Welcome to the St Austell Brewery Celtic Beer Festival 2013

Welcome once again to the St Austell Brewery Celtic Beer Festival 2013 for this, our 15th Festival.

As always it gives us enormous pleasure to host this very special annual event where good company combines with good ale and good music to make what always proves to be a memorable occasion.

I am pleased to be able to report that the Brewery continues to thrive and has indeed enjoyed its busiest summer ever. The wonderful weather that blessed us in July and August was the perfect response to a disappointing (and cold) first six months of the year. We broke a number of records including our largest volume brewed in a month at 11,000 brewers’ barrels.

Tribute continues to be our top selling beer with Proper Job becoming increasingly popular and winning many awards! Our Cornish lager Korev is also winning a number of plaudits and we have been pleasantly surprised by the very positive feedback on its flavour and quality. In addition, a loyal fan base of regular consumers is steadily building.

Although volumes have increased across the Company it has been the increase in sales of bottled beers to supermarkets and exports to 20 countries worldwide that have been stealing the show.

We have had a quieter year on our acquisition of pubs but have recently purchased a site on the Quay at Exeter for which we have

planning permission to create a unique ale and smokehouse that will enjoy an unrivalled location in the centre of Exeter. We are aiming to open for business there in time July 2014.

We continue to develop sales in the Bristol and Bath area on the back of our successful sponsorship deals with Somerset and Gloucestershire Cricket Clubs.

Yet again Roger and his team have been busy in the brew house over the last few weeks brewing over 30 ales for your delectation – enjoy!

As ever your attendance today will be contributing to the proceeds of the Festival which all go towards our St Austell Brewery Charitable Trust. This figure is typically in the region of £10,000 which is donated to good causes in the South West. Thank you for your generous support which is greatly appreciated.

Enjoy yourselves and best wishes for a Happy Christmas and prosperous 2014.

Welcome back to the Brewery cellars and the 15th annual Celtic Beer Festival.

It is hard to believe that this is the 15th time that we have gathered in these historic brewery cellars to enjoy the unique atmosphere of the St Austell Brewery Celtic Beer Festival.

When I joined St Austell Brewery as Head Brewer in April 1999, I already had ideas of creating a unique event that celebrated the core values of beer drinking in the UK. Having left my previous home in Scotland I recalled the ’village bash’ party atmosphere of the CAMRA festival in Alloa, and the professionalism of festivals hosted by Belhaven Brewery. Having also enjoyed the gargantuan celebration of beer that is Munich’s Oktoberfest, I believed that if we could somehow meld the best of these into a single festival we would have a winning formula.

When I suggested the idea of a festival, Estate Director Adam Luck showed me the historic wine cellars under the old brewery buildings. Adam recalled tales from his father George Luck, of the near legendary wine tasting evenings that took place in these cellars during the 1950’s and 60’s. A winning formula doesn’t change with the years. All we had to do was replace the wine with beer.

From the beginning the concept of the festival was that it was to be a ‘not for profit’ celebration of beer and that the festival be run by brewery staff who volunteered their time such that proceeds raised should be used to support charities supporting local people in need.

Welcome From Roger RymanSt Austell Brewery Head Brewer

The November date was selected strategically to kick start the festive party season, and at a time of year that was considered quieter for the Trade. Back then, the Brewery produced perhaps 300 barrels per week, perhaps less in November. We had the time to amass a list of 13 beers from our own brewery, including two special brews from our micro-brewery. These days the brewery is routinely producing over 2,000 barrels per week, yet the brewing team have still found the time to put together a portfolio of 40 of our own beers. This remarkable increase in productivity is testimony to the brewing team that I have the privilege to work with, many of whom have put in their own time outside of their shifts during the week to brew their own creations in the micro-brewery. We have a larger selection of beer brewed at this brewery than in any other year.

The beers from our micro-brewery have become one of the main attractions of this festival. The event offers our brewers a unique opportunity to flex their creative skills. From the weird and wonderful, to the downright intoxicating, the micro-brewery offerings allow our brewers to experiment with the full range of ingredients and processes that enable us to explore the diversity of flavours that we can create in beer. Some of these beers you will only ever try here once. Others have gone on to become core beers in our range. The 1999 festival listed ‘Daylight Robbery.’ The beer which later reincarnated as Tribute. In 2000 we offered ‘I Can’t believe it’s not Bitter’, our first experiment at brewing lagers which in time gave rise to Korev. Other beers that were first tasted at the festival include Clouded Yellow, Admiral’s Ale and Proper Job. Which of the special beers on offer here today may go on to be the Brewery’s next big thing?

The Celtic theme, inspired in part by my migration from Scotland to Cornwall in 1999 may have become diluted a little over the years as we seek to obtain the very best beer for our festival, regardless of origin. However, the role of the Brewery in the heart of the community in Cornwall remains undiminished. Many of our pubs serve as hubs of the community in many villages and towns dotted across the County.

Cornish beer also has become something to be celebrated, for we live in a region that is home to some of the nation’s best and most innovative breweries. An exciting recent development has been the inception of the ’Cornish Brewing Alliance’, a loose association of brewers with common love of beer and a common goal of promoting Cornish beer both at home and to the wider world. For the first time, we have branded the bar in the Old Wine Cellar under the Cornish Brewer’s Alliance. Our aim is to showcase as many as possible of Cornwall’s 29 breweries, and to invite the brewers to attend the festival and mingle with the crowds. So, say nice things about the beer that you are drinking – it was made with heart and passion, and you don’t know who may be standing behind you!

St Austell Brewery Charitable TrustHelping Others Across The South West

The Trust supports charities, good causes and individuals in need in our communities. Here are just a few thank yous we have received...

“A huge huge thank you for your donation for Eli’s bike trailer. He absolutely loves it and we have had a great summer zooming him around in it. He is a right little thrill seeker and the faster and bumpier the ride the better! We really really appreciate your help – we wouldn’t have had half so much fun this summer without it! Roll on next summer!” Dee, Richie & Elijah Foley (Elijah is 2 years old & immobile)

“I am delighted to thank the Trustees for your kind donation of £300 earlier this year. These donations make it possible for us to continue to help people who have spina bifida and hydrocephalus.” Shine

“Our sincere thanks to the Trustees for choosing to support Brainwave this year with a generous donation of £750. This is a much valued contribution towards the Charity’s goal of helping Phoebe from Helston achieve her full potential.” Brainwave

Every penny of profit from the Beer Festival goes back to the community, so thank you for coming, thank you for your continued support and thank you for helping us to help others.

If you would like to nominate a good cause or charity, or would like further information about the trust, please contact us at St Austell Brewery Charitable Trust, 63 Trevarthian Road, St Austell, PL25 4BY or on [email protected].
