Pastor Lord joins us on March 7

It is with great excitement that we welcome Dr. Clayton Lord (Pastor Cal) as the new pas-tor of Central Baptist Church. Pastor Cal is no stranger to the area as he served as pastor of the Cross Mills Baptist Church in Charles-town, RI (1983-1985) and the First Baptist Church of Norwich, CT (1985-Present). He also currently serves as the ABCCONN area minister for Southeastern Connecticut, and has written a weekly newspaper column for the Norwich Bulletin since 2003. Cal gradu-ated from the University of Connecticut and went on to receive his Master of Divinity from Andover Newton Theological School in 1985

and his Doctor of Divinity degree from Andover in 1996. When I spoke with Cal he said, “I am very excited about the future here at Central Baptist. I can’t wait to get started because I think God has some wonderful things planned for us in the coming years, and it is going to be a great adventure.” We at Central Baptist are also very excited that Cal has responded to God’s call to join and lead our congregation. We look forward to wor-shipping with and getting to know and spend time with Cal, Lori, Re-becca, Sarah and Rachel as we welcome them into our family at Cen-tral Baptist Church. Todd Higgins

Nursery School News Santa’s Arrival at CNS has been a tradition for many years. The children sang songs to Santa and even got to sit on his lap to tell them what they wanted for Christmas! Santa was such a good man for com-ing to CNS because we know how busy he is this time of year. AND a big thank you to Paul Arnold too for all of his help !

This December, we welcomed our first grandchild, Eliana Grace Howell into our family. Many of you already know the joy and hopes that have awakened within us. At the same time, one of my Central Baptist friends gave me as a Christmas present, a book by one of my favorite authors. It has challenged my heart once again to keep my rela-tionship to God in Jesus as my first priority and all other fond hopes and dreams in their proper place. Let me share from SHATTERED DREAMS GOD’S UNEXPECTED PATHWAY TO JOY BY LARRY CRABB.

And then in my vision I see myself pausing, unsure whether I want to even think the words of the deeper prayer stirring within me. Of course I want both my granddaughter and grandson to enjoy lives filled with blessings—good relationships, good health, good

churches, good incomes. It’s just so hard to see all those blessings as second things. I wonder if I will find the courage to keep my glass raised high and to say:

“May this beautiful young woman, still my treasured little granddaughter, discover that place in her heart where she desires You above everything else. May she discover that place in her heart that only love flowing from Yours can fill.

“Please, Lord, shield her from every useless trial, protect her from pointless pain, but—grant me the courage to mean this—allow whatever dreams to shatter that will release her heart to meet Yours, that will empower her to rest in Your ecstatic love, no matter how empty and desperate she may feel.

Reveal the beauty of Your life to her and through her, whatever it takes. But Lord, I beg you—be very gentle.” I wonder. Have I found the place in my heart that wants something more for my granddaughter than a satisfying marriage, good-

looking and well-behaved children, and sufficient resources for an occasional family trip to Disney Word? Do I even believe there is something better?

We so easily pray for ourselves and the people we love that we will all be drawn closer to God. I wonder if we know what we’re asking. Are we asking to enjoy His blessings with little interest in enjoying His Person? Not many of us envy Joni Eareckson Tada’s special opportunity to know Christ well.

When someone shares his story of shattered dreams, our stomachs tighten with fear lest we should meet a similar fate. We dedi-cate our strongest efforts to helping that person feel better because we’re terrified of ever experiencing deep pain that cannot be relieved.

Why? Why do we undervalue intimacy with Christ? Why does the prospect of becoming like Him and close to Him have less ap-peal than other good things?

People who spend their lives in the slums, people who have never seen lakes and trees and flowers, suffer from undeveloped imaginations. They wish for nothing better than that their children live in a tenement with uncracked windows and running water and fewer rats. For a hobo, it’s really living to ride in a railroad car that doesn’t smell.

But God’s children are neither slum dwellers nor hobos. We’ve been empowered to dream bigger dreams than mere earthlings can imagine. In God’s eyes, big houses, happy families, and comfortable bank accounts are in themselves nothing more than rat-free hovels and disinfected cattle cars.

The finest things this world can offer have no compelling appeal to a reborn spirit. They are as nothing compared to the joy of living in His Presence.

I recommend the book. It is a good reminder of God’s great desire for us, and His determination to redeem us and keep us for Himself alone.

This was given to me by a member of our congregation and I thought it was a very appropriate reminder as we enter into this new exciting phase at CBC.

Ten Commandments for Welcoming A New Pastor

1. We will not compare the old Pastor and the new Pastor. God has made each person unique and wants us to appreciate each original creation.

2. We will not expect everything to stay the same. We will not resist change, nor assume change is bad. We will trust God isn't finished with us yet and is bringing change for our good and the good of our mission.

