UPMC Northwest has been selected as the 2011 Inclusion Champion- Business Unit of the Year. The UPMC Center for Inclusion Champion Award honors individuals and organizations that have made significant efforts to promote inclusion within the workplace or the community.
814 Public Hearing scheduled for August 15th
The Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission has scheduled additional public hearings regarding the 814 area code split, including one in Oil City on Aug. 15. The hearings are designed to gather further input on the effects of both the geographic split and overlay options designed to ensure adequate numbering resources in the 814 area code.
Administrative law judge Katrina L. Dunderdale will conduct the hearing at 6 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 15, at the Arlington Hotel, 1 Seneca St., Oil City. The Venango Chamber held a Business Before Hours in June, to discuss the anticipated impact of a area code change on local businesses. While such a change may not occur for some time, it is certain to add cost and confusion to businesses small and large. Fortunately there are alternative solutions available. Venango County Commissioner Vince Witherup attended a hearing held on this subject, held in Erie. He urges chamber members to attend this local hearing , to gain a better understanding and to voice their opinion on how the PUC should resolve the area code shortage.

Venango Catholic High School "Buy a Blind" Campaign! Be kind, buy a blind! Venango Catholic High School is beginning a fundraising campaign to replace all of the blinds in the school. This is occurring in conjunction with the replacement of the school boiler in an effort to make the school as energy efficient as possible. The owner of The Performing Arts Academy, Darin Paden (age 21), describes his early childhood as one filled with sports. The youngest of three children (all boys), he was always well supported by his parents and siblings in his other sports (baseball, wrestling, cross country running), so his declaration at age 8 that he would like to take tap dancing lessons was quickly responded to by his mother, Belinda. When he began taking lessons however, ballet was required in addition to tap. Furthermore, Darin, never one to sit idly, decided to fill the gap between tap and ballet with jazz lessons.
When Darin was 10 years old, his cousin Lisa LeMier invited him to county swing dance. In no time he was collecting awards: his very first year at the Worlds competition, held in Nashville, TN, Darin and his dance partner took second place, only to return the next year to place first competing against youth couples from all over the world. Having collected more than 7 World Championships, he now teaches ‘partner dancing’ and has several winning students, even some from as far away as Missouri, this is in the Pro-Am division where Darin competes with his students and the students are judged. Darin became the youngest professional ever on the dance circuit at the age of 17.
During his high school years, Darin studied cosmetology at the Venango Technology Center while still dreaming of a professional dance career and performing in New York City. He set off to study jazz and ballet at Point Park University in Pittsburgh, but decided to return to Venango County when offered the opportunity to teach dance for Forestwood Performing Arts in Oil City. Unexpectedly, Darin found a true love of teaching, inspired by the real need from his students. He explains that the nature of dance itself drives a strong work ethic in students.
While teaching for Forestwood, Darin also taught dance at Studio 22 in Franklin. Darin also works as a hair stylist at Mastercuts Salon at the Cranberry Mall utilizing his cosmetology degree from Venango Technology Center.
Earlier this year Darin was presented with the offer to purchase Forestwood Performing Arts, an opportunity he believed was too good to pass up. The studio, now named The Performing Arts Academy with Darin, relocated to the National Transit/Annex building to a space that has been undergoing a makeover. Walls have been moved, a new dance floor, mirrors and bars have been installed and the entire area has been freshly painted. The new studio includes two dance instruction rooms, student and staff lounges, a parent observation area as well as an office.

When asked about his decision to remain in Venango County, versus heading off to a big metropolis such as New York, Darin remarks “Oil City is like a mini version of the larger cities of Pittsburgh or even New York. I love the small businesses, beautiful location and amazing buildings!” The Performing Arts Academy with Darin will hold its first day of class in early September. Classes are available for students 3-103 (or even older)! The Performing Arts Academy is committed to community partnerships, for Darin holds classes at the Child Devel-opment Centers and plans to work close with the Oil City YMCA Gymnastics Competition Team and the Oil Region Ballet Company. Moreover, Darin is interested in estab-lishing business sponsored scholarships for students who would like to take dance lessons but do not have the means to do so. Darin feels without the support of the local community when he was a young dancer he would not be as successful as he is today. He wants to give the local dance students the same opportunities that he had growing up. The Performing Arts Academy offers classes for all ages
MTFC hires a new recruiter Multidimensional Treatment Foster Care (MTFC) of Venango County Children, Youth, and Family Services is proud to announce the hiring of our new foster parent recruiter, Ward Witmer. Ward joins MTFC with a long history of working with youth. MTFC is an Evidence Based solution for youth with emotional and behavioral problems,
their families, and their communities. The goal of Multidimensional Treatment Foster
Care is stabilization and reunification with a parent, relative or other permanent
caregiver. The program focuses on decreasing antisocial behavior and increasing
developmentally appropriate social skills and behaviors, in order to allow the child to
experience success at home, at school and in the community.
In Venango County, MTFC accomplishments include its successful launch of the program on June 15, 2008. The
first client was accepted into the program October 31, 2008 and the first client graduated from the program June
29, 2009. Venango County received certification, indicating that Venango County MTFC is providing the MTFC
model with fidelity, on November 30, 2010. It is one of 23 certified MTFC programs worldwide.
