“IBM Database Management Systems: Trends and Directions”

Namik Hrle,

IBM VP/CTO for IBM Data Management Business Analytics, Big Data and Systems of Engagement create new requirements that profoundly affect database management systems technology. Columnar orientation, in-memory databases, no-SQL stores and Hadoop integration are the key trends that have already proven their values in some of the most challenging application workloads. At the same time, traditional, relational database management systems are still irreplaceable foundations for a large majority of mission critical, core business applications. Where do traditional IBM offerings: DB2 for z/OS, DB2 for LUW and IMS fit in with these new technology trends and business requirements? What is IBM's strategy to remain the industry leader under the new conditions and continue to be the choice for the most demanding data serving workloads? These questions and more will be answered in this keynote presentation which will discuss how IBM is bringing together all data in all paradigms (transactional, analytical, unstructured, etc.). Namik Hrle is an IBM Fellow and works in the IBM Boeblingen Laboratory. He is a member of the IBM Academy of Technology, IBM Fellows Leadership Team, SWG Architecture Board Steering Committee and many other IBM's expert teams. He specializes in analytics and information management technology and its usage by the enterprise applications. He works closely with the IBM labs worldwide and helps customers deploy and optimally exploit analytics and information management products. He is currently developing IBM DB2 Analytics Accelerator which augments DB2 with industry leading complex query performance and appliance simplicity.

DB2 FOR z/OS

“Tuning Queries Like a DB2 Developer” Jason Alpers

DB2 for z/OS Optimizer Development T, IBM Silicon Valley Lab. Tuning DB2 applications for optimal DB2 performance does not need to be a complex exercise. Most SQL performance problems can be easily solved by identifying and resolving differences between optimizer's expectations and reality. In this session, we'll walk through the process used at the lab to identify and resolve access path performance problems. We'll discuss the primary reasons optimizer "gets it wrong" along with options to correct the poor performance.

“Partitioning and indexing - Query performance considerations” Jason Alpers

DB2 for z/OS Optimizer Development Team, IBM Silicon Valley Lab. Will this index reduce I/O? When is a partitioned index a PI vs a DPSI? When can I use DPSIs? Knowing the answers to these questions can help identify how to design indexes for improved performance, and choose partitioning columns to balance data maintenance and query performance. This presentation will outline how the DB2 optimizer processes these indexes, and what has been delivered in DB2 11 for z/OS to improve query performance for indexes on partitioned tablespaces. Jase Alpers is part of the DB2 for z/OS optimizer development team out of the IBM Silicon Valley Lab. He is a frequent speaker on DB2 query optimization having presented at IOD as well as many DB2 user groups over the years. Jase has more than 12 years of experience with DB2 in application development, consulting, DB2 support, and DB2 optimizer development. Prior to joining the DB2 optimizer team, Jase led the SQL performance and Relational Data SystemsDB2 support teams. Jase's work is focused on deep dive analysis and resolution of SQL performance problems as well as driving improvements to DB2 query optimization. For DB2 11 for z/OS, Jase designed and delivered the enhancement to externalize missing statistics during query optimization.

“DB2 11 for z/OS Migration Planning and Early Experiences” John Campbell

IBM Silicon Valley Lab. This is a double session titled "DB2 11 for z/OS Migration Planning and Early Experiences". The overall objective of this session is to help customers migrate as fast as possible to DB2 11, but to do it safely. Specifically this session will cover: share lessons learned, surprises, pitfalls; provide

“Comparing IBM DB2 for z/OS’s Hybrid Transaction and Analytics Platform to Oracle” Brain Laube

Manulife Many vendors offer DB2 performance monitoring tools (Omegamon XE for DB2 from IBM, INSIGHT for DB2 from CA, etc). These tools often provide the capability to create your own DB2 Performance Database where you can store DB2 trace output. When you have DB2 trace output stored in a DB2 table then answering DB2 system and DB2 application performance questions is relatively easy for DBAs and interested end-users. It is much easier for an end-user to query a DB2 Performance Database compared to running ACCOUNTING or STATISTICS reports. And once the population of the DB2 Performance Database is automated then there is whole world of easy ad-hoc monitoring that is possible. This presentation will show the relatively simple steps to create a DB2 performance database using Omegamon for DB2 as an example. The outline will include the Performance Database

