

Operatic stage director KEN (KURT) C. BAUMANN, German/American,75 years old, in Ithaca, New York 2/12/83. He began his career as"Regieassistent" at the Staatsoper in Berlin, became stage director forthe Staedtische Oper there, and left for the United States in 1939. Helater joined the faculty of Cornell University, and in 1949 founded theIthaca Opera Association, one of the oldest of the grass-roots companiesand one which has performed annually since its inception. He was adedicated member of the Central Opera Service Professional Committee,was always interested in new developments, and was truly devoted tothe cause of opera.

Rome 3/6/83. She was best known for her championship of contemporarymusic - although her repertoire was by no means limited to this - andwas responsible for presenting many avant-garde vocal compositions intheir world premieres here and abroad. Her unusually large vocal rangeallowed her to perform works written for various voice categories. Forsixteen years she was married to composer Luciano Berio, from whomshe was divorced in 1966. She also taught at the Berkshire Music Festivaland wrote some vocal and instrumental compositions.

LADY NINA SCHELEMSKAYA BING, Russian/British, 86 years old, inNew York 12/21/83. She was married to Sir Rudolf Bing, who wasgeneral manager of the Metropolitan Opera from 1950 to 1972. Shestarted her own career as a member of a Russian ballet company, andwas married in 1928.

Baritone SIGURD BJOERLING, Swedish, 75 years old, in Helsingborg4/8/83. He began his career singing lyric Italian roles in Stockholm, butin the 1940's studied the Wagnerian repertory and specialized in thatFach. In 1950, he made his American debut in San Francisco, appearedin Bayreuth the following year, and in the 1952-53 season sang at theMetropolitan Opera; Telramund was his debut role. Guest appearancesin London, Vienna, Paris, and Milan followed; he remained a member ofthe Stockholm Opera until the middle 1970's. He was married to sopranoEdith Oldrup; he was not related to Jussi Bjbrling.

Composer and pianist EUBIE BLAKE, American, 100 years old, in Brook-lyn, New York 2/12/83. A ragtime composer, he brought the first blackmusical to Broadway in 1921 (Shuffle Along), and wrote many popularsongs which became classics. After several years in retirement, hereturned to public and performing life when he was in his mid-80's, andhis reappearance contributed to the major revival of ragtime. He wasawarded the Medal of Freedom when he was 98 years old, and made hislast professional appearance when he was 99.

Patron of the arts, KENYON C. BOLTON, American, 71 years old, inShaker Heights, Ohio 7/15/83. A philanthropist and supporter of numerouscivic and arts organizations, he served with the National Council on theArts, the Kennedy Center, and as vice president and member of theboard of the Metropolitan Opera Association. He was among the dedicatedfounding members of the Metropolitan Opera National Council, and alsoassumed the duties of vice president of its executive committee. Hisunabated interest and support of the Central Opera Service and itsactivities will always leave us indebted to him.

Conductor SIR ADRIAN CEDRIC BOULT, British, 93 years old, in London2/23/83. He joined the music staff of Covent Garden as an assistantin 1914, and made his conducting debut five years later with Parsifalat the Royal College of Music. Although primarily a symphonic conductor- he founded the BBC orchestra and led the London Philharmonic, theNew York Philharmonic, and the NBC Orchestra - he led some operaticperformances at Covent Garden and at Sadler's Wells in the 1930's,introducing British audiences to Wozzeck (1934) and Busoni's Doktor Faust(1937). He wrote an autobiography and two handbooks on conducting,and was the subject of a 1971 film, "The Point of the Stick". He wasknighted in 1937 and retired from public concerts in 1976; he continuedconducting classes at the Royal College of Music.

Soprano VINA BOVY, Belgian, 82 years old, in Ghent 5/16/83. Aftersinging leading roles in theatres in Belgium and France, she went toMilan to study with Toscanini and to sing in Italian opera houses. Atthat time, she also appeared at the Teatro Colon in Buenos Aires, andfrom 1936 to 1938 she was heard at the Metropolitan Opera in suchroles as Violetta, Manon, Lakme, Juliette, Marguerite, and the foursoprano parts in Les Contes d'Hoffmann. During that time she alsoappeared with the San Francisco Opera. Returning to Europe, she addedmany more roles to her repertory, and she continued to sing publiclyuntil 1955. In 1947, she was named director of the opera house inGhent, a post she held until 1956.

Music theatre producer HAZEL J. BRYANT, American, 44 years old, inNew York 11/7/83. During the past fifteen years she produced over 200musicals and dramatic plays, all with black casts. In 1968, she foundedthe Richard Allen Center of Culture and Art near Lincoln Center, andthree years later was co-founder of the Black Theater Alliance, a coalitionof black performance organizations. In 1977, she was founding directorof the National Arts Consortium. Her training was oriented towards asinging career (Peabody School of Music, Oberlin Conservatory, and theSalzburg Mozarteum), and in her early years she worked as a singer inEurope.

Bassoonist HUGO BURGHAUSER, Austrian/American, 86 years old, inNew York 12/9/82. He became first bassoonist of the Vienna Philharmonicin 1919, and was elected president of the autonomous orchestra in 1933.During his five years in that position he was instrumental in bringingArturo Toscanini to Vienna, and for inviting back such luminaries asBruno Walter, Wilhelm Furtwangler, and Otto Klemperer. He befriendedother famous musicians, and Richard Strauss dedicated a composition tohim. He came to the United States in 1941 and joined the MetropolitanOpera orchestra, where he remained for some thirty years. He publishedhis memoirs three years ago, in German.

Conductor FERRUCIO CALUSIO, Argentinean, 93 years old, in BuenosAires 6/3/83. He began his career in the 1920's as an assistant toToscanini at La Scala, where he conducted various operas in 1930. In1927, he started leading performances at his home theatre, Teatro Col6nin Buenos Aires, where he remained until 1960. He was engaged asguest conductor by many companies, and during the 1940-41 season heled Caxalleria rusticana, Pagliacci, and II Trovatore at the MetropolitanOpera.

