Words From Our President

Barry Blecherman

Yes, I work during the summer. No, I don’t teach – but there’s a lot to do at

college that is invisible to students and parents. Many things that need doing

wait until the students are gone – things like dealing with curriculum innova-

tion, hiring new staff and faculty, preparing for the incoming cohort of stu-

dents, reviewing students’ assessments of their education, and meeting with

potential donors and possible employers of our graduates. It is a necessarily

busy time that remains under the radar of our students who are busy with in-

ternships and vacations.

Before I became part of the leadership of Shomrei Torah I thought that sum-

mers at our synagogue were a pretty relaxed time. Congregants are away.

School is out. There aren’t any holidays in the summer except for Tisha

B’Av. I was wrong – summer at shul is a busy time. First, our fiscal year

ends on the last day of June. We need to see if we’ve kept to our budget. As I

am writing this, in mid-July, not everything in our accounting is settled yet,

but I can confidently say that we are likely to close the 2017-2018 books

with expenses and revenues within 1% of each other and probably with a

slight surplus. Second, just like at my job, we need to become ready for a

new school year. Our new Director of Congregational Learning, Matt Nover,

will begin working with us on August 1st. Matt is bringing us new innova-

tions and a new attitude and approach. Our school is on the upswing and we

will keep it moving forward together this summer so that our kids and adults

get some great learning this year and have fun in the process. And Rosh

Hashanah is coming! Soon! I had never appreciated the number of people

involved and the decisions to be made – there’s so much planning going on!

Thank you in advance to everyone helping out with the High Holidays this

summer. If you want to work with us, have some fun, and feel proud of your-

self for doing something important, please feel free to contact me. There’s

always room for more helpers.

I hope that your summer is relaxing and that we see each other again soon,

refreshed and excited to help build community and spirit in our beautifully

renovated synagogue.

B’Shalom,

Barry

So you may know that I’m a professor. And it is

summertime now. People ask me all the time, “Do you

work during the summer?” Sometimes they’ll say,

“Must be great to have the summer off!”

It seems to me as I sit to write this L'chaim article, that it is important at this time to focus on

saying thank you to the wonderful ladies that make our Sisterhood successful.

Let's start off with a HUGE thank you to Marcy Marcus and Sue Gordon. Together they

made a beautiful evening more special with their hard work, coordinating, and gracious hospi-

tality for our annual Pool Party. Thank you so much.

Spa Day was a big success due in part to Marsha Greenberg for making calls to remind us of

this day.

Recipe Dinner was fabulous mainly because of Sue Nagler, Sue Mirsky and Sue Feldman.

Together they worked very hard, making sure that the evening was successful. A special thank

you to Ronnie Brass for volunteering her home for the event.

Our Purim Basket fundraiser went off without a hitch, largely because Judy Krantz took on

this major job once again. Her main helpers, Phyllis Staloff, Sue Feldman, Marcy Marcus

and Sue Gordon were no slouches either. They worked very hard together, shopping, shelp-

ing, sorting, labeling, stuffing and making 300+ baskets.

Maxine Berger once again made sure that Ladies Shabbat was a beautiful service.

Paid up membership couldn't be better. A heartfelt thanks to Sue Gordon, Marlene Klein,

Phyllis Staloff, Marcy Marcus, Carol Willner, Carol Ramer, Judy Krantz, Sue Feldman,

Suzanne and our Gloria. These wonderful women made this evening a huge success.

And of course, our scrip ladies (aka bag ladies) . . . Marcy Marcus, Phyllis Staloff and Roby

Weiner. Thank you for bringing and selling scrip wherever you go.

Our gift shop is chaired by our wonderful shopkeeper, Lee Ann Beck. Lee Ann is always mak-

ing sure that we are fully stocked with the latest and the greatest.

I want to take this opportunity to thank these women and all those who I inadvertently left out.

There are too many to name but enough that I can look around whatever room I am in the

Synagogue and see their support, their encouragement and of course their friendship. I look

forward to many more wonderful sharing occasions and more opportunities to highlight and

showcase the amazing amount of commitment that we have within these walls.

We have much to look forward to in the coming new year!