DB2 FOR LINUX, UNIX and WINDOWS

“DB2 10.5 and Native Encryption (Hackers need not attend!)” George Baklarz

IBM Toronto DB2 10.5 recently introduced native encryption support to the product. This session will describe the requirements behind encryption (like why it's not nice to lose your data!), encryption terminology, how encryption is implemented within DB2, and how you can take advantage of this on your Intel or Power8 hardware. If you need to secure your DB2 database, make sure you pay attention to native encryption!

“Cloud 101 for a DB2 DBA” Chris Eaton IBM Toronto

How do DB2 DBAs get into “the cloud”? What do we need to know to help our companies leverage cloud services and why should we bother (other than the CIO in my company is asking what our cloud strategy is for database)? In this session we will start with some Cloud 101 topics like what infrastructure as a service and platform as a service really means and what a DBA needs to know about each. We will focus on Softlayer which is IBMs cloud platform and also Bluemix which is the hosting location for dashDB and SQLDB (both of which are managed DB2 offerings in the cloud). I will cover where the softlayer data centers are as many companies have to comply with regulatory requirements for where their data must reside. I will also discuss how to create DB2 instances on the cloud and what you can and can’t do with them (that is, what DBA activities are managed for me and what do I have control over). We will complete the cloud 101 discussion with a DB2 persons view of how I link in other data services and why I would or would not use them like Cloudant, dataWorks, Watson Analytics and BigInsights on Cloud. Chris Eaton is a Worldwide Technical Specialist for IBM’s Information Management products focused on Database Technology and Workload Optimized Systems. Chris has been working with DB2 on the Linux, UNIX, and Windows platform for over 20 years. He is the author of several books in the data management space and is an international award winning speaker. Chris also has one of the most popular blogs about DB2 on IT Toolbox at http://it.toolbox.com/blogs/db2luw.

“Performance "Worst Practices" for DB2 LUW” Steve Rees IBM Canada

This somewhat tongue-in-cheek session brings you an hour of performance 'Worst Practices' - the things you'd want to do, if you actually wanted your system to underperform! We present real-life examples of accidental 'worst practices' - and warning! some of these will make you cringe a bit. We look at issues including storage and system configuration, application design, choice of SQL, and schema design. This isn't going to be all about the '1 percenter' optimizations, but instead looking at a fairly short list of the main problems you should be on the lookout for, if you've got limited time to worry about performance. And because no one really

wants their system to underperform, we make sure you'll leave the session knowing how to recognize & deal with these problem - just in case any are lurking in your systems.

“DB2 LUW Performance FAQs: Wait ... Tell me that again?” Steve Rees IBM Canada

In this session, we recap some persistent and useful 'frequently asked questions' from previous IDUG 'FAQ' presentations. We'll start it off with some really valuable fundamentals on basic performance monitoring, followed by a simple step-by-step process for investigating performance problems. We'll talk about LOB performance - a topic which continues to come up all the time. We'll look at the VOLATILE keyword and what it means for access plan selection by DB2. We'll dig into usage lists & how they can help you find unused indexes, and how to get the best performance out of user temporary tables & sequences. And last but not least, we'll also through in some brand-new topics as well.

“Everything you ever wanted to know about the IMS Catalog but were afraid to ask” Deepak Kohli

IMS Modernization Guru, IBM The IMS catalog is key to IMS integration capabilities. Although the use of the IMS catalog is optional, there are several exciting new functions in IMS that identify IMS Catalog as a prerequisite: Native SQL, Database Versioning, and .Net access to IMS data, and that list is growing! What does this mean for you? You may ask whether it makes sense to implement the IMS Catalog if you're undecided about implementing the newer functions. How is the IMS Catalog different from the ACBLIB? What happens to the ACBLIB if you implement IMS Catalog? Do disaster recovery procedures need to be changed after the IMS Catalog is implemented? Can IMS systems in a data sharing group share the IMS Catalog? Deepak will help you answer these and more questions.