Soprano ANNA CASE, American, 95 years old, in New York 1/7/84. Shewas a leading soprano at the Metropolitan Opera, where she performedfor eleven years. She made her debut there in 1909 as one of the pagesin Lohengrin, but soon sang major roles; in 1913 she sang Sophie in theAmerican premiere of Der Rosenkavalier at the Met, and earlier thesame year appeared there as Feodor in the American premiere of BorisGodunov, conducted by Toscanini and sung in Italian. She was the firstAmerican singer to reach the Met stage without prior European trainingor European performances. She left the company in 1920, but continuedto sing in concerts. She retired in 1931 when she married ClarenceMackay, music patron and board chairman of Postal Telegraph and Cable.In 1966, she rejoined many of her former Metropolitan Opera colleagueson the Met stage for the presentation of honored guests at the Farewell

Mezzo-soprano BRUNA CASTAGNA, Italian, 77 years old, in Pinamar,Argentina 7/10/83. An internationally famous singer, she made her debutin Italy in 1925, sang the major mezzo roles of the Italian, French, andGerman repertory for several seasons at La Scala, and appeared in someof the same roles in Buenos Aires. Her first performance at theMetropolitan Opera was as Amneris in 1936, and she remained a faithfuland revered member of the company until 1945, by which time she hadsung eleven roles there. Other major American cities in which sheperformed were Chicago, San Francisco, and Philadelphia, which hostedher farewell performances as Carmen in 1950. Her sister, mezzo-sopranoMaria Castagna-Falliani, died in 1982 (see Vol. 24, No. 2).

Mezzo-soprano EDITH COATES, British, 74 years old, in Worthing, England1/7/83. She started singing professionally in 1924 with the Vic-WellsOpera, the forerunner of the Sadler's Wells company which was foundedin 1931, and where she sang leading roles until 1946. In 1937, she madeher debut at the Royal Opera Covent Garden, and in 1947 became afounding member of the newly-organized Royal Opera at Covent Gardenwhen it gave its first full productions after World War II. She createdseveral roles, including two in the Britten operas Peter Grimes andGloriana, and had a repertory of some sixty parts. In 1977, she wasawarded the Order of the British Empire for her services to music.

Composer and conductor LAWRANCE A. COLLINGWOOD, British, 95years old, in Perthshire, England 12/19/82. He wrote two operas: Macbeth,which was premiered in London in 1927 in concert and in 1934 in astaged production, and The Death of Tintagiles, presented in concert atSadler's Wells in 1950. As a conductor, he brought many foreign operasto the British stage for the first time. He was a regular conductor forthe Vic-Wells Opera Company in the 30's, and was named music directorof the Sadler's Wells Opera in 1941. He was made a Commander of theBritish Empire in 1948.

Arts administrator and publisher RICHARD H. DANA, American, 71 yearsold, in New York 1/6/84. From 1966 to 1973 he was president of theDiller-Quaile School of Music, which he rescued from closing and re-established as a vital music school in New York. For ten years, beginningin 1939, he operated a music publishing house, and as such was theoriginal publisher of Virgil Thomson's Four Saints in Three Acts and TheMother of Us All. From 1955 to 1969, he was assistant to DavidRockefeller, particularly in the areas of philanthropic and artistic commit-ments. Later, he was assistant to the president of Rockefeller University.He served on the board of the Contemporary Music Society, among otherorganizations, and was an executive with various leading book publishers.

Lyricist and translator HOWARD DIETZ, American, 86 years old, in NewYork 7/30/83. He was among the most successful lyricists, collaboratingwith such composers as George Gershwin, Jerome Kern, Richard Rodgers,Vernon Duke, and Arthur Schwarz. In 1940, he became a vice presidentof Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer after having been the company's director ofpublicity and advertising for some twenty years. He was also a directorof ASCAP, and wrote an autobiography, "Dancing in the Dark". In theearly 50's, Rudolf Bing commissioned him to write English translationsof and texts for La Boheme and Die Fledermaus. He collaborated with

Composer WERNER EGK, German, 82 years old, in Inning, West Germany7/10/83. The renowned composer was particularly famous for his operaticcompositions, which total eleven works. Several of them have beenperformed in the United States. Der Revisor (after Gogol) was presentedby the New York City Opera as The Inspector General in 1960, PeerGynt (after Ibsen) was first heard here at the Hartt College of Musicin 1966, Verlobung in San Domingo (after Kleist) was given its Americanpremiere in 1974, when the St. Paul Opera presented it as Engagementin San Domingo, and Siebzehn Tage und Vier Minuten (after Calderon)reached the U.S. courtesy of the Minnesota Opera in 1970. His firstfull-length stage work, Die Zaubergeige, had its premiere in Frankfurtin 1935. He served as head of the German Union of Composers duringthe Hitler era (1941-45); in 1947 he went through a de-Nazification trial.In 1968 he was named president of the German Music Council.

Lyricist IRA GERSHWIN, American, 86 years old, in Beverly Hills 8/17/83.The brother of George Gershwin, he collaborated with the composer inthe creation of Porgy and Bess, Funny Face, Strike Up the Band, andOf Thee I Sing (which brought the team a Pulitzer Prize). Hundreds ofGershwin songs, and other musicals such as Lady be Good, Oh, Kay!,and Girl Crazy attest to the successful, compatible creativity of thetwo men, as do a number of film scores. Ira Gershwin later collaboratedwith Kurt Weill (Lady in the Dark), Harold Arlen (A Star is Born), andJerome Kern (Cover Girl). The recent musical, My One and Only, is arevival of George and Ira Gershwin songs, with minor changes approvedby Ira. A collection of his lyrics was published in 1959 under the title"Lyrics on Several Occasions", and was reissued in 1973.