OPERATION ISAIAH 2018

Conducted under different titles at Conservative and Reform synagogues throughout the country (ours is called Operation Isaiah), High Holiday drives are designed to collect food and other basic necessities for our local pantries in a major 'big push' kind of way. (Our local pantry is operated by the Wayne Interfaith Network). For this event Shomrei Torah provide basic necessities such as personal care items, cleaning products, and paper goods. Our non-food collection complements the collection of food at Temple Beth Tikvah. In this way both congregations are able to work together to meet the needs of our community, as well as fulfill our own missions. These collections are dramatic and impressive. Hundreds of bags are collected. But in these times the amounts collected in these big drives only last about six months. To supplement these collections Shomrei Torah and Temple Beth Tikvah continue to bring food and other basic necessities throughout the rest of the year as well. The churches and other organizations and businesses in town also generously contribute.

Operation Isaiah is Shomrei Torah's opportunity to go to the store during The Ten Days, buy what we need for ourselves, and then take an extra few moments to buy items for those who are less fortu-nate. Although we live in a society where most things are optional, Judaism says that caring for others is not optional. Fortunately, we have a congregation which is responsive and caring all year long.

Lists of needed items will be available at Rosh Hashanah. You will be asked to bring your filled grocery bags back to the synagogue prior to the start of the Kol Nidre service. Save the date: on Thursday, September 20, we will sort, bag and box the donated items, load cars/SUVs/Minivans and deliver the goodies to the Wayne Interfaith Network Pantry Annex. Adult and teen volunteers will be needed. Further details will be released closer to the holidays.

We look forward to your participation with us in this special congregational mitzvah. Enjoy the rest of the summer. See you in September!

Karen Weiss for Operation Isaiah Betty Singer, Shomrei Torah Representative to the Wayne Interfaith Network

SHOMREI TORAH MEN’S CLUB

Shomrei Torah's Men's Club completed a quiet, but successful, year. One of its new programs was Wednesday Walking, aka Halakhic Hiking. Unfortunately, the long hard winter (and cool spring) put an end to the hikes, but we hope to resume this fall.

The program year kicked off, as always, with a Sukkah Dinner. The fare was falafel and middle eastern; the turnout was great, even though the timing of the holidays was tougher than usual. This year, the Sukkah Dinner will be held on Sunday evening, September 30. The theme will be Moo Shu and Shmooze in the Shomrei Sukkah. Try to say that five times fast. Condiments such as Soy Vay will be available, along with chopsticks and Tsingtao Beer, if the Rabbi gives it his heck-sher. The test on who can say the event name five times in a row will be administered after a mini-mum of one bottle of Tsingtao has been consumed. Think of this as Shomrei's version of the Coney Island Nathan's Hot Dog eating contest. This year, the winner ate 74 dogs. Saying our event name ought to be duck soup in comparison. Will we be able to find kosher Peking Duck? Come to the event and see for yourself.

In November, our Man of the Year was Rob Baron, Shomrei's perennial Purim King (with all due re-spect to King Ahasuerus). The next Man of Year Dinner will be held on November 14. Save the date - and stay posted for news of our next honoree.

Club events included our annual Super Bowl pool. Some lucky schmo won the jackpot with an un-usual 2 - 2 point combination. Others felt the fix was in. The club also ran two blood drives for the first time in many years. The traditional December drive was complimented by another drive in June, which had a great turnout. At the latter event, enough blood was collected to provide 84 units of blood for people in need of transfusions.

The very successful Purim Carnival came off really well, despite some uncertainty. Until two weeks before the Carnival, we had no idea if the social hall would be usable or not due to the renovations which were underway. Rob and his crew put the Carnival together in an incredibly short time, so we didn't miss out on the fun.

The Club hosted its annual Passover Wine Sale. New selections were added to the list, including old favorites and a couple of new surprises. Tequila is now kosher for Pesach, and so one can have matzah tacos with an appropriate beverage.

Yom Hashoah Yellow Candles rounded out the year. These were distributed to everyone in the con-gregation. This year marked the 80th anniversary of Kristallnacht, the night of shattered glass. The club will continue this meaningful program next year, and hopes to use social media to encourage people to light candles and show their act of remembrance to others.

In the middle of this hot summer, with the Jewish holidays coming early this year, it's not too early to wish everyone L'Shana Tovah u/Metukah. May you and your families have a good and a very sweet New Year 5779.
