Cellular Respiration
Glycolysis + Anaerobic or Aerobic Processes
Glycolysis
• First step of cellular respiration• Occurs in the cytoplasm [Cytosol]
Net Yield = 2 ATPWhat about the pyruvic acid?
If no oxygen…then Fermentation!
• Lactic Acid Fermentation• Microorganisms (Bacteria) and Muscles• Results in NAD+ for glycolysis…
or
• Alcoholic Fermentation• Some plant cells & unicellular organisms (yeast)
Glycolysis + Fermentation:
• Good News = Continued production of ATP• Bad News = Only enough energy
for unicellular and very small multicellular organisms
* What is a more efficient process?
Glycolysis + Aerobic Respiration
• Must add oxygen!
Aerobic Respiration
• Produces nearly 20 times as much ATP as glycolsis alone
• Two Stages: 1. Krebs Cycle2. Electron Transport Chain (w/ chemiosmosis)
Krebs Cycle (Citric Acid Cycle)
• Two “turns” breaks down the glucose and yields 2 ATP + CO2 waste
Electron Transport Chain (+ Chemiosmosis) = 34 ATP!
