WELCOMEWelcome to our Brochure and Product Guide.Along with our usual extensive range of species, we are pleased to include some new ‘alternative conifer species’ with a view to the demand for them to mitigate against our changing climate. We also now offer Improved and Selected seed sources of many species, with a view to their use for timber production. The increasing disease pressure affecting our forests in the UK sees some species falling out of favour, notably Larch. With Scots pine being a new victim of Red Band Needle Blight (DNB), much discussion revolves around how to deal with the iconic Scots Pine going forward. In an uncertain market nurseries are no longer carrying surplus stock and shortages are becoming the norm in certain species. With many forward thinking foresters now planning and ordering ahead, the above issues being in mind and with shortages of nursery stock in the UK, we are seeing a strong demand for contract growing. Not least this ensures you receive the quality stock you expect from a UK nursery. Please don’t hesitate to contact us to discuss the many benefits this service offers.Whilst all of our information is online and available at a touch of a button, we would be delighted to have the opportunity to talk to you in person or on the phone, to discuss your requirements. Please feel free to get in touch and we look forward to being able to assist you.

Specialist Cell Grown Plant Producers

Cell Grown Plants offer so many advantages……….PLANTING SEASONCells can be planted over a much extended planting season - almost all year round in some situations. This provides flexibility, convenience and more effective establishment in warmer soils and better weather outside of the traditional planting season.

ROOT SYSTEMThe roots are contained and protected by compost so the young fibrous roots suffer no drying out or damage. The whole intact fibrous root system is easily planted due to the uniform & tidy shape of the cell.

STORAGECells can be easily stored outside and in the open prior to planting, and do not require labour intensive heeling in or expensive cold-storage.

EASY HANDLING AND PLANTINGTheir shelf life means no huge rush to plant, and their easily planted root system gives better chance of successful and proper installation into the ground. These features enable inexperienced planters and volunteers to plant successfully.

SURVIVAL RATEAs the root system of cell grown stock is intact this ensures a high level of successful establishment and virtually eliminates the need of costly beating up.

COSTCells can initially be a few pence more to buy than bareroot stock, for certain species. The cost saved by eliminating beating up however is substantial and far outweighs the initial extra pennies in the long run.

PROVENANCEA wider range of local provenance and UK seed sources is often available from Cell Grown nurseries.

The roots of Cell Grown stock are intact, and a full fibrous root system is planted, allowing successful establishment and good survival.

The root system of bare root stock can be damaged during lifting and handling. They can dry out leading to reduced survival when planted.

Multifunctional Forestry

Choose Seed Source to Meet Planting Objectives

Forestry is not just about timber, or conservation, or firewood. Planting the right tree in the right place for the right reasons can create a true multifunctional forestry ecosystem. This provides more benefits than we expect:• Provisioning services: providing income / subsistence benefits e.g. from production of timber, woodfuel and non-timber forest

products such as seed and fruit.• Regulating services: influencing natural processes e.g. increasing rate of carbon sequestration, reducing flood severity, visual and

noise screening and soil erosion rates.• Cultural services: non-material benefits for people, e.g. significant general wellbeing, health and social benefits are gained from

recreational and reflective time spent in forests.• Supporting services: the basic functions which keep the forest ecosystem growing and enable it to flourish e.g. photosynthesis, soil

formation, nutrient and water cycling.

Customers can achieve the highest potential from their investments by sourcing the right trees from expert suppliers. Cheviot Trees have a long and proven history as innovators and market leaders in the production of Cell Grown trees. We use our experience to provide the very best tree for every planting project.

SOURCE IDENTIFIED (SI) seed is collected from trees that are well adapted to their local area or ‘provenance’. SI trees are suitable for use in woodland creation and conservation projects. We supply a wide variety of local provenance stock from across the UK.

SELECTED (SE) seed is collected from selected stand of trees that have been registered by the Forestry Commission. Trees in selected stands are higher quality, showing superior characteristics (e.g. vigour, form, health). They may have been grown from seed sourced elsewhere, but are well adapted to their local provenance. We currently supply selected stock sourced from stands across the UK and Europe. This stock is suitable for productive planting, especially suitable where timber yield is a factor but also valuable in conservation work when locally sourced selected stock is planted.

