Helen Nessan-Merriman, Executive Director, [email protected]

Ms. Helen Merriman has served as the founding director of the SD CEO, the only women’s business center in South Dakota, since its opening in November 2009. SD CEO is housed under the School of Business and

Natural Sciences and is located on the campus of Black Hills State University (BHSU) in Spearfish, South Dakota. Participation has grown from 425 participants to over 1400, in 50 counties statewide. She has developed many programs to help women realize their full leadership potential including the annual Celebrating Women in Business Luncheon and Awards, the annual Women’s Business Conference and a monthly Women in Networking event. Helen was instrumental in the creation of the Women in Leadership Focusing on the Future educational curriculum/program funded by Coeur Wharf gold and silver mine and is now in its fourth year with 100 graduates to date. Additionally, she was an invited participant at the 2015 National Security Forum at Maxwell Air Force Base, Alabama and has served as an Honorary Commander for the Ellsworth Air Force Base 28th Contracting Squadron. Helen and SD CEO were awarded the 2013 SBA Region VIII Women’s Business Center of Excellence Award. In 2001, Helen and her husband Roger sold their commercial printing and publishing business in Pierre that they had operated for 24 years. Owning their own business gave her the valuable experience of a “startup business” to the selling of a successful business with 40 employees. She also has experience as a sales manager for two regional publications, as a coordinator of social services for a long-term care facility and in leading both non-profit and for-profit entities. Helen is originally from the Sioux Falls area and earned a bachelor’s degree from Northern State University. She currently

lives in Spearfish with her husband, has two adult step children, six grandchildren, and great grandsons.

Andrea Bakeberg, Assistant Director, [email protected]

Andrea joined SD CEO in May 2015. She is originally from Rapid City, and graduated from Black Hills State University in 2012 with a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration with an emphasis in Marketing. Andrea received her MBA in Applied Management from BHSU in May 2016.

She serves as the secretary for the Zonta Club of Spearfish. Since 2017, Andrea has served on the Board of Directors for the Matthews Opera House. Andrea lives in Spearfish with her husband Aric.

Mela Cosme, Senior Secretary, [email protected]

Mela joined the SD CEO in October of 2016. Mela graduated from Black Hills State University in 2013 with a Bachelor in Corporate Communications and a Bachelor in Mass Communications with an emphasis in Photography and Graphic Design. She volunteers her time as a Girl Scout Troop

Leader where she works with and leads 7th graders to high school girls. Born and raised in Puerto Rico, Mela currently lives in Spearfish and is fond of the local community and the outdoors. In the winter, you may find her at our local ski resort where she is an AASI Level II Certified Snowboard Instructor.

Mission Statement: SD CEO provides training and business assistance to current and prospective entrepreneurs from start up to expansion to foster economic development in South Dakota.

Vision Statement: SD CEO will facilitate opportunities to acquire the knowledge, skills and resources necessary to support, nurture and advocate the development of prosperous businesses.

Jamie Gilcrease-HeupelOwner,

Lotus Up Espresso & Deli95 E Main St #3, Lead, SD, 57754 | 605-722-4670

Jamie Gilcrease-Heupel, was born on March 3, 1983 in Washington State. Jamie is the owner of Lotus Up Espresso & Deli and D&J Holdings in Lead, South Dakota. Jamie is involved in the community; she sits on the boards for The Lead Area Chamber of Commerce, Sanford Lab Homestake Visitor Center, and the Lead Kiwanis. She also serves on the Resource Development Committee for the Lead Area Boys and Girls Club, but how did she get here?

Adopted at age 11, she was a shy girl who knew that she was destined for greatness, some say a natural born leader! She started her journey young, becoming President of P.S.I.A (Parents and Students In Action) at the young age of 13. Jamie was a cheerleader for the Eatonville Cruisers through High school where she found her voice. She followed her heart to Montana after graduation where she met her amazing husband and father of her children. In 2009, she and her family moved to her husband’s hometown of Lead, SD.

After nine years of experience in the coffee world, Jamie intended on opening a coffee kiosk, but her plans quickly shifted gears when the owners approached her one day and asked her if she would be interested in buying the place.

So, in July of 2010 she began her trek to becoming a success story. She acquired the coffee shop and renamed it Lotus Up Espresso & Deli. The name, Lotus Espresso & Deli, was inspired by the lotus flower, which can grow strong and beautiful from murky depths and symbolizes Jamie’s aspirations for Lead as well as well as her own personal hopes and dreams. Through consultation with SD CEO, SBDC, the City of Lead, the Deadwood-Lead Economic Development and other business experts, she created a dream and inspired others to join her. On June 26, 2016, she opened the doors to a multi-level establishment that would be home to her coffee house and three other viable businesses, including Lead’s only Pharmacy. This building is part of her dream to help the community and economic growth of a town that was once lost. She is often found in her place of business dreaming up new ways to help her community and inspiring others to follow their own dreams. Jamie is no stranger to obstacles or hardships, but nothing will stop this young woman in her efforts to help others achieve greatness.