3. We will not keep old disappointments in our hearts, we will forgive and move on in the grace of God.

4. We will not gossip or complain, nor listen to those who do. Instead we will pray that attitudes will adjust for we know that in trusting God every-thing will be alright, in fact, will turn out even better than we can even imagine.

5. We will not spend time talking about how the old days were better, instead we will rest assured that God is the same yesterday, today and tomorrow and can still surprise us with abundant blessings.

6. We will not get into "us-them" division, but will unify with each other even when we annoy and confuse each other.

7. We will not go to our new pastor, individually with our own demands, pressure, complaints, bad reports, manipulations, threats, agendas, or unsolicited advice. Instead say "Welcome! How can we help you?"

8. We will increase our giving - our money, time and talents to the future of our church and mission.

9. We will bring any concerns about our new Pastor to God in humble prayer, and if directed by the Holy Spirit, share these concerns privately with the appropriate leaders of the church.

10. Most important, we will trust God, stay connected to God, draw strength from God, staying deeply rooted in the message of God's grace. For God is good and God will never leave us nor forsake us. We can count on that for sure!

Pastoral Search Committee Report

I expect that this will be our last report. We have been so blessed throughout this process that it is truly amaz-ing to me. I am personally most thankful for the other members of the committee. They are a wonderful group of people to have worked with. We often had different ideas about various things, but we always worked things out and came to a consensus that everyone was happy with. Everyone contributed ideas and insights and worked tirelessly putting in many hours reading, investigating and searching for information. I also want to personally thank our Moderator, Mere-dith Eckel, for pulling the committee together. It was her wisdom and sensitivity to the Lords calling that made that pos-sible.

We always tried to keep in mind that we were doing God’s work and He was our guide. We are so thankful to Him. All through the process we could see His hand at work. He brought about the final outcome, in spite of us some-times heading in a different direction.

We are thankful for Pastor Hiltsley’s prayerful support and his personal guidance given to me. We are also very thankful to Reverend Dr. Clayton Lord and his wonderful family for seeing something in CBC that makes all of the life changing decisions that they now face worthwhile to them.

We are also very thankful for the prayers, support and patience of the entire congregation. Thank you, also, to all the people who helped with the events during the candidating week and all those that took the time to attend the events.

Pastor Lord, Cal, as he likes to be called, has told us that he will be able to start on March 7th and his first wor-ship service will be March 13th. Each of us needs to take some time before then to think about our part in the process going forward. It will be my personal goal to be ever vigilant, looking for ways to help and support Cal in any way that I can. I pray that everyone in the congregation will do the same. Our success as a church will be inseparably tied to Cal’s success as our pastor. He will need every member’s help. Please think about being quick to offer help and support and very slow to criticize. I don’t believe that the words “helpful” and “criticism” go together.

Please continue to pray for our church and for Cal, his family and his church in this time of separating from the people he has served for over 25 years.

Opening the Book of Romans This class will study the letter that the Apostle Paul wrote to Christians living in Rome. Romans is seen as the key document in the New Testa-ment by many theologians. Martin Luther referred to this letter as the ‘chief part of the New Testament and the purest gospel.’ This brief seven-lesson study will be an introduction to the Book of Romans and will study the themes of Righteousness, Freedom in God’s Grace and Living in Community. God’s Gifts To Us By John Macomber

Shortly before Christmas, while rummaging through a box of old family documents, I came across an old book of poetry I hadn’t seen for several years. It was my Grandmother Macomber’s childhood book of poetry. She had re-gifted it to me on Christmas 1943. At the time I was 14 years old and as a young teenager was more interested in the latest baseball, football and basket-ball statistics rather than a book of poetry. So, I tucked it away, out of sight, and out of mind, not to be used for many years. Now, 67 years later, I have rediscovered and read my grandmother’s gift. I am sure that my dear grandmother would be very pleased - even if I did procrastinate a bit. This caused me to think about my reaction to gifts that God bestows on us on a daily basis. God’s gifts to us vary from individual to individual and we find ourselves guilty, on too many occa-sions, of tucking them away, out of sight and out of mind, in the same manner as my old book of poetry. We very often fail to recognize them, give them proper respect and thank God for them. A Billy Graham Devotional entitled ‘Hope For Each Day’ uses, as a scripture reference, Romans 12:6 - “We have different gifts, according to the grace given us”, and then he goes on to say - “God our Father has given gifts to each of us, and I pray we never become discontent or bored with them.” The greatest gift of all, of course, is the gift of His Son. But the Bible also teaches that God has given us other gifts - gifts that come from the Holy Spirit’s ministry in our lives. These are the gifts of the spirit and they include everything from the gift of preaching to the gift of hospitality. None of us has every gift, but every Christian has at least one, to be used for one purpose: To build up Christ’s Body, the Church (Eph. 4: 11 - 12) What spiritual gift has God given you? Don’t worry about those you don’t have. Be content with those God has given you, and use them for His glory. In our church hymnal on page 285, the hymn ‘For Your Gift of God the Spirit’ says in part: “For your gift of God the Spirit, power to make our lives anew, pledge of life and hope of glory, Savior, we would worship you. Crowning gift of resurrection sent from your ascended throne; fullness of the very Godhead come to make your life our own. Fill us with your holy fullness, God the Father, Spirit, Son; in us, through us, then, forever shall your perfect will be done.” Amen


