Point your vehicle towards the rolling hills of Bonshaw for an unparalleled cider experience at Riverdale Orchard & Cidery that is one part PEI, two parts Scottish (you’ll understand once you get there). Deep cultural roots and a fascinating history that spans centuries have shaped every facet of our island community and way of life - from our language to our food to our industries to our arts and entertainment.

As you explore the central coastal region, take time to visit some of the area’s many historical sites. They’ll give you a glimpse into the Island’s fascinating past, its original inhabitants - the Mi’kmaq - and its early European settlers, including the Acadiens, Irish, Scottish, and British. Whether you’re a history buff or culturally- curious, you’ll find plenty of treasures to unearth as you visit National Historic Sites, tiny communities, heritage buildings, monuments, and more.

On the North Shore, west of Kensington, find your way to Darnley, a gorgeous coastal community first inhabited by the Mi’kmaq. Their legacy remains alive and strong in this area of the Island - cast your gaze across the waters of Malpeque Bay and you’ll spot Lennox Island, home to a strong and vibrant Mi’kmaq First Nations community. Centuries ago, the Mi’kmaq people used Darnley as a portage route from Lennox Island to the North Shore as you travel along Route 20, take note of the Darnley Bridge. This area used to be known as Burial Point because human skeletons were unearthed during the bridge’s construction and it was confirmed that this location was a sacred Mi’kmaq burial site.

Another historic hotspot on the North Shore is Rustico, the Island’s oldest Acadian settlement. Just east of Cavendish, this vibrant French community retains and celebrates its language, its authentic Acadien food, and its cherish cultural traditions, including lively music and dance.

While in Rustico, be sure you pay a visit to the Farmers’ Bank. This National Historic Site is considered a symbol of Acadian survival and an architectural monument. The site hosts lectures, soirees (that’s French for parties), and culinary experiences.

There’s also a genealogical centre where you can learn more about the Acadien settlers in the area and, perhaps, your own Acadien connection.

Take a drive even further east along the North Shore and you’ll happen upon Glenalandale Estate. This majestic estate, which includes 530 acres of mixed woods and farmland on Tracadie Bay, as well as the magnificent Glenalandale House, is filled with centuries of history and significance. From the Battle of Culloden to PEI’s Mi’kmaq, Acadian, Scottish, and Irish people, Glenaladale has many layers to its story. Bring along a picnic to enjoy on the grounds or simply take a quiet walk and let yourself feel the tides of time ebbing and flowing in the breeze.

On the South Shore, make your way to Skmaqn-Port-La-Joye-Fort Amherst National Historic Site of Canada. Here, you’ll learn more about how the struggles for control of North America affected the Island’s early settlers and its Mi’kmaq founders. You’ll also get to enjoy breathtaking water views and an extensive trail system that leads to an old British Fort.

Beyond the many historic sites in the central coastal region, be on the lookout for other opportunities to experience the Island’s rich culture - from local ceilidhs to cultural festivals, historic re-enactments, theatre performances and more.

A final tip: the best way to discover the region’s culinary delights is simply to take your time exploring the many country roads, small communities, and towns. Stop when you see a farmstand. Ask the locals where they love to eat. Go down to the docks and watch the lobster fishers unloading their catch. Be curious and Canada’s Food Island will reward you in spades - or lobsters, bar clams and potatoes.

Fancy learning the principles of organic farming or how to properly shuck an oyster? Make your way to The Table Culinary Studio in New London for an unforgettable experience in the field or on the water, followed by a chef-led cooking class in their gorgeous converted church.

Start your tour off in Cavendish, the heart of Montgomery’s literary inspiration and home to Green Gables. If you’re up for a half-day of adventuring in Anne’s land, take the self-guided Cavendish Walking Tour and visit eight key sites of interest, including Montgomery’s Cavendish home, the Haunted Wood, the Cavendish Cemetery, Green Gables Heritage Place, and Montgomery Park.

The whole family will love visiting Avonlea Village in Cavendish, where unique shops and eateries housed in heritage-style buildings pay homage to the fictional 19th-century hometown of Anne Shirley. While there, be sure to stock up on sweet treats (including Raspberry Cordial) at Anne of Green Gables Chocolates and find the perfect memento to bring home at The Anne of Green Gables Store.

If you love wine as much as you learning, make your way to the Island Honey Wine Company in Wheatley River and learn how honey wine (also known as mead) is made. And yes, your tutelage will also include sampling a number of their products.
