Celebrating the Artsat Grace Episcopal Church

Silent Auction – February 26, 2017

Silent Auction… We’re experimenting with a new project at Grace Church to celebrate the artists in our midst, find new homes for some of our treasures, raise money for a good cause (outreach), and enjoy a fun evening of fellowship – part of the Mardi Gras Dinner and Talent Show festivities on February 26th.

How will it work? Parishioners and other friends of Grace Church have donated paintings and other forms of art. We’ll offer these items for sale (bidding) starting February 17th, and up through the Mardi Gras event, Sunday, February 26 – until the bidding closes, around 8 p.m., when we’ll announce the highest bidders…

Advance bidding, in person… Starting on February 17th, we’ll create a display in the main lobby of the church, with images of each item, and with sign-up sheets, allowing everyone interested to enter a “silent bid.” That way, anyone who visits our church can participate, in person. By Saturday afternoon, February 25th, we’ll have all the items on display (not just photographs, allowing everyone to see them, and to make bids on their favorite items.

To reach a wider audience, we’ll also post this slide show on the church’s website, and on the Facebook page, as a way to promote and advertise this auction to a wide audience. Anyone interested in bidding can either come by the church and make a bid, or contact Ellen Brown (828-785-4225; [email protected]) and ask her to make a bid on your behalf.

#1 Anne Jarema – The Shell Gatherers (donor – Anne Jarema)

About the artist: In spite of going on to other careers, Anne Jarema always carried the love of painting and found time to take courses, including Life Drawing and Portraits at the Carnegie Institute in Pittsburgh and the Students Art League in New York City. Even before retiring, she took watercolor classes from Jack Yelle, a Catskill based painter. After retirement, Anne started classes with Arthur Gilmore of Greenwood Lake, New York. She has exhibited at the Catskill Art Society and with the Northeast Watercolor Society. She recently became a member of the North Carolina Watercolor Society. Her paintings are in private collections and a new wing of the Catskill Regional Medical Center.

Around the Harbor is an unusual and unique print of a water color painted by Immy Withers, mother of David Withers. Immy painted these scene in the round, from different perspectives of the Marina at Oriental, NC circa 1990.

#6 Gertrude N. Eldredge – Village Walk, 1949 (donor – Maria Mason)

This oil painting is a mid-century modern piece, signed and dated 1949. Eldridge, from Michigan, was a friend of Maria Mason’s mother-in-law, Janice Pulse Schierhorn. It depicts the Shenandoah Valley.

Oil painting by Gertrude Eldredge, mid-century modern; signed and dated 1949; Eldridge, probably from Michigan, was a friend of Maria Mason’s mother-in-law, Janice Pulse Schierhorn.

A native of Lancaster, Pennsylvania, Ann Vasilik arrived in Asheville in 1988, and has been very active in the art scene, painting landscapes and city scenes throughout the Western North Carolina region. She earned a BA in Fine Arts from Philadelphia College of Art. Martha and Randy acquired this print several years ago, as a gift on Randy’s retirement.

This trio of French prints were made in the 1950’s, and Steven Birkhofer bought them at an auction in Atlanta, Georgie.

Steven Birkhofer purchased this at an auction in Wilmington, NC. Sam Bissette (1921 – 2005) was a WWII vet, a career banker and active board member of art societies and 2 NC museums. He also had a 30 year career as a prolific watercolorist, focusing largely on NC landscapes, buildings and landmarks. This is an unusual pen and ink sketch done at the beginning of his painting career.

#11 - Mary Anne Keel Jenkins – Female Nude(donor – Steven Birkhofer)

Steven Birkhofer purchased this at an auction in Wilmington, NC. Mary Anne Keel Jenkins (1929 – present) is a well known artist , and one of North Carolina’s significant living female painters. Her work scans 5 decades with 4 decades of distinctive abstract styles. This sketch is noteworthy in that it is not abstract. Her work is in permanent collections in more than 7 NC university and state museums, as well as in museums in SC and Minnesota. Her abstract oil paintings are currently in auction sites online selling for $800 - $1,700.

JFK’s favorite photo of himself. Mark Shaw (1921-1969) was a famous American fashion and celebrity photographer of the 50s and 60s. He worked for Life Magazine from 1952-68 where his photography graced 27 covers.

This is a vintage USSR Soviet Navy submarine wall clock, with a heavy glass front – in mint condition. Comes with a modern display pedestal of cast iron. Key included? Internet research reveals these were made by Vostok factory that was then called Christopol Watch Factory. Ebay listings of this very clock: $165-$875.

The Carsons bought this at an auction. It is a French mantle clock from the late 19th century. It can stand alone, is 13.5 “ high, 9 inches wide, and 7 inches deep. It also has a pedestal that it can be placed on (12.5” high)

This painting was a gift to the Carsons. Unfortunately, they don’t know anything about the artist, but her style is reminiscent of wildlife paintings by Charles Fracé.

This pair of Mid-century Modern end tables, part of the Henredon “Circa 70” line are probably from their Hollywood Regency style. They can be for living room or bedroom. Henredon is a nationally respected high end furniture company in Morganton, NC begun in 1945, now celebrating over 70 years of quality craftsmanship.
