BY JOSEPH STASZEWSKI STAFF CORRESPONDENT ONEONTA, N.Y. — Center Moriches coach Chris O’Brien hugged every player as he came off the field. The embrac- es were not in celebration be- cause his boys soccer team lost to Albertus Magnus (Section I), 1-0, yesterday in the Class B state championship game at the National Soccer Hall of Fame. The hugs were in thanks. “He said something another coach wouldn’t say,” senior Joe Brantmeyer said. Which was O’Brien telling each player how much he cared. “I told them I love them,” he said. “I was proud of the effort, not just today. “I’m proud of the effort from getting up at 6 in the morning in August and meet- ing down at the docks to do a two-mile run. I’m proud of the sacrifice players make to try to be the best they can be.” The team was the first in school history to play in a state final. The Red Devils fell behind when Sean Russell’s perfectly placed direct kick sailed across the 18-yard box from the far side and was headed in by Kyle Hoffer to the far post in the 27th minute for Magnus (20-2-1). “The service was perfect and the header was perfect,” O’Brien said. “You want the game to be won on a great goal and I think it was won on a great goal.” Center Moriches (18-2-2) near- ly answered when Brantmeyer bent a 20-yard direct kick around the wall. The ball skid- ded on the grass and was han- dled gingerly by Magnus goal- keeper Andrew Tartara on his knees with less then two min- utes remaining in the first half. One could feel the tension building in an extremely physi- cal game. Each team had a play- er issued a yellow card in the first half, but the aggressive play continued. In the 58th minute, Center Moriches’ Brendan Tyson got into a shoving match with Mag- nus’ Brandon Gruffi along the far sideline in front of the crowd. The exchange became heated enough that Tyson’s father grabbed him in order to restrain him, but Tyson was given a red card for throwing an elbow prior to that. “They had contact earlier in the game,” Brantmeyer said. “It kind of looked like our guy inten- tionally hit him, but that guy hit him just as hard.” Center Moriches played the rest of the game down a man, yet the Red Devils were able to con- tinually attack and to control the game. “We have a lot of heart and let the seniors carry us through,” junior Ryan McInnis said. “If we didn’t have all the seniors on the team we wouldn’t be as strong with a man down. We wanted it bad enough, but we just couldn’t get a goal." Center Moriches had chanc- es, though. McInnis controlled a ball near the far post but sent it wide toward the near post with 5:31 left in the game. The Red Devils’ final chance came with 3:10 left when a well-placed cor- ner kick by Alex West was tipped up by the goalkeeper and then headed out by Kevin Peters. “I played with these guys since I was in the fifth grade,” Brantmeyer said. “It’s a posi- tive and negative. We’d love to win it. It’s also a hardship going down.” CLASS B STATE FINAL At National Soccer Hall of Fame Albertus Magnus . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 1 0—1 Center Moriches . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 0 0—0 Goals - AM: Hoffer. BY JOSEPH STASZEWSKI STAFF CORRESPONDENT ONEONTA, N.Y. — At half- time of the Class B state final yesterday, the Center Moriches boys soccer team huddled with its coaches near the goal to talk strategy. One player was off to the side. Defender Alex West was running sprints and seeing if he could change directions. He had turned his left ankle on his kicking leg when it got tangled with an Albertus Mag- nus defender with 9:36 remain- ing in the first half of Center Moriches’ eventual 1-0 loss to Magnus (I) at the National Soc- cer Hall of Fame. He was helped off the field, hopping on one leg. West thought he was finished for the day. It turned out he wasn’t. “I was thinking I wanted to do my best to get back in so I could help everyone,” he said of his time on the sideline. After having his ankle taped, West tested it to see if wrap- ping had helped. It still didn’t feel strong enough, but he played despite the pain. “I just wanted to push through it and help out my team and try to make the best of it,” he said. It was no surprise to his teammates. “He’s shown a lot of heart from Day 1,” senior Joe Brant- meyer said. “He’s one of those guys that gets unlucky and gets banged up, but he gets right back up.” For West, changing direc- tion and stopping were done with a little more caution than usual in the second half, but the injury had less effect on his kicking ability. He still took all the team’s corner and free kicks. He played them well and long, though Center Moriches couldn’t capitalize. “That’s the senior mentality,” junior Ryan McInnis said. “It’s the last game of your high school career, he got hurt. He pulled it through and came back out.” newsday.com/nzone CLASS B BOYS STATE SOCCER CHAMPIONSHIP: ALBERTUS MAGNUS 1, CENTER MORICHES 0 First shot at title falls short PHOTO BY PATRICK MCCARTHY Center Moriches senior Joe Brantmeyer trips and falls while trying to dribble the ball in front of the Albertus Magnus goal.