QUALIFIED/TESTED (QU)/(TE) seed is collected from a seed orchard. A collection of trees either selected or bred to show measurable improvements in certain characteristics (e.g. vigour, form, health, timber quality) are planted together in an orchard, pollinating each other to produce ‘improved’ tree seed. This seed is categorised as tested when the benefits over unimproved stock have been measured, and categorised as qualified during the development period before the benefits have been measured. We supply improved varieties of many conifers and British hardwoods; particularly suitable for planting projects where timber yield is the primary objective.

PRODUCT FOCUSPopulus tremula (Aspen) SCOTTISH PROVENANCE

Aspen hosts a remarkably diverse range of flora & fauna within the UK, however seed production of Aspen rarely occurs in Scotland. As part of our innovative approach we have invested in micro propagation techniques in an effort to supply reliable and genuine Scottish provenance stock.Limited quantities may be available from stock and contract growing is advisable.

NEWRobinia pseudoacacia (False Acacia)

In response to rising demand for woody biomass material we have recently introduced the False Acacia into our range. It has a rapid rate of growth, excellent drought tolerance properties and the ability to fix nitrogen. The timber also has a naturally high level of durability. Available on a contract grow basis - contact us to discuss further.

Misc Willow Products

Green Barrier™ Screening

We grow large amounts of willow on our sustainably managed plantations in the Scottish Borders. The willow that we produce is well recognised as an attractive & natural material with strong green credentials. Whilst the end uses of Cheviot Trees willow is almost endless, we do specialise in producing material for ‘bio-engineering’ river erosion works and also for creative structure projects.

WILLOW EROSION PRODUCTSBy utilising our willow products and ‘bio-engineering’ techniques, riverbank erosion repairs can be undertaken leaving a natural appearance which blends into the surroundings and becomes almost invisible. Such methods are very much in line with the current strategies of the agri-environment schemes and the policies of environmental organisations such as SEPA and Natural England.

CREATIVE WILLOW STRUCTURE PRODUCTSOur willow sculpture kits are highly attractive and can be used for a multitude of uses including children play areas/classrooms, visual screening & habitat creation. For more information on these products visit our website our contact our sales team.

Netting Range

SHELTERGUARD• The Tubex Shelterguard material is manufactured by laminating a 12mm square netting with a

thin, translucent film lining. When the material is formed into a shelter it provides benefits such as herbicide protection and the enhanced microclimate offered by a solid shelter which are desirable in the early years. After a controlled period of time the film layers degrade, allowing the tree/shrub to acclimatise from a greenhouse type environment to an open and natural environment.

• The Tubex Shelterguard material is often the preferred choice for visually sensitive sites due to the products ability to merge ‘quietly’ into the background.

• Features & benefits include ɤ Intermittent stitched weld down the length of the shelter, designed to allow water to drain

out. ɤ Pre-fitted releasable ties for quick installation and maintenance. ɤ Moulded top lip for treeguards and thick top edge for shrubguards to help minimise wind

abrasion as the plant exits the shelter.• Specification:

TREEGUARD• The Tubex Treeguard material is manufactured in the same way as Shelterguard but has no film

bonded to the inside – it’s just a pure net. If you are planting conifers, or any species that requires plenty of air movement around the plant then the Treeguard is the ideal protection option.

• The Tubex Treeguard material is often the preferred choice for visually sensitive sites due to the products ability to merge ‘quietly’ into the background.

ɤ Intermittent stitched weld down the length of the shelter, designed to allow water to drain out.

CONTROLLED RELEASE FERTILISEROur controlled release fertiliser can assist as an aid to successful establishment, especially on poor soils. The specific mix contains all the essential nutrients required by the plant and the specially formulated coating ensures that the nutrient is released gradually over at least 1 growing season. The composition is 11 : 22 : 9 (6MgO) + Trace elements. The phosphorus and potassium will help rooting and thus establishment. The nitrogen and potassium / magnesium balance will enable strong growth during summer, and the potassium and trace element content will help enable sufficient hardening off in autumn. The fertiliser is packed in convenient 1kg packs (adequate for 100 trees). A small pinch of fertiliser (around 10g) is required per tree and this can be applied into the planting hole by the planter.
