Eagle Scout AwardRROOCCKKWWEELLLL – Chadd

Michael Blanchard, amember of Mason City BoyScout Troop 401, Win-nebago Council 173, earnedthe rank of Eagle ScoutDec. 13, 2011. This is thehighest rank attainable inthe Boy Scouts of America.

A ceremony in honor ofBlanchard’s achievementwas held Sunday, April 15,2012. Many friends andfamily attended to con-gratulate him on hisaccomplishment.

Blanchard began CubScouting with Pack 24 ofSheffield, in 2005, andearned his Arrow of Lightin 2009, Cub Scouts high-est earnable rank. In 2011he transferred to Boy ScoutTroop 1401, where heearned his Eagle Rank. Heis currently serving as ajunior assistant scoutmas-ter for his troop.

On his way to becomingan Eagle Scout, Blanchardearned the rank of firstclass, within his first year.His life project was thetotal reorganization andbuilding of two woodenhandled carriers to houseall the troop’s merit badgebooks. He is a Brotherhoodmember of the Sac-N-FoxLodge 108, and Order ofthe Arrow, scouting’sNational Honor Society.

Over the past sevenyears Blanchard hasenjoyed many activities,adventures and campouts.He earned a total of 48merit badges and is work-ing on his Eagle Palms.Blanchard completed 76nights of camping, earninghim the National Badge forCamping, with on GoldDevice, also earned. Hehas also earned andreceived his Red FlannelCamper Badge, God andFamily Award, and ZeroHero Camping Badge, forcold weather camping.While getting his Zero

Hero, temperaturesreached minus 28 degreeswhile sleeping outdoors for24 hours. Blanchard hascompleted three years ofSnowy Owl and three yearsof Klondike Derby, servingas staff on both in 2012. In2010, Blanchard attendedthe National Scout Jam-boree at Fort A.P. Hill, Va.

In 2011, Blanchardattended the Northern Tiercold weather campingcalled Okpik, and later thatyear attended a youthleader training conferencein the Big Horn Mountainsof Wyoming, called EagleClaw, where he earned hisLeave No Trace OutdoorEthics Trainer Badge. In2012, Blanchard will beattending the National SeaBase in the Florida Keys,and will return to the BigHorns for another EagleClaw. In 2013, he will beattending the NationalScout Jamboree at the firstever Bechtel Summit inWest Virginia.

Blanchard’s Eagle pro-ject was completed in

October, 2011. His projectinvolved completelyrebuilding the playgroundat his church, the UnitedMethodist Church inRockwell. He also addednew landscape timber andnew woodchips, and twonew sitting benches — onefor small children and onefor adults.

Blanchard is 14-years-old and will complete his8th-grade year this May.He is the son of Brent andTheresa Blanchard, ofRockwell, and grandson ofJim and Kathy Blanchard ofRockport, Texas; Bruce andJerriann Ries of Rockwell,and Noma Chadd, of Call-away, Neb.

The title of “EagleScout” is held for life, thusgiving rise to the phrase,“Once an Eagle, always anEagle.” But not without aspecial thanks to my par-ents, Ed DePaepe, andChuck Hogg. None of thiswould be possible withoutall of their help. “ThankYou.” May the journeycontinue and be long.

AALLGGOONNAA — Ensemblesfrom the Algona HighSchool Music Departmentattended the State LargeGroup Festival May 4, inHumboldt.

The Concert Choir andConcert Band were award-ed a Division I rating, andthe Mixed Chorus wasawarded a Division III rat-ing.

Teams of three adjudica-tors provided by the IowaHigh School Music Associ-ation evaluated the threeAHS ensembles’ perfor-mances. They rated theensembles on the followingcriteria: tone quality, into-nation, rhythm, balanceand blend, technique,interpretation and musi-cianship, diction/articula-tion and appropriate litera-ture. The independentevaluation aspect of theState Large Group MusicFestival is the major ele-ment that Iowa high schoolbands and choirs use todetermine the quality oftheir music ensembles’performance level.

State Large GroupMusic Competition

AALLGGOONNAA — The BishopGarrigan Concert Bandand A Cappella Choir par-ticipted in the State LargeGroup Music Competition,May 5.

Both ensembles wereawarded a Division I ratingby a panel of three judges.The concert band waspraised for its strength oftone quality and overallsound. The A CappellaChoir was praised for itstone color, balance andmusicianship.

The band is under thedirection of Ken Ferjak andthe choir is under thedirection of Linda Ferjak.
