Dear Friends,

Fr. Tom asked me to take his column this weekend to inform the parish about an important event that will be taking place during the month of October. Fr. Ryan Ruiz of Mount St. Mary’s Seminary, Karen Kane of the Office of Divine Worship & Sacraments, and I will be conducting a series of Evenings of Reflection and Formation for Extraordinary Ministers and Lectors. These will be the first of their kind events in that those—both existing Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion and those who wish to become Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion—who attend these sessions will be certified to serve as ministers in all of the parishes of the Archdiocese. Attendees will receive a certificate at the conclusion of the evening and will also receive an ID card from the Office of Worship which they can use whenever and wherever they are called upon to minister in the Archdiocese.

The evenings will cover the most recent liturgical norms and practices for the distribution of Holy Communion from the General Instruction of the Roman Missal, as well as the particular norms for the Archdiocese of Cincinnati from the recently published, This Holy and Living Sacrifice: A Formation Resource for Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion.

We want to extend a personal invitation to:- all existing Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion, - all who wish to become Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion, - those who are already bringing Holy Communion to the sick and dying in nursing homes, Mercy Hospital and Hospice, and - all existing Lectors and those who wish to become lectors.

The evening of prayer, reflection and renewal for our deanery will be held on October 23rd at St. Mary’s Parish in Hyde Park located on 2853 Erie Avenue, 45208, beginning at 7 p.m. The two-hour program will conclude with Intercessory Prayer and Blessing.

Fr. Tom would also like to invite all other parishioners who are interested in: going deeper on our Theology of the Eucharist, reflecting on the meaning and power of the Eucharist and renewing your hearts and minds on our Eucharistic Liturgy, to also attend. In short, we hope that many in the parish decide to take advantage of this special and unique opportunity.

For those who may have concerns about driving to Hyde Park, or who might have schedule issues, there is an alternate event that is “closer to home.” An event for present and prospective Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion only will be held at St. Thomas More in Withamsville on October 9th at 7 p.m.

We do ask that you register to attend either of these programs in advance by calling the IHM Parish Office at 388-4466. Additional information can be found on the Archdiocesan website by following this link: www.catholiccincinnati.org/ministries-offices/worship/.

Please make attending one of these evenings of renewal and formation a priority. It will be enriching and most worthwhile.

Thank you,

Deacon David Shea

Saturday Mass and Rosary to end abortionEvery Saturday at 8am, all year long, IHM joins Helpers of God’s Precious Infants at Holy Name Church (2 blocks from PP Clinic on Auburn Ave.) for a Pro-Life Mass and then processes to the front of Planned Parenthood at 2314 Auburn Ave to pray the Rosary. Deacon Dave Shaffer leads the rosary.

Weekly Rosaries at IHMEvery Sunday at 8:50 a.m. (after the 7:30 a.m. Mass and before the 9:30 a.m. Mass), we gather in the Church to pray a rosary.

Every Monday, Wednesday and Friday after the noon Mass, people gather to pray a rosary in the church.

Every Saturday morning at 7:45 a.m. before the 8:15 a.m. Mass we gather to pray a rosary in the church.

Every evening in May and October, we pray the rosary in the Marian grotto at 7 p.m.

Encountering Christ Today:Today, as we encounter Jesus in the Gospel reading, Jesus is teaching us the value of being humble servants. “If anyone wishes to be first, he shall be the last of all and the servant of all.” To follow Jesus means to be looking for ways to help and assist others in any way we can. Jesus sets out a child as an example when he says, “Whoever receives one child such as this in my name, receives me; and whoever receives me, receives not me but the One who sent me.” Jesus uses the child because in the culture of that time, children were not seen as important. In God’s eyes, serving the least important person is a way to serve Jesus and His Father. In your state in life, how can you be a humble servant? Who are the people that you can receive? Pray that the Holy Spirit gives you the grace you need to respond to those He puts in your path this week.

We, in the United States, hear the clarion call of the Holy Spirit, through the Immaculata, and each of us sound the reply:

“I’m Going In!”

We share the conviction, now seen and acted upon in the International community, to enter fully into the spiritual warfare we are facing and to pray for our respective nations at this watershed moment in history.

