Codebook of Record Layouts

Household data files

NLSS household data are organized into 76 separate ASCIIfiles, numbered RT001.DAT to RT076.DAT. Each file correspondsto a different "Record Type", with a one-to-one correspondencebetween record types and modules of the householdquestionnaire. For instance, file RT002.DAT contains recordsfrom the household roster (Section 1A of the questionnaire).

Each file contains fixed-length records of the same type. The first eight columns of each record always have the sameformat:

* Columns 1 to 3 contain the Record Type (i.e., always thedigit "002" for all record in file RT002.DAT.)

* Columns 4 to 6 contain a three-digit Ward Number. Wardsselected for the NLSS sample are numbered from 001 to 275.

* Columns 7 and 8 contain a two-digit Household Number.Households selected for the NLSS are numbered within eachward.

After the Household Number. extra codes may follow todistinguish different records of the same type from the samehousehold. For instance, each record from the household rosteris identified with the two-digit household member ID Code incolumns 9 and 10.

After the identifiers, the answers to questions(henceforth "the variables") are recorded, with a fixed-fieldstructure described in the rest of this codebook, according tothe following labels:

CODE is an internal variable encodement.

RT is the Record Type.

FROM is the starting column of the variable in therecord.

LENGTH is the number of columns used by thevariable.

TYPE specifies the kind of data stored in thevariable. The different types are:

ranges

REMARKS are comments about the variable, such asthe encodement (for qualitative variables),whether the variable is allowed to beblank, etc.

The full NLSS data set occupies about 30 Megabytes. Tosave disk space, the NLSS diskettes contain PKZIP-compressedversions of the ASCII data files (file RT001.ZIP contains fileRT001.DAT and so forth).

Additional data files

The 76 household data files contain the original, unediteddata collected by the NLSS in the field.1 In addition to thesefiles, the NLSS diskettes contains two extra ASCII files withthe results of certain basic computations performed on theoriginal data:

RT090.DAT Contains the raising factors that are needed toobtain unbiased estimates from the sample andother useful information at the ward level, suchas district codes and names.

RT099.DAT Contains household sizes, consumption aggregatesof various items and other useful information atthe household level.

Auxiliary files

The NLSS questionnaire contains more than 800 differentvariables and thousands of codes, which can make the task oftransferring the data to tabulating programs time-consuming anderror-prone, even with the help of this codebook. To assist theusers of common software in this endeavor, the NLSS diskettesalso contain the following auxiliary archives:

NLSS_ARI.ZIP This archive contains Z.ARI, a single file withall variable definitions and encodements neededto structure NLSS data with ARIEL or ARIEL+Plus.

NLSS_DBF.ZIP This archive contains 76 files with the fielddefinitions needed to load the data into DBFfiles (such as those used by dBase, FoxPro and

1The only exception are the family roster records, from which the respondent names have been deleted

in order to preserve the confidentiality of the data.

other data base managers). The encodements ofqualitative variables are not included.

NLSS_SAS.ZIP This archive contains 76 files with the infile, label, proc and value statements needed to loadthe data into SAS

NLSS_SPS.ZIP This archive contains 76 files with the DATALIST, VARIABLE LABELS and VALUE LABELSstatements needed to load the data into SPSS

NLSS_STA.ZIP This archive contains the 76 DCT dictionaryfiles (with variable definitions) and 76 DOfiles (with label define and label valuestatements) needed to load the data into STATA.