Composer ALBERTO GINASTERA, Argentinean, 67 years old, in Geneva6/26/83. He was among the leading contemporary composers, althoughhe only made his mark in the late 60's, relatively late in his career. Inaddition to many major orchestral and chamber music compositions, hewrote a total of four operas: Aeroporto, Don Rodrigo (American premiereby the New York City Opera in 1966), Bomarzo (world premiere by theOpera Society of Washington, DC, in 1967), and Beatrix Cenci (commis-sioned and premiered by the then Washington Opera Society for theopening of Kennedy Center in 1971).

Composer and conductor JAKOV GOTOVAC, Yugoslavian, 87 years old,in Zagreb 10/16/82. He conducted at the Zagreb Opera between 1923and 1957. Of his operatic compositions, the work best known is Ero,the Joker, first heard in Zagreb in 1935, but not yet performed in theUnited States. It is still produced quite frequently, especially in Germanopera houses. Other titles include Morana, Kamenik, Mila Gojsalika,Stanac, and Dalmaro.

His Metropolitan Operadebut occurred in 1964, when he sang Truffaldino in Ariadne auf Naxos.Among the many roles he performed - always in a most accomplishedmanner of the highest artistic standards - were Mozart's Leporello,Figaro, Count Almaviva, Don Alfonso, Osmin, and Papageno, Puccini'sGianni Schicchi and Scarpia, Verdi's Falstaff and King Philip II, Donizetti'sDon Pasquale and Sulpice, Rossini's Dr. Bartolo and Dandini, Berg's Doktor(Wozzeck) and Dr. Schon, Schbnberg's Moses, Richard Strauss's BaronOchs and Count Waldner, Johann Strauss's Orlovsky, Beethoven's Rocco,Wagner's Pogner and Daland, Mussorgsky's Varlaam and Pimen, Massenet'sSancho Panza and Lescaut, Debussy's Golaud, and Britten's CaptainBalstrode and Owen Wingrave. His musicianship was matched by aninnate sense of the dramatic, and his artistic curiosity and integritywere reflected in the high performance standards he set for himself.His flawless diction, in any language, was unique, and his Lieder recitalsbecame celebrated artistic events and models for young artists to follow.Fortunately, some of them are preserved on videotape, and are periodi-cally broadcast over PBS. In addition to his regular appearances withthe Metropolitan Opera and the New York City Opera, he was frequentlyheard with the Opera Company of Boston, where he had just completedseveral performances of Norma in May, with the San Francisco Opera,where he was expected in early June, and at Santa Fe and in Europeat the Glyndebourne and Spoleto festivals and as Nick Shadow at theRoyal Opera Covent Garden. In 1981, he directed his first opera, TheMarriage of Figaro, at the Wolf Trap Festival. He gave master classesat Yale and Princeton universities and at the Marines College of Music,and was also an accomplished pianist. He was respected and loved forhis unselfish, cheerful generosity, and will be greatly missed by hiscolleagues as much as by his friends and his audiences.

Stage director and administrator PAUL HAGER, German, 58 years old,in Dortmund 4/12/83. He received his training as assistant to WielandWagner in Bayreuth in the early 50's, and later directed opera productionsat various German opera houses. Annually for some fifteen years until1973, he was active at the San Francisco Opera as chief stage director,and was also a guest in Vienna, Salzburg, Milan, and other internationaltheatres. In 1974, he was appointed Generalintendant in Dortmund, wherehe was directing a new production at the time of his death.

Arts administrator NANCY HANKS, American, 55 years old, in NewYork 1/7/83. None of the tributes paid her while she was leading thecause for national recognition of the arts in the United States, nor anyof the eloquent tributes paid her on the occasion of her untimely passing,would have pleased her as much as would the knowledge of the abundanceof fruit which her work bore. As Chairman of the National Endowmentfor the Arts and of the National Council on the Arts under the administra-tions of three Presidents of the United States, she held the highestgovernmental office in the arts from 1969 to 1977. Her dedication andperseverance, her gentle persuasion and undaunted determination earnedher the respect of government officials as well as that of the artisticcommunity, and it is greatly to her credit that the arts have achievedthe official recognition, the realization, of their importance to thedevelopment and well-being of our country and its people. Under MissHanks' administration, the NEA's budget grew from $16 million to $100million, and the arts agency's impact was so profound that its future

Prior to her position with the arts agency, she wasassociated with Nelson Rockefeller and the Rockefeller Brothers Fund,working specifically on projects involving the performing arts. Afterher resignation from the NEA, she held various prestigious positions, andwas honored by the Endowment which bestowed on her its first FoundersAward for Civic Leadership. President Reagan appointed her to hisCommittee on Arts and Humanities. She had been instrumental in savingthe historic Old Post Office Building, which was declared a NationalLandmark and renovated, with one part readied for new NEA offices.This wing has been named the Nancy Hanks Center by official Congres-sional decree.

Lighting designer and production manager GILBERT V. HEMSLEY, Ameri-can, 47 years old, in New York 9/4/83. He became lighting designerfor the New York City Opera in 1978, where he lit thirty-five operas;in 1981, he was named production supervisor. He received his trainingat the Yale Drama School, and worked at Princeton University and laterunder the guidance of the renowned Jean Rosenthal. He was called uponto light new productions for the opening of the Kennedy Center (Bern-stein's Mass), for the Metropolitan Opera, many of the major balletcompanies, and several Broadway shows. He also designed the lightingfor Porgy and Bess at Radio City Music Hall, and Glass's Einstein onthe Beach at the Metropolitan Opera House. He was professor of theatrelighting and production management at the University of Wisconsin.

Tenor WILLIAM HORNE, American, 69 years old, in New York 4/19/83.A winner of the Naumburg Award, he joined the roster of the New YorkCity Opera in 1944 and remained with the company until 1948. In 1946,he sang the title role of Peter Grimes in the American premiere of theBritten opera when it was conducted by Leonard Bernstein at Tanglewood.He also participated in the world premiere of Virgil Thomson's TheMother of Us All in May, 1947, at Columbia University's Brander MatthewsHall. Other appearances included some at the Edinburgh FestivaL

Administrator and stage director WOLFRAM HUMPERDINCK, German,90 years old, in Detmold 4/29/83. He was the son of composer EngelbertHumperdinck and was active as a stage director in cities in Germanyas well as in countries abroad, including the United States and Japan.From 1945 to 1952 he was general administrator at the opera in Kiel.In 1965, he published a biography of his father.

