Issue 38 Celebrating the Queen’s 90th Birthday For Care Home Open Day 2016, Hicare Homes hosted a Royal themed day in honour of Her Majesty the Queen. We celebrated the Queen’s 90th birthday and hosted street parties at our homes. Care Home Open day is a national scheme which encourages communities across the UK to visit their local care homes; connecting residents with the community, challenging stereotypes and dispelling some of the myths of residential care. Both Meadow’s Court and Spencefield Grange hosted a variety of themed activities. Tours of the homes were being held all day for visitors. We had queen impressionists at both homes and resident’s had fun wishing her happy birthday. Both homes held a raffle with a first prize of an aeroplane lesson donated to us by Heatspec. This was won by Louise and Santok at Meadow’s Court and Spencefield Grange, respectively. In total the homes managed to raise £175 for the resident’s comfort fund. Both homes also enjoyed a visit from their local fire stations. Residents were invited to hear about how the fire engines work and take part in a display with the tools and equipment. The firefighters then joined us for an afternoon buffet, BBQ and games. Thank you to the Leicestershire fire and rescue service for getting involved. We would also like to thank resident Adam, at Spencefield Grange who delivered a wonderful opening and closing speech all about Care Home Open Day and the home. We were touched by his kind words and it was the perfect start and finish to the day. Both open days were a great success, residents and staff all had a wonderful time. A huge thanks to all the members of the community that joined us, you helped make the day very special.

‘Egg-Straordinary’ Easter CelebrationsEaster is one of the oldest Christian festivals. It celebrates the resurrection of Jesus Christ. At Hicare we couldn’t resist the opportunity to embrace this national holiday.

Our Easter celebrations were jam packed full of ‘egg-citment.’ Our residents enjoyed taking part in a variety of activities. We had arts and crafts which were displayed around the home. We also had bingo, a raffl e, puzzles and much more. Our residents enjoyed playing board games and other table top games with their families. Our residents were thrilled to receive their Easter eggs from Hicare’s Directors and enjoyed sitting with their families tucking into their eggs. Pearl declared that she thought her Easter egg was “absolutely delicious!”

We were also honoured by a visit form the Goodwood Evangelical Church, who delivered a sermon to our residents and led them through an afternoon of prayer, song and worship. A thought provoking afternoon.

St Patricks Day At Hicare St Patrick’s Day is a cultural and religious day celebrating the life of St Patrick, the patron saint of Ireland. Whilst it is primarily celebrated in Ireland, other countries all over the world also recognise and take part in it.

We decorated our homes in green and Irish themes which helped us get into the spirit of the day. This is always appreciated by our residents who enjoyed helping to make the decorations. We also enjoyed some tasty Irish snacks and delicacies prepared by our talented kitchen staff .

We were blessed by a visit from the Shaun Burden School of Irish Dance who beautifully performed some Irish dances for our resident to enjoy - and in some cases joined in! Our resident’s loved showing off their Irish dancing moves. One resident, Catherine, even commented that St Patricks day was her favourite holiday!

Red Lippy Day 2016 We took part in Red Lippy Day 2016 this May. This fund raising opportunity invites people all over the UK to wear red lipstick to raise money for Dementia UK.

Dementia research is a cause that Hicare is very passionate about. Both of our homes have dementia friendly environments and features throughout. Staff and residents across our homes joined together to raise money for this wonderful charity. Residents enjoyed reminiscing over wearing red lipstick whilst tucking into some homemade “lipstick” cakes.

We managed to raise a fantastic £110. Well done everyone! We look forward to taking part next year!

For Dementia Awareness Week 2016, we hosted a variety of activities with the aims to inform our local community about dementia and how someone can live well with dementia. Dementia Awareness Week is a national event with care providers all over the country getting involved. Dementia is a cause that we strongly believe in. Our homes are dementia friendly environments and have features throughout the homes to help residents with dementia navigate and feel safe, secure and happy.

Dementia Awareness Week was from 15th May - 21st May and we had open days on 17th and 20th at Meadow’s Court and Spencefi eld Grange respectively.

Meadow’s Court chose to embrace the “Golden Age of Cinema” as their chosen theme and activities were based around this. Activities were chosen to spark conversation between residents and to encourage reminiscence. This included conversational cards of big movie stars from the 1940’s/50’s, a vintage fi lm experience and a sensory room experience. Spencefi eld Grange hosted a Victorian themed open day. Staff were dressed up in vintage clothing whilst residents took part in traditional games and

activities such as skittles, point of view cards, cards, dominoes, etc. The manager’s at the home put on a play of how someone living with dementia acts and feels which provided a lot of insight to all the guests and staff . We also prepared a display for reception with pictures of residents and staff as children and young people as a conversational point for everyone to get involved in. Spencefi eld Grange were also honoured by a visit from the Salvation Army band, who provided residents with an afternoon of musical entertainment.

At both open days, we held Dementia Cafés hosted by our very own Dementia Champion, Manisha Zala. These sessions provide visitors with information about dementia and how to encourage and support people living with the condition. It also allowed attendees to become Dementia Friends at the end of the session.

The open days were a complete success. We set out to increase awareness of dementia and thanks to all our staff , residents and visitors this was most defi nitely achieved.

We would like to thank everyone involved.

Well done everyone!

Trip to Glebe Garden CentreWith summer well on its way, staff and residents at Spencefi eld Grange visited Glebe Garden Centre with the intention of fi nding some new fl owers and plants to put in our sensory garden. This gave the opportunity for some of our green thumbed residents to decide exactly which plants they wanted for our garden whilst others were just happy to pick the brightly coloured fl owers. A most enjoyable day for all involved and a great team eff ort from our staff and residents participating to make our home an even more beautiful place.

Celebrating 10 years of Service! We are very proud of two of our employees at Meadow’s Court who have recently celebrated their 10 years’ service for Hicare. Bernie Tuckley and Jackie Khera were pleasantly surprised to receive a visit from one of our Directors, Sue Nanuwa, who proceeded to present them with a gold watch and a certifi cate of appreciate.

Thank you Bernie and Jackie! We hope you continue to have a long and fulfi lling career at Hicare!

Happy Retirement Betty! We would like to wish Betty Freestone of Meadow’s Court a happy retirement. Betty has been with Hicare since we took over the management of Meadow’s Court in 1998. However, her career at Meadow’s Court began in the early 1980’s. Betty can always been seen with a smile on her face. She is one of the resident’s favourite staff members and this is refl ected in her dedication to them all past and present.

To celebrate Betty’s retirement, we hosted a surprise party for her; attended by current and former staff members, company Directors and residents. Betty was presented with an engraved plaque and fl ower arrangement to commemorate her years of service, as well as commemorative photo album, a homemade cake and a card produced by her colleagues and residents.

St Georges Day At Hicare St George is the patron saint of England and St George’s Day is celebrated every year on 23rd April. Legend says that despite never visiting England or any part of Britain, St George became revered in England for his contributions in the crusades and the 100 year war. To this day, his banner is still used as the fl ag of England.

We decorated our homes with fl ags, shields and little St George fi gures. We held activities to celebrate the day. These included a table football competition, skittles and arts and crafts. Residents and staff had lots of fun together and were joined by visiting families and friends of the residents. A lovely day for everyone!