In The Spotlight

John & Barbara Mathewson

Only minutes into my visit to the home of John and Barbara Mathewson in Pawcatuck, I became aware of their deep enthusiasm for two avocations they have found in retirement: Barbara's radiant pleasure in oil painting and John's exuberant enjoyment of golf. Barbara takes lessons in painting at the Pawcatuck Neighborhood Center enjoying the relaxation it provides. John said he would play golf all day if his en-ergy allowed, but he has managed to play at Pequot every other day for the last three years when he "got serious about golf". He started with a thirty-plus handicap and is now at eighteen. Barbara's idea of a wonderful day would include swimming at the ocean, quahoging in Brightman's Pond, and hosting a family party.

Barbara and John have earned the relaxation their pursuits bring -- they have reared six children! All but one (Karen who lives in Georgia) still live nearby. From oldest to youngest they are Kellee, Dana, Karen, Susan, and the twins, Tracy and Travis. Kellee and Susan work at Foxwoods, Dana teaches classes in training dogs and shows her own dogs, Karen is a DCF social worker, Tracy is self-employed, and Travis works at Pfizer. The grandchildren now number thirteen and are in and out of their grandparent’s home often.

Barbara's parents, Roger and Celeste Gould, lived on High Street in Westerly when she was born; John was born in New London. When Barbara was a sophomore and John a junior at Stonington High, she asked him to go on a hayride date in her uncle's horse-drawn wagon. Because the Gould family moved to North Stonington, she graduated from Wheeler High School in June l959. On August 1 of that year, Barbara and John were married at Central Baptist by Rev. Gardner. Two years ago John was inducted into the Stonington Athletic Hall of Fame, having been an all-state captain of the school's football team. For thirty years John worked for the Connecticut Light and Power Company. He was a senior technician responsible for planning for energy needs in new developments. He also worked as a reserve police officer for twenty years. Be-sides mothering six children, Barbara worked in Stonington Schools as a teacher's aide especially liking work with the kindergarten class. She retired five years ago from a nine year job at Foxwoods. She has done all the home arts; she has crocheted, knitted, quilted, done calligraphy, gardened, preserved produce, baked, even made John's neckties.. The Mathewsons' travels have taken them to Alaska, to San Diego by way of a Panama Canal cruise, to the Caribbean on a cruise, to Costa Rica, to Yellowstone and Custer National Parks, and to Salt Lake City among others. They still laugh about their visit to Billings, Montana, in 2008 when they kept seeing men in suits and sneakers around their hotel later to realize that Hillary Clinton was staying on the top floor. Barbara reads "light stuff" especially Nora Roberts; John is a fan of John Grisham's novels. Barbara's mother saved all the beautiful little Sunday School documents that show advancement to higher grades. Thus, her lifelong association with Central Baptist Church is fully attested. John became a member after their wedding and subsequently a deacon. Barbara is secretary to the Mission Board and has served on the parish ministry and flower com-mittees. She cites little deeds like hugs from Barbara Higgins and a small cross made of palm leaves that Tony Perrone made and gave her one Easter as examples of the pleasure of Christian fellowship she enjoys at church. Not until inter-viewing Barbara did I realize that she is the daughter of the late Roger Gould, my choir friend who anchored the bass section with his gorgeous tones and enriched the choir loft with his humor. This connection is an example of the many surprises interviewing for the Spotlight has brought.

History of Groundhog Day The legend of Groundhog Day is based on an old Scottish couplet: "If Candlemas Day is bright and clear, there'll be two winters in the year." Every February 2, people gather at Gobbler's Knob, a wooded knoll just outside of Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania. Residents contend that the groundhog has never been wrong.

The ceremony in Punxsutawney was held in secret until 1966, and only Phil's prediction was revealed to the public. Since then, Phil's fearless fore-cast has been a national media event. The groundhog comes out of his electrically heated burrow, looks for his shadow and utters his prediction to a Groundhog Club representative in "groundhogese." The representa-

tive then translates the prediction for the general public. If Punxsutawney Phil sees his shadow, it means six more weeks of winter. If he does not see his shadow, it means spring is just around the corner. Approximately 90% of the time, Phil sees his shadow. Phil started making predictions in 1887 and has become an American institution.