Costume designer BARBARA KARINSKA, Russian/American, 97 yearsold, in New York 10/18/83. Affiliated as costume designer with theNew York City Ballet since its founding, she worked closely with thelate George Balanchine. In 1948, she won an Academy Award for herdesigns for the film, Joan of Arc; she was also responsible for numerouscostumes for Broadway shows and for the Metropolitan Opera. Her lastdesigns for the City Ballet were done in 1977 (Jewels and Vienna Walzes),at which time she retired due to illness; her costume shop was takenover by the ballet company.

Administrator ROBERT P. KELLIGAR, American, 55 years old, in Chicago12/4/83. He was administrative director of the Chicago Opera Theaterfor the last four years. His earlier experiences in arts administrationincluded being general manager of the Oakland Symphony in California1960-71, and filling the same position with the Omaha Symphony for the

Conductor JAROSLAV KROMBHOLC, Czech, 65 years old, in Prague7/16/83. He made his debut at the National Theatre in Prague in 1940,and remained there for four years. After one year as music directorin Ostrava, he was offered, and accepted, the same position at thePrague National Theatre, where he also became a member of theadministration. He made many guest appearances with major internationalopera companies, both in the East and the West, including Switzerland,England, Italy, Spain, and Austria. He also led symphony concerts; hislast position was as head of the Czech radio orchestra.

Tenor CHARLES KULLMAN, American, 80 years old, in New Haven,Connecticut 2/8/83. The internationally famous tenor began his careerin Berlin, singing Pinkerton under Otto Klemperer at the Kroll Oper in1931. Leaving Germany after two years because of his anti-Nazi feelings,he became a regular member of the Vienna State Opera, and sang there,with the Philharmonic, and at the Salzburg Festival under such leadingconductors as Bruno Walter and Arturo Toscanini. His MetropolitanOpera debut in 1935 was as Gounod's Faust, and from then on heperformed with the company until his retirement in 1960. His repertorycovered thirty-three roles, and he appeared in 402 performances in NewYork and on tour. He also sang with most other major Americancompanies, such as San Francisco, Chicago, and Cincinnati, during thoseyears. In 1956, he began teaching at Indiana University in Bloomington,and four years later he became a full-time, permanent faculty member.He occasionally performed there, specifically as Parsifal.

Soprano ANNA LESKAYA-ASCH, Russian/American, 87 years old, in NewYork 5/9/83. Her first operatic performances occurred in her nativeKiev, and she later performed leading dramatic roles with various com-panies in Europe and in the United States, where she established residencyin 1927. In February, 1935, she sang the title role in the Americanpremiere of Shostakovich's Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk with the ClevelandOrchestra under Artur Rodzinski, both in Cleveland and in New York atthe Metropolitan Opera House. Appearances in Chicago and at theHollywood Bowl followed; in the 1940's, she retired from the stage toteach.

Conductor and musicologist SIR ANTHONY LEWIS, British, 68 years old,in Haslemere, England 6/6/83. His interest in and staging of little-performed works by Rameau, Lully, Handel, and Purcell was most helpfulin reviving a national and international interest in these early Baroqueoperas. In 1946, he founded the BBC classical-music radio network. In1947, he joined the music faculty of Birmingham University, and from1968 to 1982 he was principal of the Royal College of Music in London.In 1972, he was knighted. He edited over twenty volumes of "MusicaBritannica".

Musicologist, author, and critic IRVING LOWENS, American, 67 yearsold, in Baltimore 11/14/83. He was music critic of The Washington Starfrom 1953 to 1978, and was a founding member of the Music CriticsAssociation, which he served as president for four years beginning in1971. Hewas a research fellow and visiting professor at the Institute of AmericanMusic at Brooklyn College, and from 1978 to 1981 was dean and associatedirector of the Peabody Conservatory of Music at Johns Hopkins Univer-sity in Baltimore. In the 1950's, he was a research consultant for theMoravian Music Foundation, where he was named a trustee and fromwhich he received the Doramus Award. At one time he was also affiliatedwith the Music Division of the Library of Congress.

Conductor and composer IGOR MARKEVITCH, Russian/French, 70 yearsold, in Antibes, France 3/7/83. Internationally known as a conductor,he began his career as a child prodigy composer. After studies withNadia Boulanger, among others, he was commissioned by Diaghilev towrite a piano concerto which was produced with marked success. Healso composed a Cantate with text by Cocteau, ballet music, and choralworks. However, it was his conducting career that eventually made himfamous. He was music director of the orchestras in Stockholm, Montreal,Havana, Paris, Madrid, Monte Carlo, Mexico, and of the Santa Ceciliain Rome, and made guest appearances in many other major cities. Hisfirst marriage was to Nijinsky's daughter, Kira; this ended in divorce.

Composer, educator, and administrator PETER MENNIN, American, 60years old, in New York 6/17/83. After eleven years as a faculty memberof the Juilliard School, he was appointed director of Baltimore's PeabodyConservatory; five years later, in 1963, he returned to the nation's leadingmusic school as its president. During his administration, Juilliard estab-lished the Theatre Center in 1968, moved from Claremont Avenue toLincoln Center in 1969, concentrating its attention on its advancedstudents, and began the prestigious American Opera Center in 1970.Although, after the first few years, the original concept of paying itsyoung apprentice singers was abandoned for financial reasons, the Centercontinues to present students who, in most cases, have completed theirbasic school or conservatory training and who are ready for and oftenwell on their way to professional careers. Also under Dr. Mennin, theschool developed its Contemporary Music Festival, four of which havebeen presented in successive years. As president, he not only addedprestigious and knowledgeable artists to the school's faculty, but alsocreated the special advanced conductors' training program, which producedsuch American talent as James Levine, Leonard Slatkin, James Conlon,and Dennis Russell Davies. As a composer, he created nine symphonies,and numerous concerti, works for chorus, and chamber music pieces,many of which were written on commission. The New York Philharmonic,in particular, has performed thirty-two of Mr. Mennin's works, two inworld premieres.

