First Day 19th

January, 2015

Seminar on Entrepreneurship development in Inland fisheries

Gujarat state has the highest marine catch in India but poor in fresh water fish

production. South Gujarat is bestowed with many fresh water resources of varied nature,

tropical climate and large number of human resources including large number of fish eaters in

Gujarat. Navsari District also has about more than 600 village tanks. But most of the

resources are remained unutilized for fish culture activities. Very few are being used for fish

farming with low yield. Thus looking the resource availability and public interest there is a

huge potential for the development of fisheries enterprise. In this context, the organization of

the seminar on ‘Entrepreneurship Development in Inland fisheries’ will provide an

opportunity to the participants to empower themselves and will pave the way to start fisheries

enterprise with more accuracy and scientific approach.

The programme was started with the welcome address and speech by Dr.

C.K.Timbadia, Programme coordinator, KVK, Navsari. He also explained the different

activities done by KVK, Navsari in the District. Dr.A. N. Sabalapara, Director of Research,

remarkable presidential speech on the available fisheries resource and scope for the

development. He also emphasized over fisheries education and role and sincere efforts of

NAU to start Fisheries Science college will trigger the Fisheries activities with more

intensity. On this occasion a Gujarati training manual cum book let on ‘ Entrepreneurship

Development in Inland Fisheries’ written by Mr. P. P. Patel, Dr. R. V. Borichangar and Dr.

C. K. Timbadia has been released. Dr. R. V Borichangar, Associate professor, Soil and water

Management unit, NAU, Navsari delivered lecture with power point presentation on ‘ Fish

farming in village tanks, Integrated fish farming and empowerment of women through value

addition in Fresh water fish’. Moreover Prof. P. P. Patel, SMS (Fisheries) delivered lectures

Second Day- 20th

January, 2015

Seminar on Fruits and vegetables preservation

India is next to Brazil in fruits and next to China in vegetables production. Fruits

and vegetables are highly perishable in nature so there is an about 35 to 40% loss due to

deterioration. Therefore, we should preserve them for storage. Fruits and vegetables are

protective foods. As per scientific recommendation everyone should consume 85 gm of fruits

per day. By preserving the fruits and vegetables and their products we can enjoy them in off

season. Moreover it can create employment opportunities in the country.

Due to adoption of high tech horticulture approach in India the production of

fruits and vegetables is increasing. Establishment of large number of processing and

preservation unit for fruits and vegetables avoid excess stock in market which in turn fetches

enough value to farmers and people can and enjoy in off season also. Different value added

bi-products can be prepared from fruits and vegetables. The total estimated annual production

is more than 70 million tones. Due to inadequate facilities for processing nearly 35 to 40%

produce of the total production is wasted amounting to Rs. 3000 crores annually.

The importance of fruits and vegetables are well known by the Indians as fruits

and vegetables are rich source of Vitamins and minerals. Storage of food material in perfect

consumable condition for a longer time without undergoing any spoilage is an urgent need of

the era. There is heavy glut of fruits and vegetables in the market during the season and large

quantity of its get spoiled due to lack of storage facilities. Climatic diversification an

important component for production in huge quantity of various fruits and vegetables in

India. However, fruits and vegetables are cheap in the season and wasted due to spoilage at

greater extent. Therefore, to avoid the spoilage processing units are to be installed. It has been

reported by AIPEDA ( Agril and Product Export and Development Authority) that the import

of fruits has been growing 37% annually. Considerable losses also occur due to improper

handling transportation and lack of processing and preservation units. By using various

methods shelf –life of fruits and vegetables can be extended and used as material for

processing units. Thus this seminar will be the small step to create awareness among farmers

for proper handling and preservation of such valuable gift of God.

Dr.C.K.Timbadia, Programme Co-ordinator welcomed all dignitaries and briefed

all the activities related women empowerment and value addition in fruits and vegetables

conducted by KVK, Navsari. Dr. M.K.Aarvadia, Principal & Dean of N.M.college of

Seminars on Integrated weed management in field crops.

