EXHIBITION

Spot the ArabFeaturing the works by ‘onsite’ artist John McRae, curated by

Cash Brown.

Backspace Gallery | 1–18 MarchThursday – Sunday | 12–4pm

Spot The Arab, by internationally renowned Sydney-based artist

John McRae, is an exhibition that refl ects upon issues of religion, race,

gender, orientation, nationality and freedom. Visitors are invited to assess and

guess the cultural and ethnic backgrounds of the portrait sitters,

contemplating who is an Arab, who is not, and what those assumptions mean.

“Spot the Arab” investigates themes of the illusions and stereotypes of what is an

Arab today. This exhibition looks at 20 people, photographed over the past decade

in numerous countries and from different religious and ethnic backgrounds. Each

person poses with props, sometimes imposed by me, and enacts the role of what

they consider an Arab to be today.

“The sitters include men, women and transgender people in the “guise”

of Arabs, Muslims or people of the various factions of Islamic faith.

It focuses on preconceptions, social fi ctions and masculinity, recurring themes in

my work.” John McRae, 2017

European Settlers

ExhibitionA display of items migrants brought with

them when they arrived in Ballarat during

the 1950s. Focussing on the larger groups

from Britain, Italy, Germany, Greece,

Netherlands and Poland.

Harmony Day is on 21 March and was rst celebrated in Australia in 1999. It is a time when Australians can come together to re ect on, and celebrate, the many cultures that make up our country and show an appreciation of Australia’s diversity. Orange has been adopted as the colour to symbolise this day.

March 21 is the United Nations International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination. It marks the anniversary of the Sharpeville massacre, which took place on this day in 1960 and resulted in the deaths of 69 South Africans who took part in a peaceful protest against the apartheid regime.

Where possible, all English speech and song on the main stage will be translated into Auslan

Bookings by Wednesday 14 March