Conductor RAINER MIEDEL, German/American, 45 years old, in Seattle3/25/83. He completed his studies as a cellist in West Germany, andaccepted his first position as a member of the Stockholm Philharmonicin 1965. After four years he was named assistant to the orchestra'smusic director, Antal Dorati. He assumed the music directorship of theSeattle Symphony Orchestra in 1976, with interim stops at the BaltimoreSymphony and the Florida Philharmonic. Guest engagements took himto many of the world's leading orchestras both here and abroad, and alsoto the Stockholm Royal Opera.

Although his compositions include some symphonic works, he made hisname by writing scores for musicals, and some ballets and films. TheBroadway show The Golden Apple was successful in 1954, and Gentlemen,Be Seated in 1963, the latter premiered by the New York City Opera.His last completed work was a one-act opera, Sorry, Wrong Number,which was given a first reading by the Lake George Opera's ContemporaryAmerican Opera Studio in 1980, and premiered by the After Dinner Operain 1982.

Bass TANCREDI PASERO, Italian, 90 years old, in Milan 2/17/83. Hewas among the busiest and most versatile of the Italian singers. Afterfive seasons in smaller Italian opera houses, he became the leading bassin Rome in 1923. Three years later, he opened the season at La Scala,Milan, as King Philip (Don Carlo) under Toscanini. He sang there regularlyuntil 1951, acquiring a repertoire of fifty-six roles and appearing in 465performances in Milan alone. He sang in most major European operahouses, and at the Teatro Colon, and was a member of the MetropolitanOpera from 1929 to 1933 where he was heard in some eighteen roles inabout 100 performances. He seemed equally at home in the grand Italianoperas as he was in the French, Russian (Boris), and German ones (Caspar,and more especially Wagner - Wotan, Hagen, Gurnemanz), and in Mozartroles (Sarastro and Leporello). He also created leading bass roles inoperas by Giordano, Mascagni, Pizzetti, and Ghedini.

Designer ROBERT PREVOST, Canadian, 55 years old, in Montreal 7/5/82.He began his career with Les Compagnons de St-Laurent, and designedsome seventy-five productions for the Theatre du Nouveau Monde andthe Theatre du Rideau Vert. Among his operatic designs were thoseexecuted for L'Opera de Montreal and for the National Arts Centre inOttawa, including Don Giovanni, Otello, Cavalleria rusticana, and Pa-gliacci. In all cases he was responsible for the set, costume, and lightingdesigns. He also designed a number of productions for the Royal WinnipegBallet, the National Ballet of Canada, and for Les Grands BalletsCanadiens. He taught at the National Theatre School of Canada.

Author and publicist LANFRANCO RASPONI, Italian, 69 years old, inRio de Janeiro 4/9/83. A descendant of an old, aristocratic family,Count Rasponi specialized in writing about society and the performingarts. His last book, published in 1982, was "The Last of the PrimaDonnas", a collection of his memoirs as they related to famous operasingers. Among those he represented as a public relations agent wereLicia Albanese, Zinka Milanov, Renata Tebaldi, Franco Corelli, MarioDel Monaco, and Cesare Siepi.

Conductor NINO SANZOGNO, Italian, 72 years old, in Milan 5/4/83.Between 1938 and 1940 he was principal conductor at La Fenice inVenice, and for the following thirty years he appeared regularly at LaScala, Milan. His guest engagements took him to many internationalopera houses in major cities, including San Francisco and Chicago, but,contrary to some reports, he did not conduct at the Metropolitan Opera.While he had a wide repertory, his special interest lay in music of the20th century, and, in addition to many familiar contemporary operas, heconducted world premieres of operas by Chailly, Bartolozzi, and Malipiero.

He also gave master classes in Dresden, Berlin, andSalzburg.

Artists manager and record producer NAT SHAPIRO, American, 61 yearsold, in New York 12/15/83. He represented a diverse list of performers- popular and "semi-classical" singers, composers, and instrumentalists.He produced over 100 record albums, and was production coordinator ofsuch shows as Hair and Jacques Brel is Alive and Well and Living inParis. He was director of international recording and music publishingactivities at CBS Records, and editor of "Down Beat", a music magazine.He wrote two books on jazz, a six-volume series "Popular Music", andan "Encyclopedia of Quotations About Music". He was a trustee andgovernor of the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences.

Actor WALTER SLEZAK, Austrian/American, 80 years old, in Long Island,New York 4/22/83. Son of the world famous tenor, Leo, he began hisacting career in German theatres while in his twenties. In 1930, heperformed in his first Broadway musical, which led to May Wine, Musicin the Air, and / Married an Angel. Hollywood and Broadway kept himbusy, and among the successful plays was Fanny, in which he shared thelimelight with Ezio Pinza. In 1959, he was invited by Rudolf Bing toappear at the Metropolitan Opera in a new production of The GyspyBaron as Szupan, the peasant, which he performed with a live pig underhis arm.

Radio producer GERALDINE SOUVAINE DAVIDSON, American, 74 yearsold, in New York 7/4/83. In 1940, when Texaco became the sponsor ofthe Metropolitan Opera Saturday matinee broadcasts, she and her husband,Henry Souvaine, began producing the intermission features. She continuedas producer after her husband's death in 1955, and retired in 1981 aftermore than forty years. It was under her direction that such successfulformats as the Opera Quiz, Opera News on the Air, and Biographies inMusic were developed. Her first association with radio broadcastingoccurred in the 1930's, when she was affiliated with the General Motorsconcerts broadcast from Carnegie Hall.

