Central Instrumentation Centre

Central Instrumentation Centre (CIC) facility, at AITAM, has been created with an objective of

providing a central facility of latest and advanced instruments to the faculty and students of all the

departments of the institute. It houses highly sophisticated instrumentation equipment. Also the centre

provides service to troubleshoot and maintenance of Electrical and Electronic Instruments like,

ammeters, voltmeters, CROs, RPS, etc., This centre is established and maintained by the department

of Electronics and communication Engineering.

OBJECTIVES:

To acquire and develop capability for preventive maintenance and repair of Electrical and

Electronic Instruments.

To provide facilities of instrumentation equipment to students and faculty.

To train technicians for maintenance and operation of instruments.

FACILITY AVAILABLE:

1. RTD

2. LVDT

3. CAPACITIVE TRANSDUCER

4. STROBOSCOPE

5. BOURDON TUBE

RTD Principle and working:

RTD is abbreviated as Resistance Temperature Detector. All conductors have a positive

temperature coefficient of resistance (PTCR) .This type of transducer is used for temperature

measurement. The basic concept used is that electrical resistance of metal changes in accordance with

the temperature. Principle used is that the resistance of a conductor changes in proportion with the

change in temperature.

The unknown temperature is determined in terms of electrical resistance of the conductor, which

senses the temperature. The change in resistance of this device is precisely determined by resistive

bridge circuit or by ohmmeter.

LVDT

LVDT stands for linear variable differential transformer. It works on the principle of mutual induction

LVDT. It consists of one primary coil and two secondary coils, wounded on a non-magnetic form and

Ferro-magnetic core is placed between primary and secondary coils through form as shown in figure.

CAPACITIVE TRANSDUCER

The principle of operation of capacitive transducers is based upon the familiar capacitance equation of

parallel plate capacitor

d

AC

Farads

where C = capacitance

A = area of each plate

D = Distance between the plates

= Permittivity constant

The capacitance transducer consists of two half circular parallel plates, one is fixed and other is

movable on a common shaft, as shown in fig. Angular displacement to be measured is applied to the

moving plate. This angular displacement, changes the effective area between the plates, causing

changes in the capacitance. This change is linear because change in area and hence capacitance is

directly proportional to angular displacement.

Page 4: Central Instrumentation Centre · STROBOSCOPE A stroboscope is an instrument that emits a series of brief, intense flashing lights at specific intervals. Principle and working . When

STROBOSCOPE

A stroboscope is an instrument that emits a series of brief, intense flashing lights at specific intervals.

Principle and working

. When the flashing light from a stroboscope is directed the rotating disk which is connected to

the shaft whose speed to be measured. The stroboscope makes, the disk rotating at high speed appear to

stand still due to the visual persistence of the human eye and the mark on it.

When the frequency of the flashing lights from the stroboscope is adjusted to synchronize with the disk

rotating speed, the number of apparently stationary mark you see corresponds to the actual number of

marks.

BOURDON TUBE

Most pressure measuring devices use elastic members for sensing pressure at the primary stage. These

elastic members are of many types and convert pressure into mechanical displacement which is after

converted into an electrical form. These devices are many a time known as “force summing devices”.

The principle of working of these devices is; the fluid whose pressure is to be measured is made to press

the pressure sensitive element and since the element is an elastic member, it deflects causing a

mechanical displacement. The displacement is proportional to the pressure applied. The displacement is

then measured with help of electrical transducers. The output of electrical transducers is proportional to

Page 5: Central Instrumentation Centre · STROBOSCOPE A stroboscope is an instrument that emits a series of brief, intense flashing lights at specific intervals. Principle and working . When

displacement and hence to the applied input pressure.

The commonly used pressure sensitive device is Bourdon tubes. The bourdon tubes are

designed in various forms. These are:

C type

Spiral

Twisted

Helical.

The Bourdon tubes are made out of an elliptically flattered tube bent in such a way as to

produce the above mentioned shapes. One end of the tube is seated or closed. The other end is open for

the fluid to enter. When the fluid, whose pressure is to be measured enters the tube, the tube tends to

straighten out on account of the pressure applied. This causes a movement of the free end and the

displacement of this end is amplified through mechanical linkages. The amplified displacement of free

end may be used to move a pointer on a scale calibrated in terms of pressure or may be applied to a

electrical displacement transducer whose output may be called in terms of the pressure applied.

The C type Bourdon element is most commonly used for local indication but it is also used for

pressure transmission & control applications. The tube which is oval in section is formed into an arc of

2500 and hence the name C for the configurations, which is as shown in the fig.

The displacement of tip is:

Δa=0.05

333.02.0

t

x

y

x

p

r

E

ap

Where E is the modulus of elasticity:N/m2

P is the applied pressure:N/m2

Thus relationship between the displacement of tip and the applied pressure is non linear i.e

each pressure increment doesn’t produce a corresponding tip movement .However, a linear relationship

between the deflection of the pointer and the applied pressure is obtained using the geared sector and

pinion movement or other mechanical means .The accuracy of C type Bourdon tubes varies from ±0.5%

to ±2% or poorer. However the normal accuracy is about ±1%.