Third Day- 21st January 2014

There are four main factors responsible for loss in crop production viz, insect,

disease, weeds and rats. About 26.3% loss in crop production occurs due to diseases, 9.6%

reduction by insect, 13.8% by rats and remarkably higher reduction about 33.8% by weeds.

Due to weed infestation only about 10 to 100% reduction in production was found in

different crops. Those plants that interfere with human activity in crop and non-crop are

considered as weeds. Total more than 250 plants act as weeds. Weeds compete with crops

for soil nutrients, water and light; the host insects and plant pathogens harmful to crop plants.

Weeds also hinder crop harvest and increase the costs of production. It is difficult to control

weed by any single methods. Therefore it is very important to follow integrated approaches to

control the weeds. Looking to current era need a one day seminar on integrated weed

management in field crops was arranged at KVK, Navsari.

KVK, Navsari staff cardinally invited all dignitaries, scientist and farmers those

are exited and interested for the seminar. Dr. C. K. Timbadia, Programme co-ordinator

delivered welcomes speech and threw light over the extension activities being conducted by

the centre. Dr. G. G. Radadia, Registrar, Navsari Agricultural University, Navsari presided

over and delivered an excellent speech on importance and methods of weed management

citing their personal experience of the research. Dr. Mali, Research Scientist, Sugarcane

Research station, NAU, Navsari expressed detailed methods and scientific approach of weed

management. He also added early precautions measures to be taken by farmers for effective

weed management. Moreover Sarpach of nearby villages those are interested for the activities

remained present and presented and shared their experiences. Dr. K. A. Shah, SMS

(Agronomy), KVK, Navsari delivered scientific lectures over weed management and its

importance for increasing agriculture produces. Many interested farmers presented their

doubts, quarries to the scientist on various weeds and their methods to be controlled. More

than 90 farmers were benefitted and actively participated.

Fourth Day- 22nd

January, 2015

Seminar on Scientific management of cross bred cows

In Gujarat, dairy farming is providing subsistence to millions of small, marginal

landless farmers. Navsari district has highest population of crossbred animal in the south

Gujarat. Such animal are mainly reared through the utilization of crop residues and some

extent of concentrates. It is known fact that bulk of milk production is handled by small milk

producers who are uneducated and unaware of economic aspects of milk production. They

are maintaining their animals in traditional way and so they are not getting more profit in

dairy farming. Hence it was felt that there is an urgent need to sensitize the dairy farmers

about the scientific technologies and various interventions required in dairy production, in

order to enhance milk production and to obtain good quality animals at door step. Keeping in

view the above situation, today’s theme was the scientific management of crossbred cows.

Dr. C. K. Timbadia, Programme co-ordinator welcomed all dignitaries, scientists

and farmers and briefed about the activities being conducted for Animal health and milk

production. Active social worker and NRI respected Shri Dahyabhai Patel remained present

as a chief guest and expressed his best wishes for success to livestock owners. Breeding is the

most important aspect in animal husbandry. It helps to obtain good quality animals at the

door step and also helpful to improve milk production of the animals. Livestock owners have

least knowledge about breeding and genetic parameters of the animals. Dr.V.B. Kharadi

,Research scientist, Livestock Research Station, NAU, Navsari has delivered his technical

lecture on breeding management of crossbred cows quoting his vast personal experiences.

Crossbred animals are more susceptible to various animal diseases as compared to

native breeds of animals. So there is higher cost in the treatment of the animals which reduce

the profit margin in dairy farming. They don’t regularly deworm their animals and some of

the farmers don’t vaccinate their animals regularly. Dr V.S. Dabas, Professor, veterinary

college, Navsari has vast experience in the line of treatment especially he has experience of

some homemade treatments. He shared his technical knowledge and experience to the

livestock farmers. He clearly taught the farmers how to keep their animals disease free at low

cost of treatment and improve the profit in dairy farming.

Moreover Dr. M. A. Katariya, SMS(Animal sci.), KVK, Navsari has delivered his

speech over feeding management of cows during dry, pregnant and lactation stage. Livestock

owner don’t have enough knowledge about the feeding of dry cows, feeding allowance in the

late pregnancy stage and lactation stage, feed supplements and its use in ration also. During

the seminar many livestock owners had expressed their gratitude to Dr. Dabas sir for

successful surgery and treatment of their valuable live assets.