Composer GERMAINE TAILLEFERRE, French, 91 years old, in Paris11/7/83. She was the last surviving member of the group of Frenchcomposers known as Les Six (see also George Auric above). Hercompositions included full orchestral works, but more frequently shewrote concert!, chamber music pieces, and works for solo instruments.Her output includes several ballets, some vocal music, and one opera, IIetait un petit navir, which was premiered in Paris in 1951.

Soprano MARION TALLEY, American, 75 years old, in Southern California1/3/83. She made her Metropolitan Opera debut as Gilda at the age ofnineteen, and sang with the company from 1926 to 1930. She createdthe role of Le Rossignol in the American premiere of the Stravinskywork, and was also featured as the Queen of the Night and the Queenof Shemakha. She appeared in some early sound films, and gave recitals,too. In 1942, she retired from making public appearances.

Composer FEDERICO MORENO TORROBA, Spanish, 91 years old, inMadrid 9/12/82. He was a major creator of zarzuelas, among them LaChidapona and, the most famous, Luisa Fernanda, which was premieredat the Teatro Colon in 1976. He also wrote an opera, El Poeta, forPlacido Domingo in 1981.

Stage director and producer SHEPARD TRAUBE, American, 76 years old,in New York 7/23/83. He was a theatrical producer and Broadway stagedirector for over forty years. He co-founded the Society of StageDirectors and Choreographers in 1959, and was elected its first president.He was appointed managing director of Equity Library Theatre in 1956,and was a lecturer on theatre craft at Yale University, New YorkUniversity, City College of New York, and Carnegie-Mellon University.

Bass-baritone PETER VAN DER BILT, Dutch, 47 years old, in Amsterdam9/25/83. He was discovered in 1964 by conductor Grischa Barfuss, whoengaged him as a member of the Deutsche Oper am Rhein in Dusseldorf.He remained a member of that company, singing many major roles ofhis Fach there. A strong acting talent made it possible for him tobecome so versatile that he portrayed both the highly dramatic as wellas the lighter roles, and he was also cast successfully in musical comedy.Guest appearances took him to Vienna, Salzburg, London, Brussels, Munich,Hamburg, Moscow, and Tokyo, and, of course, he was a regular memberof the ensemble at the Holland Festival.

Conductor ALFRED WALLENSTEIN, American, 84 years old, in NewYork 2/8/83. He started his career as a cellist, and occupied the firstchair at the New York Philharmonic during Toscanini's seven years asmusic director. His conducting activities began with radio orchestras,in 1933 over WOR, later with the NBC Symphony, and the orchestra ofNBC's "The Voice of Firestone". In his ten years as music director ofWOR (1935-45), he brought the classical radio programs to an unprece-dentedly high artistic level (in 1940 he performed seven Mozart operasover the air), and in 1942 he received the Peabody Award for "pio-neering...for good music, and encouraging and originating various uniquebroadcasts". He was a champion of the American composer, and oftenperformed contemporary works. He was music director of the LosAngeles Philharmonic from 1943 to 1956, and of the Caramoor Festivalfrom 1958 to 1961. During the 60's, he conducted major orchestras hereand abroad. In 1968, he was invited to join the faculty of the JuilliardSchool, and he gave his last New York concert with the school's orchestraat Tully HalL

Composer SIR WILLIAM WALTON, British, 80 years old, in Ischia 3/8/83.His 1931 oratorio, Belshazzar's Feast, was his first big success, andestablished him as a composer of international repute. Many pieces fororchestra and for solo instruments followed, as did some important filmscores. Finally, in 1954, his first opera, Troilus and Cressida, waspremiered at Covent Garden, and the San Francisco Opera offered thefirst American performance a year later. When the New York CityOpera staged it in 1956, it received the New York Music Critics' CircleAward. It was also performed at La Scala. His one act, The Bear,based on Chekov and first heard in Aldeburgh in 1967, appears quitefrequently on American operatic and workshop stages. His last composi-tion, the ballet Varii Capricci, was given its world premiere by the RoyalBallet when the London company was in New York last April.

Bass-baritone DAVID WARD, Scottish, 61 years old, in Dunedin, NewZealand 7/16/83. From 1953 to 1959 he sang major bass roles with theSadler's Wells Opera, where he had made his debut in 1952. He joinedthe Royal Opera in 1958 with a debut performance of Pogner, remainedas a permanent member until 1964, and continued to sing there as aguest until his retirement in 1978. He contributed musical articles and music reviews,especially opera critiques, to Opera News, Opera, and other musical andnon-musical periodicals. His knowledgeable and often amusing books areby no means limited to musical subjects. They include several excellentcookbooks (particularly on Viennese specialities), and a number of bookson the cities of his youth, Ostrava, Prague, and Vienna. In his inimitablestyle, he often contributed to The New York Times Magazine and thetravel section of the same paper.

Philanthropist and opera patron VIVIAN O'GARA WEYERHAEUSER (Mrs.Frederick), American, in St. Paul 6/6/83. An active and faithful supporterof the Metropolitan Opera, she was among the founding members of theMetropolitan Opera National Council, and was elected its vice chairmanin 1953 and was chairman of its executive committee 1955-57. At thesame time, she was elected to the Metropolitan Opera's board of directors.In 1957, she became the Council's president, and served in that officeuntil 1961, when she was named honorary president. She organized theUpper Midwest Region for the Council's audition program, which sheheaded for a long time. The first prize of that competition was formany years given as the Mrs. Frederick K. Weyerhaeuser Award.

Playwright TENNESSEE WILLIAMS, American, 71 years old, in New York2/25/83. This world famous, innovative writer, whose plays influencedthe international theater dramatically, inspired many composers whowished to set his plays to music. Only one was permitted to do so: LeeHoiby, who chose the drama Summer and Smoke.