“Who am I to Judge?”Pope Francis famously made this statement regarding priests with same sex attraction. But what underlies this quote? As Francis makes clear in his writings, both the Church and we as individuals, must continuously show mercy to those around us (and ourselves) who are broken, failing, and need healing, even as we urge each other to live virtuously in communion with God. As the Pope states, we are all sinners and in need of God’s mercy. Some consider Catholics/Christians judgmental and intolerant. Can we live lives of mercy while upholding the teachings of our faith?

All Good and Holy God—Father, Son and Holy Spirit

—we beg your divine protection upon the church as she endures these terrible clerical scandals.

Unlike the majority of good and holy priests, who sacrificially devote their lives to the service of the

Church, there have dwelt among us some false shepherds who have deeply wounded your flock. These “weeds among the wheat” have wantonly

broken faith with you and have forsaken their vows to chastely serve the people of God. Many of those given authority to govern your Church have turned a blind eye to these unimaginable atrocities, thus giving further scandal by enabling these horrific

sins. We beg you O Lord for a just resolution to each and every crime committed against your flock, and that by a life of prayer and penance those who are

guilty of such things may find true contrition.

We place the Church under the unwavering protection of the Ever-Virgin Mary and St. Joseph,

her most chaste spouse. By their loving care for your children, may the Church undergo a profound renewal of purity and awaken true devotion among

the people of God. Bless and uphold all faithful clergy and consecrated religious, that they may

grow in holiness and not abandon the vocations you have called them to. May we all sincerely commit our lives more deeply to a fervent practice of our

Catholic Faith, that by doing so we may make reparation for all those who have so grievously

offended and betrayed you. Amen.

12 We are a welcoming Catholic community centered in the Eucharist,

If we have no peace it is because we have forgotten we belong to each other.

Mother Theresa Looking at the world around us, it can be difficult to believe we are all members of one family and children of the same Father. There is separation within homes, communities, our country, and around the world. Things will only improve when we have peace in our own hearts and carry that peace out into the world.

As part of Respect Life weekend, October 6th and 7th, we will renew our pledge to be instruments of peace in our lives. We ask that you take some time now to read through the pledge at home, discuss situations where you can apply it, and encourage one another to follow the call of Jesus to live the role of peacemakers in our world. On the Pledge weekend, copies will be in the pews and we will say the pledge together as the closing prayer of the petitions. Prayer for Nonviolence Loving God, I come before you, trying to be gentle and nonviolent, wanting our world to be more just and more peaceful. Strengthen in me the desire to follow the call of Jesus, who taught us “Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons and daughters of God.” Help me to model my life on the way of Jesus,

• by striving for peace within myself and seeking to be a peacemaker in my daily life;

• by embracing and promoting a consistent respect for all life as Your creation;

• by seeking to avoid hurting others, asking forgiveness when I do, and forgiving those who hurt me;

• by giving encouragement to others and showing deep respect even when we disagree;

• by making choices in my life-style that protect the earth and honor the needs of all people;

• by challenging violence in all it’s forms whenever I encounter it, whether at home, at work or school, in our community or in the world;

• and by standing with others who are treated unjustly and abused. Deepen in me Your compassion, that I may grow ever more faithful in following Your way of love, Amen.

Together in Christ: Saying “Yes” to Missionary Discipleship

Saturday, September 29, from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m.Immaculate Heart of Mary, Heritage Hall 7800 Beechmont Ave., Cincinnati 45255

As our culture becomes increasingly polarized, the Church can offer an alternative message of unity in Christ’s body that has the power to heal a broken

world. Members of our Eastside Region parishes are invited to gather in for a morning of prayer, celebration and encounter, rooted in Pope Francis’ message

in The Joy of the Gospel. Those gathering will include Greater Cincinnati parish respect life, social action and St. Vincent de Paul leaders along with those at

the heart of their work on abortion, environmental justice, immigration, racism, and returning citizens. TOGETHER, we will celebrate a shared

discipleship, bear witness to each person’s calling and encounter the stories of those advocating for life, dignity and justice!

Please RSVP by September 24, https://conta.cc/2BBiOBQIf you have questions, please contact