Thus more than 100 women engaged with dairy farming activities participated and

reaped the benefits of the day.

Fifth Day- 23rd

January, 2015

A Seminar on High density plantation in fruits and vegetables

High density means to increase the plant population per unit area for increasing

the production of fruit crops. Advancing knowledge in litchi tree architecture, growth

physiology, and possibility of using growth retardants has enabled farmers to adopt closer

planting and maintaining reachable canopy. This system is popularly known as the High

Density Planting (HDP). It enables profitable cropping, high regular yields and improved

farm management practices, leading to higher productivity. Today new orchards of mangoes

are being attempted to plant in this system with a view to produce higher fruit yield and

increased profitably. Use of growth retardants which restricts tree growth and encourages

early flower induction, have also been found helpful for these high-density planting systems.

High density planting technique is a modern method in litchi cultivation also involving

planting of litchi trees densely, allowing small or dwarf trees with modified canopy for better

light interception and distribution and ease of mechanized field operations. Control of pests

and diseases, weeds and pruning of tree canopy can be carried out by machine. Irrigation and

fertigation are automatically controlled. Such system produces precocious cropping, high and

regular yields of good quality fruits and low labor requirement to meet ever rising production

costs. It is the best way of efficient utilization of land resources with increase in yield per unit

area. It enhances quality production of fruits and vegetables. It is easy for interculturing

operation, plant protection and harvesting. It also fetches export quality of the harvest.

However there are some disadvantages which are less life span of the fruit, difficult to

manage the canopy, require tree high techniques for the maintained of fruit trees.

Increasing pressure on land owing to diversion of orchard lands to various other

obvious reasons as well as rising energy and land-costs, together with mounting demand for

fruits have made it imperative to achieve higher productivity from limited space. One should

be very conscious in case of high density because closer spacing may bring negative impact

in growers’ fields if the complete package of high density has not been properly understood

and followed. So KVK Navsari took initiative to encourage high density plantation of

vegetable fruits in south Gujarat. A one day seminar has been arranged during technical week

celebration.

Dr. C. K. Timbadia welcomed all degnitaries, scientists and farmers and stated the

year round activities being conducted by KVK for the development of farming society. Dr. C.

J. Dangaria, Hon’ble Vice chancellor, NAU, Navsari presided over and awaked the farmers

about an important of horticulture cropping system of South Gujarat. He also briefed the

potential for horticulture development in South Gujarat implementing recent agricultural

advancements. Moreover Mr. Kadam, Asstt. General Manager, NABARD also emphasized

over horticulture plantation using latest advantageous components of high density plantation.

Looking to the keen interest of the farmers and KVK he encouraged farmers to come forward

with high tech agriculture/horticulture projects to get maximum funding from NABARD.

Moreover he briefed various Govt. schemes for horticulture development. Dr. Sagar Patil,

Associate Research Scientist, Dept. of Horticulture delivered detailed about high density

plantation methods in fruits crops and standard protocol for high density plantation of various

fruits crops. Lady official from NABARD presented detailed about Solar equipments being

used in Agriculture. Dr. B. M. Tandel delivered lectures on high density plantation in

vegetables crops showing various methods of plantation. More than 100 farmers attended the

seminar and rectified their doubts and questions. At last they visited demonstration unit of

Seminar on use of bio insecticides and fungicides in agriculture

Preamble

Crop production and crop protection are the two major pillars in the filed of

agriculture. Not only production of crop but also protection is most essential. Annually there

are tones of crop losses due to pests and disease attack. To overcome this menace most of the

farmers are using chemical pesticides. This result many problems like elimination of natural

enemy, pesticide residue in food crops, environment contamination, soil degradation due to

pesticide deposition and ground/ surface water contamination, resulting poor health of human

beings. Without the environment human can’t survive therefore there is an urgent need of

protecting the nature there by we can see healthy generation in upcoming years. With this