Musicologist, author, and museum curator EMANUEL WINTERNITZ, Aus-trian/American, 85 years old, in New York 8/22/83. He first joined theMetropolitan Museum as a lecturer, was subsequently put in charge ofthe Crosby Brown Collection of Musical Instruments of All Nations, andin 1949 was named curator when the Musical Instrument Collectionbecame an official Museum department. Under his guidance, the oldand rare instruments were successively restored to playing condition. Inresponding to his request for space, so that the instruments might bebetter displayed and also played to prevent them from deteriorating, theMetropolitan Museum built the Andre Mertens Galleries for MusicalInstruments, which opened in 1971. Winternitz became curator emeritustwo years later. He taught at Yale and at the City University of NewYork, arranged concert series of Baroque and Renaissance music withauthentic instruments, and published seven books, including the two-

Tenor PETER BAXEVANOS (ne Thessalonika), Greek, 74 years old, inVienna 6/24/82. Following his debut at the Vienna Volksoper in 1934 inWolf-Ferrari's Sly, he became a member of the Zurich Opera ensemble,where he sang the first Aiwa (Berg's Lulu, 1937) and the first CardinalAlbrecht (Hindemith's Mathis der Maler, 1938). After the war, heperformed at the Vienna Staatsoper and sang as a guest in Italy andGreece in major roles of the Italian and German repertoire.

Healso sang in Germany and France, and appeared in New York in 1946-47with the Salmaggi Opera. Performances in Cape Town led to a teachingengagement at the local conservatory.

Baritone CASPAR BROECHELER, Dutch, 72 years old, in Bremen 4/25/82.He sang in Bremen before World War II, returned to the company in1946, and remained a member of the ensemble until 1969. His rolesthere and in other German theaters included Hans Sachs, Wotan, andCaspar.

EVANGELIA CALLAS (KALOGEROPOULOS), Greek, 84 years old, inAthens 8/20/82. She was the mother of Maria Callas and is survivedby Maria's older sister, Jacki.

General manager (sovrintendente) CARLO ALBERTO CAPPELLI, Italian,75 years old, in Verona 8/3/82. After heading the Teatro Comunale inBologna, he was appointed general manager of the Arena di Verona in1971, a post he held until his death. During his administration, attendanceat the Arena tripled.

Soprano MINA CRAVI-BOZZA, Italian/American, 61 years old, in NewYork 2/10/83. She sang many leading roles with the San Carlo Operain New York and on tour during the 40's and 50's, while her husband,Fausto Bozza, managed the company. She later taught, and founded theGuild Rehearsal Studios.

Tenor TINO FOLGAR, Spanish, 91 years old, in Buenos Aires 1/83. Hebegan his career in Italy, and in 1925-26 he performed with the ItalianOpera in Holland. He appeared in vaudeville shows and zarzuelas in the1930's, and in 1945 he moved to Buenos Aires, remaining there to teach.

Conductor PHILIP FRADKIN, American, 61 years old, in New York5/20/83. He was conductor of the current Broadway hit, 42nd Street;he had functioned as musical director for Gypsy and Timbuktu.

Bass TUGOMIR FRANC, Yugoslavian, 48 years old, in Vienna 1/83. Hewas a member of the Vienna Staatsoper for twenty years, having beenengaged by Karajan in 1962. His repertoire was large, and includedGerman (Mozart and Wagner), Italian, French, and English operas. Hemade guest appearances in many leading opera houses in most Europeancountries, and also sang at the Salzburg and Bayreuth festivals.

Baritone HEINZ FRIEDRICH, German, 61 years old, in Munich 1/83. Forthe last twenty years he had been a member of the Theater amGartnerplatz ensemble, and had been scheduled to sing the leading rolein the premiere of Antoniou's Periander in February.

Soprano ERZSEBET HAZY, Hungarian, 51 years old, in Budapest 11/24/82.She made her debut with the Budapest State Opera in the early 50's,and sang leading roles there. She also made guest appearances in Vienna,and performed in several films.

Acoustical engineer ARTHUR C. KELLER, American, 82 years old, inBronxville, New York 8/25/83. He was a sound engineer with BellLaboratories in the late 20's, and among his inventions was a new stylusfor the phonograph record, which made high-fidelity recordings possible.It later developed into single-groove stereo records. One of his earlysupporters was Leopold Stokowski, whose concerts he recorded at theAcademy of Music beginning in 1930.

Educator JOHN McFADDEN, American, in Waco, Texas 10/26/82. Hewas professor of voice and director of the opera theatre at BaylorUniversity for ten years. A memorial scholarship in his name wasestablished at the University.

Singer, dancer, and teacher VIRGINIA MAURET, American, in her lateseventies, in New York 1/16/83. She began her performing career invaudeville, where she danced, sang, and played the violin. Later, sheturned to teaching and producing opera with young singers, founding theYoung Artists Opera Company in New York. Among the musicians whoplayed and conducted for her were Eve Queler, Joan Dorneman, JaschaZayde, and Abba Bogin.

Soprano RUTH MILLER (CHAMLEE), American, 90 years old, in LosAngeles 6/28/83. She made her debut in Europe under the name FrancescaMilena, then returned to America, appearing at the Metropolitan Opera1917-18 singing Musetta and Michaela. She married tenor Mario Chamlee,and both began teaching in 1930.

Architect and acoustical designer ROBERT B. NEWMAN, American, 65years old, in Concord, Massachusetts 10/2/83. A co-founder of BoltBeranek and Newman, he was a theatre consultant on acoustics for manyrecently constructed concert halls, such as Davies Hall in San Francisco,Meyerhoff Hall in Baltimore, Thomson Hall in Toronto, the Victoria ArtsCentre in Melbourne, and many others. He was also professor ofarchitecture at M.I.T. and at the Graduate School of Design at Harvard,both in Cambridge.

Conductor FREDERIQUE PETRIDES, Dutch/American, 79 years old, inNew York 1/12/83. In 1933, she founded the Orchestrette Classique deNew York, composed exclusively of women instrumentalists. They playedclassical as well as contemporary music in their regularly scheduledconcerts. She also created a newsletter, "Women in Music", and appearedas guest conductor with orchestras in and around New York.

