PRESIDENT'S WELCOME

On behalf of the Board of Directors, it is my honor and privilege to welcome you to the 89th annual Michigan Safety Conference! Over the years, I have always been immensely impressed by the incredible dedication of over 170 volunteers representing 14 different training divisions who assure the MSC provides over 120 quality educational safety programs to attendees. I want to thank all of the great organizations that support

the MSC by encouraging and allowing their staff the opportunity to volunteer for the conference and to advance the cause of workplace safety in Michigan. The MSC also has an amazing exhibit hall with over 240 exhibitors featuring demonstrations and simulations as well as state-of-the-art safety products and services. One of the most valuable features of the MSC is the opportunity to meet, network, and learn from other safety professionals that come from a wide array of industries and safety disciplines in the state. All of this adds up to the fact that the Michigan Safety Conference is one of the premier non-profit safety conferences in the nation!

The theme of the 2019 conference is "Protect Your Employees: Check First." Workplace safety is dependent upon identifying potential hazards and then eliminating those hazards if possible, controlling them through engineering controls if they cannot be completely eliminated, mitigating hazards through establishing process and procedures, and lastly assuring the use of personal protective equipment if the hazard cannot be eliminated or mitigated in any other way. In the world of healthcare, we use the concept of a "Time Out" to assure patient safety, to make sure we stop and “Check First” that the correct patient is having the correct surgery on the correct side, along with confirming other safety parameters and conditions. Any great safety program or well-developed organizational Culture of Safety not only identifies hazards and puts measures in place to address those hazards, but also makes sure the process includes everyone. Everyone must “Check First” to make sure all the safety parameters and measures are still in place and effective. Please, everyone, "Check First" before you start that job and "Check First" before you start that machine and begin that procedure. If we all “Check First”, everyone goes home safe!

Be safe and I am happy you could attend!

— Pierre Gonyon, CHSPPresident, 89th Annual Michigan Safety Conference

2019 MICHIGAN SAFETY CONFERENCE · PROTECT YOUR EMPLOYEES

MICHSAFETYCONFERENCE.ORG

PROTECT YOUR EMPLOYEESPROTECT YOUR EMPLOYEES

This year, the Michigan Safety Conference unveiled a new look for the website: michsafetyconference.org.

The main goal when developing the site was to choose a software platform that would guarantee a safe internet experience for the user and to make things easier to find when visiting the site.

A website map was created to build the site, to help with user flow, based on the following categories of end users:

• Attendees

• Exhibitors

• Sponsors

• Speakers

• Students

• Volunteers

Hopefully you found the new registration functions of the site to be more streamlined, easy to use and current. However, if you notice something on the new website that doesn’t appear to be functioning properly, please send me an email at: [email protected] and let me know.

The conference will continue to look for ways to remain current in the ever-changing world of technology.

Fun Fact: The color of orange that was added to the new site is the exact PMS color of a safety cone!
