Japan committed to 15m FCVs by 2030The number of fuel cell vehicles in Japan isexpected to reach 15 million in 2030, equiva-lent to 20% of the nation’s current automobilecount of about 75m. The long-term target wasrevealed by Akihiko Morota of the Agency forNatural Resources & Energy (ANRE), part ofthe Ministry of Economy, Trade & Industry,and reported by the Jiji Press.

The official Japanese fuel cell scenario com-prises three phases. The introductory Phase 1(2005–2010) will accelerate the launch andgradual establishment of the fuel supply sys-tem, and the leadership of public services andthe fuel cell industry in promoting FCVs andbuses, leading to 50 000 FCVs and 2200 MWeof stationary fuel cell capacity.

The diffusion stage, Phase 2 (2010–2020),will see the wider establishment of the fuel sup-ply system and self-sustained market growth, intandem with the private sector’s promotion ofthe new technologies. By 2020 there will be 5mFCVs and 10 GWe of stationary systems.

Phase 3 is the penetration stage, between2020 and 2030, which will see a hydrogen sup-ply infrastructure across the country with 15mFCVs served by 8500 filling stations, and gen-uinely commercialized and practical com-bined-cycle fuel cells contributing to 12.5GWe of installed stationary fuel cell systems.

Hydrogenics to build hydrogen generatorfor ChevronTexacoToronto-based Hydrogenics has been contract-ed by ChevronTexaco Technology Ventures(CTTV) to design and build a hydrogen ener-gy station for stationary power generation andtransportation fuel applications. Hydrogenicsis providing engineering and product-relatedservices to integrate a fully packaged hydrogengenerator based on CTTV’s proprietaryreformer technology.

The contract is the first under a master ser-vices agreement recently signed between thetwo companies. The CTTV project is fundedby the US Department of Energy.

Hitachi Cable produces titanium DMFCelectrodeTokyo-based Hitachi Cable Ltd has developedwhat it claims is the world’s first titanium elec-trode material for direct methanol fuel cells.The company says that using titanium insteadof graphite for DMFC electrodes could allowthem to be reduced to around half the size,and manufactured for only 1–2% of the cost.

The company is working with researchers at parent company Hitachi Ltd to prototype a20 We cell, around the size of a business-cardholder, that can power a notebook computer.The goal is to have a practical version of thefuel cell ready in fiscal 2005, according to areport in the Nihon Keizai Shimbun.

The logistics subsidiary of Wal-MartStores is to participate in the next

set of field trials designed to test BC-based Cellex Power’s fuel cell productsfor powering electric forklift trucks.The field trials are set to begin laterthis year at an unspecified Wal-MartDistribution Center.

Cellex is developing fuel cell power solutionsfor electric forklift truck fleets, and recentlyreceived C$2m (US$1.5m) in funding fromSustainable Development Technology Canadatowards its Class 3 forklift project [FCB, June].

Cellex’s power units are designed to replacethe lead-acid batteries and charger systems usedin forklifts, for longer runtimes and faster refuel-ing than batteries, and no harmful emissions.

The company has been conducting field trialssince February 2002, successfully completing itsthird set late last year [FCB, January], and haslogged hundreds of truck days.

Spanish research onmicro fuel cells forportable electronics

Researchers at the independentCIDETEC Center for Electrochemical

Technologies in northern Spain areworking on a project to assess fuel celltechnology for very small-scale applica-tions in the 1–10 We power range,such as cell phones or PDA chargers, orfor remote signalling etc.

Several technology themes are being developedin order to obtain the institute’s own micro fuelcell technology, including the design andenhancement of MEAs, structural elements (cur-rent collectors, shutoff devices), and electronicsfor current enhancement (including the use ofultracapacitors to boost peak power output).

This work is currently following two lines ofinvestigation, depending on which fuel is used.The first uses hydrogen stored in a small metalhydride cartridge for mini fuel cells, while thecurrent focus is on the use of direct methanol

fuel cells. To date it has been possible to assem-ble and test a 1.5 We hydrogen mini fuel cellprototype which, combined with ultracapacitors,has been able to power a cell phone and enablecalls to be made and received.

Apart from the use of methanol, other linesof investigation under way are the perfecting ofa design of a new mini fuel cell (for which apatent application has been made), and the useof new thin-layer MEAs which will providegreater yields with a significant reduction in theuse of noble metals as electrocatalysts, and thusreduce the cost of the cell.

This project is being directly funded byCEGASA, a leading Spanish manufacturer anddistributor of alkaline batteries.

Quantum delivers refueling system to GM

California-based Quantum Technol-ogies has delivered a mobile 700

bar (10 000 psi) hydrogen refuelingsystem to General Motors. This trans-portable unit will be used to refuel the automaker’s fuel cell vehicles inWashington, DC which are equippedwith Quantum’s 700 bar hydrogen fuel systems.

Quantum has developed and launched aline of portable 350 (5000 psi) and 700 barhydrogen refueling systems, aimed at sup-porting the introduction of FCVs and help-ing to establish the early foundation of ahydrogen refueling infrastructure. The unitsare also designed with a ‘defueling’ capability,which facilitates vehicle service operations.Targeting fleets from just one to as many as 20 vehicles, the units are designed to beuser-friendly, and incorporate multipleredundant safety mechanisms and fuelingcontrols compatible with California Fuel CellPartnership hydrogen refueling protocols.They are certified for use by the German regulatory agency, TÜV.

In addition to refueling infrastructure appli-cations, Quantum manufactures componentsand end products for the transportation andstationary fuel cell power generation sectors.