Tenor and teacher GIOVANNI PULLINI, Italian, 72 years old, in Cesena,Italy 2/27/83. After a debut in Bologna, he sang with various Italianopera companies and also performed in France, Belgium, Monaco, andSpain. Later, he founded a vocal school in Cesena.

Returning to the United States, she metand married Hungarian-born conductor Fritz Reiner, who was, succes-sively, music director of the Cincinnati Symphony, the Pittsburgh Orches-tra, and the Chicago Symphony, and who also conducted at the Metro-politan Opera. After his death she donated his scores and books toNorthwestern University.

Artists manager MICHAEL RIES, American, 65 years old, in New York4/10/83. He represented many internationally famous singers, includingRichard Tucker, Robert Merrill, Dorothy Kirsten, Carol Neblett, SimonEstes, etc., and was a senior vice president of Columbia Artists Manage-ment at the time of his death.

Singing teacher and author ARNOLD ROSE, British, 67 years old, inLondon 2/13/83. In the 1950's, he founded the London School of Singing,and in 1962 he wrote "The Singer and the Voice". A second edition waspublished nine years later, and was republished in 1978. He also wrote"Contemporary Exercises for Classical and Popular Singers".

Tenor MIECZYSLAV SALECKJI, Polish, 89 years old, in Warsaw 7/19/82.Soon after his debut in Warsaw, he joined the Dresden State Opera,where he sang under Fritz Busch. He appeared as a guest in majortheatres in other German cities and in France, and, in turn, became amember of the Russian, Prague, and Zurich opera companies. AfterWorld War II, he retired from the stage and taught voice in Warsaw.

Soprano MARTHA SCHELLENBERG, German, 87 years old, in Munich3/22/83. After appearing in various provincial German theatres, shemade her Munich debut in 1924, remaining with the company until 1938.During that period she was a guest in leading theatres in Vienna,Switzerland, Greece, and Spain. She was equally comfortable in therepertoires of both opera and operetta, and had over 100 different rolesat her command.

Bass SAM STERNBERG, American, 75 years old, in New York 7/22/83.A member of the chorus of the Metropolitan Opera for thirty-sevenyears, he was also much in demand as a cantor, both here and in LatinAmerica.

Soprano LIANE SYNEK, Austrian, 61 years old, in Hollabrun, Austria9/6/82. After brief appearances at the Vienna Staatsoper in the early50's, she was engaged as the leading dramatic soprano in Wiesbaden in1955; she remained with the company until the time of her death. Sheappeared as a guest in other major German opera houses, as well as inItaly, France, and Switzerland. She began her career in 1950 as firstprize winner of an Austrian international music competition.

Tenor THOMAS L. THOMAS, Welsh/American, in Scottsdale, Arizona4/17/83. He was the first winner of the Metropolitan Opera Auditionsof the Air, and sang with the company during the 1936-37 season. Mostof his career was as a radio singer - he joined "The Voice of Firestone"in 1941 and was one of its most popular artists. He also appeared onthe concert stage.

Arranger, and trombonist GERALD (JERRY) VALENTINE, 69 years old,in New York 10/1/83. He was principal arranger for the Billy Ecksteinand Earl Hines bands, and also made arrangements for the orchestras ofTommy Dorsey, Count Basie, and Benny Goodman, as well as for individualartists such as Sarah Vaughan. He also wrote for Al Capp and for theU.S. Army. He was in charge of Artists and Repertory for such recordingcompanies as National, Prestige, Capitol, Columbia, and RCA.

Concert manager J. J. VINCENT, Russian/American, 91 years old, inNew York 3/7/83. After his arrival in the United States in 1924, hebegan to book opera and stage performers. He later became managingdirector of the German Grand Opera Company in New York.

Composer ROY WEBB, American, 94 years old, in Santa Monica 12/10/82.He wrote the music for a number of variety shows, and composed manyimportant film scores. He was one of the founders of the AmericanSociety of Composers, Authors and Publishers (ASCAP).

Composer and humanitarian VALLY WEIGL, Austrian/American, 88 yearsold, in New York 12/25/82. She studied composition in Vienna with KarlWeigl, whom she later married. In 1938, they came to the United Statesand both continued composing here. She also began teaching, first atthe Institute for Avocational Music and for the American Theatre Wing,and later as chief music therapist at the New York Medical College.After the death of her husband, she worked to promote his musicallegacy. In 1964, she was elected chairman of the Arts Friends for WorldUnity.

Tenor GERHARD WITTING, German, 92 years old, in Berlin 12/25/82.He was a member of the Berlin State Opera ensemble from 1923 to1953. He created the role of Andres in the world premiere of Wozzeck,and also participated in the first performances of operas by Lothar andDessau. He sang at the Bayreuth Festival in 1934, and again in 1944,and made guest appearances in Italy, Holland, and France.

Pianist and teacher IRMA WOLPE, Rumanian/American, 81 years old, inNew York 1/6/84. A concert pianist, she performed and promoted musicby her composer husband, the late Stefan Wolpe. She taught at Swarth-more College and at the New England Conservatory, and several of herpupils went on to international careers. Her marriage to Mr. Wolpeended in divorce.

Bass GOTTLIED ZEITHAMMER, Austrian, 78 years old, in Zurich 6/17/82.After a debut in Breslau in 1926, he performed for several years inWiesbaden, Nurenberg, Munich, Leipzig, and at the Komische Oper EastBerlin, successively. From 1948 to 1975 he sang major bass roles atthe Zurich Opera. He was married to soprano Hildegard Armbruster.

Conductor ROBERT ZELLER, American, 63 years old, in Dallas 12/5/82.A student of Serge Koussevitzky and Pierre Monteux, he made his debutat the Berkshire Music Festival in Tanglewood. He went on to conductfor many major ballet companies, and also led the Metropolitan Operaorchestra and several symphony orchestras. He was named music directorof the Grand Rapids Symphony in 1960. Foreign engagements took himto Vienna, Paris, Tel Aviv, and Budapest. •
