Patients with 100 or more years visited an emergency room more often. The age of the Salamanca’s population increases with increasing life expectancy.

Along with Soria, number of centenarians triplicates the national average.The group of centenarian patients in Salamanca (2012) amounted to 244 persons, 74% female and 26% male.

OBJECTIVE

To analyze the number of patients, clinical data and background of centenarian patients who visited the

Emergency Department

MATERIAL AND METHODS

Retrospective review of medical records of centenarian patients seen in 2012. Data regarding sex, age, background, medical history and patient destination.

Descriptive summary of collected data is done

RESULTS

97 episodes (0.67 per thousand patients treated) are reviewed, with a mean age of 101 years, age rank 100-108. 74 patients took part in this survey

-74 Patients consult 97 times -37 patients were admitted at hospital (38%) -15 patients deceased during admission none in emergencies. (15.4% of total patients )

CONCLUSIONS

-The centenarian patients care is becoming more usual in Emergency Department.-They are patient with high co morbidity and drug use. -The most common urgent diseases are orthopedic injuries and diseases of the circulatory and respiratory systems. -A high proportion of patients died, almost half of those who were admitted.
