FROM THE HEADMASTER

What a 60th year! Our “normal” way of life, including the traditional end-of-year Celebration of Achievement, has been disrupted beyond comprehension. We often heard (and then dismissed the warnings) that a pandemic would be the greatest threat to society, but here we are at the end of nearly 12 months of such a global event.

The question to consider is, “have the students thrived during our 60th year?”

In 1888, German philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche wrote “Aus der Kriegsschule des Lebens - Was mich nicht umbringt, macht mich stärker,” which can be translated as

“Out of life’s school of war - what doesn’t kill me, makes me stronger.” A broad statement and perhaps a little crass for the current times, but nonetheless there is truth to be found in those words: we only develop resilience when faced with adversity, and it is resilience that enables us to thrive.

What this year has done, more than any year following the Second World War, is to show us that there is more to life than materialism, wealth, status or achievements. The events of this year have caused us to refocus our lives and value what we previously took for granted: our health, family, relationships, our surroundings; small blessings that we often overlook.

The year has brought a strong message for education and schools. The events have highlighted that an education worth having is not one that is solely focused on grades and marks, but one that teaches resilience and character, that values community and instils a strong sense of moral purpose. An education worth having is a holistic one, but we knew that already. This is what St Paul’s School seeks to provide when it says we prepare resilient global citizens, who are innovative thinkers with a heart for servant leadership.

I would argue that our students, your children, have learnt more this year than any other year prior. They have realised how much they value their family, their friends, and their School. They have developed greater self-discipline, independent learning skills and organisation. They have found ways to keep on top of their studies while away from the classroom. They have bounced back from the many disappointments the year has caused: isolation, cancelled overseas tours, disruptions to sport and cancelled or modified events. Our students, your children, have had the opportunity to become stronger for the experiences we have had this year.

“I learned about the importance of the smaller things, such as going for walks and embracing the little things in life that we normally take for granted.”

While we could not gather in person for the 2020 Celebration of Achievement, we innovated on that traditional event, as we did for many other events throughout our 60th year. We have still marked and celebrated the remarkable achievements of our young people, albeit in a different way, but in a way that records what has been a year in history that few will forget in a hurry.

Congratulations to the award winners for 2020, but congratulations to you all. We have done more than survive, we could claim that we have thrived. We look with hope to 2021, taking with us the experiences that have further shaped our individual characters and community on our journeys of becoming.

Outstanding Commitment to Innovative & Entrepreneurial ThinkingA student/s who are committed to continually pushing their thinking when it comes to opportunity seeking, creativity, enterprising skills, and solving real world problems and challenges.

Outstanding Contribution to Extra-Curricular ActivitiesAwarded to a student who has made a significant contribution to their chosen club/activity through attendance, participation, mateship or leadership.

Outstanding Creative & Entrepreneurial DLV TeamAwarded to a Design Led Venture team that has excelled in their creative thinking, challenged themselves and others, and grown effectively as a team to present an outstanding solution to their client. They have also demonstrated exceptional entrepreneurial thinking and presented an effective and usable implementation plan to the client.

Petrie Shield (Academic, Citizenship & Sport) The Petrie Shield is awarded to a student who has approached a field of study or an extracurricular activity with passion and dedication donated by Luke Howarth MP

Prize for Captains The recipients are the School Captains who have role-modelled Global Citizenship, demonstrating significant Servant Leadership abilities and displayed excellent School Spirit.

Religion and Values Award A role model Global Citizen who emulates elements of Christian living, articulates Christian understanding via action, activity and behaviour and has a connection with and understanding of the philosophical understanding of the Anglican Faith.

School Spirit Award (Year 10)A Year 10 student (Global Citizenship Blue or Silver Award) who has been an outstanding Global Citizen demonstrated by a high level of extra-curricular participation; support of peers; displays diligence in applying themselves to academic studies; enhancement of the School’s reputation in the Community and, as a servant leader, shown exemplary support for the School’s Code of Conduct.

School Spirit Award (Year 12)A Year 12 girl who has, over their Senior Years, displayed and exemplifies the following traits of a Global Citizen: persistence, humility, courage, resilience, strong ethics, Anglican faith.

Service to the Chapel Award A student (Global Citizenship Silver or Gold Award) who has displayed outstanding Global Citizenship through consistent dedication to Chapel life including altar serving, training, and servant leadership.

Sport Award A player must meet most, but not necessarily all of the following: Ambassadorship for the School and the sport. A clear commitment to the team. A commitment to fair and decent play. A personal commitment to training and individual skill development. Appropriate behaviour. Outstanding levels of sportsmanship. Respect for fellow team members, officials and the opposition. Exceeded to a standard that would ordinarily be above him/her. Attendance, attitude and dedication to training, the team and the game.

The Andrew Clark Memorial Prize for Service A Year 10 student (Global Citizenship Blue or Silver Award) who has been an outstanding Global Citizen demonstrated by a high level of extra-curricular participation; support of peers; displays diligence in applying themselves to academic studies; enhancement of the School’s reputation in the Community and, as a servant leader, shown exemplary support for the School’s Code of Conduct.

The Eco-Awareness Prize The recipient of this award embraces the notion of ‘global environmental sustainability’ and will be awarded to a Middle Years or Senior School student who demonstrates commitment to service and actions in the principles of global environmental and sustainable development.

The George Walter Brown Memorial Prize for Service A Year 12 student (Global Citizenship Silver or Gold Award) who has displayed outstanding qualities of Global Citizenship with a special focus on service and servant leadership.

The Hartley Award for Sporting EndeavourFor a boy (Global Citizenship Silver or Gold Award) displaying outstanding Global Citizenship, with a special focus on attitude, commitment, role modelling to other students, doing their best at all times; not necessarily the most talented.

The John K Stehbens Award for MusicianshipAwarded to a student in the MYS who demonstrates the greatest musical potential through endeavour (not necessarily the best musician).

The Karen Krebs Prize for School Spirit A Year 8 boy and girl (Global Citizenship Blue Award) who has been an outstanding Global Citizen, demonstrated by a high level of extra-curricular participation; support of peers; displays diligence in applying themselves to academic studies; enhancement of the School’s reputation in the Community and, as a servant leader, shown exemplary support for the School’s Code of Conduct.

The Robinson Award for Sporting EndeavourFor a girl (Global Citizenship Silver or Gold Award) displaying outstanding Global Citizenship, with a special focus on attitude, commitment, role modelling to other students, doing their best at all times; not necessarily the most talented.

The Rotary Club of Pine Rivers Citizenship AwardA Year 12 student (Global Citizenship Silver or Gold Award) who has displayed the attributes of a good Global Citizen with the focus on servant leadership in the local and wider community.

The Rotary Club of Pine Rivers Year 11 Award for ChemistryThe best A level student based on results up to the end of Term 3. Ultimately, any critical decision regarding this must be determined by the Curriculum Leader’s evaluation of folios of assessment tasks.

The Van Twist Family Award for Christian Education Awarded to a student in the Middle Years of Schooling who is a role-model Global Citizen who emulates elements of Christian living, articulates a Christian understanding via action, activity and behaviour and has a connection with and understanding of the philosophical underpinning of the Anglican Faith.
