0UR MEMBERSHIP SOCIAL WAS ON THE 11TH AT 3R RACING. It was my pleasure to present a

number of awards to several of our members. The Porsche Paton award is presented to members with at least 10-years of service who have made significant contributions to RMR. The 2017 Porsche Patron Award was presented to Mike and Jane Hebert. Mike is currently our Goodie Store Chair and Jane was a co-chair for our very successful Holiday Party. The 2017 Enthusiast of the Year went to Brian Leary. Well-deserved Brian!

Dan Ca rl son Chie f Dr iv ing Instructor presented the 2017 driving awards. The 2017 Distinguished Driver award went to Dale Hartzell. The Most Improved Female Driver was Debbie Keisling and the Most Improved Male Driver was Mark Fenner. Congratulations to our driver award recipients!

On February 10th we will hold our annual Volunteer Party at Lamar Street Station. The Volunteer Party recognizes all the volunteers that made our 2017 events possible. We wil l recognize Board Members, Event Chairs, Committee Chairs, Driv ing Inst ructors and other event volunteers. We have over 150 volunteers that made our events successfu l and we owe a l l our volunteers a deep debt of gratitude!

Our New Member Socia l wil l be held at 3Zero3 on March 3rd. The New Member Social tends to be one of our largest gatherings of the Porsche fa ithful and should not be missed. At this event we will make available our Committee Chairs to explain the function of their committee in support of RMR activities and events. This is a great opportunity for new members to meet other RMR members and learn about our events held during the year.

Our Zone 9 Presidents Meeting will be held in El Paso, TX on March 3rd hosted by Rich Sanders our Zone 9 Representative and the Carrera Region. At th is meet ing Zone Presidents get together and share information about best practices within the zone. Webmasters and Newsletter Editors also attend for the same purposes. This year, I together with Russ Rydberg our HighGear ed itor a nd Scot t Roger s , ou r Webmaster will be in attendance.

We are currently f inalizing the High Plains Raceway contracts for the 2018 season. This year the Club Race will be a 3-day event in order to host the f irst club race 6-hour enduro. Our normal track events are 2-days. Costs of renting the track continues to increase and this year will be $9000 for a 2-day event and over $20,000 for the Club Race. Our fixed costs for a HPDE at High Plains continue to run about $17,000 for a 2- day event. We have not yet determined what our registration fees will be in 2018 but will do so during our 2018 budgeting process.

Unfortunately, our f irst driving event of the year, the Eiskhana was canceled due to poor ice conditions. This is unfortunate but not unforeseen as we have had to cancel previous Eiskhanas for the same reason.

RMR had a very good year in 2017. We had net income prior to any year-end adjustments of about $13,000 which was over our 2017 budget by almost $2,000 and a very sharp improvement over 2016’s loss of $11,600. The turnaround was due in part to improved performance in our drivers educational events. Thanks goes out to Dan Carlson, Brian Leary and all the event chairs and driving instructors for this improvement. Additional rebates from PCA also helped with our financial performance.

FEBRUARY IS THE MONTH OF LOVE. Love for your special someone,

your family, your friends, and don’t forget your Porsche! With this warm winter and lack of snow (sorry skiers, snowboarders, and snowmobilers), how could you not be loving the mostly dry roads for taking a leisurely spin in your Porsche?

Don’t forget the nice gesture of giving someone something special from the Goodie Store. You can find both PCA items as well as RMR items for sale. Don’t delay! It is never too soon or too late! Visit https://www.pcawebstore.com or rmr.pca.org and click the Goodie Store name on the black menu bar.

A s we cont inue to grow our membership, I am meeting more and more great people. There are

so many interesting stories relating to Porsches and their people. There have been stories of sharing the love for the marque; to stories of handing down a car to younger generations, and to stories of loved ones recently passed that loved their Porsche. And the seldom heard of story of working hard to pay for every penny of your first car before your 16 years of age! Our members all have stories and no matter how big or small you think they are, they all share something in common…….. Porsche! These stories touch my heart and this is a special gift I receive being your Membership Chair! You are Porsche family to me! Share the love!

Members, do you have any stories involving your P car? Please write

a recap about your story and share with the club! Don’t forget to send in pictures of your car too! Did you see this month’s cover picture of Bill & Amy Simon’s 993 Targa? You never know, you could make the front cover too! Send them to: [email protected]!

IN THE ZONERich Sanders

PCA Zone 9 Representative

HighGear 1958 - 2018 | Celebrating 60 Years |

PCA NEEDS YOU...An important Zone 9 milestone

slipped by in the past two months. I have no way of knowing exactly which day or month, but the combined nu mber of member s p lu s co -members in Zone 9 crossed the 5,000 mark! Congratulations to regional membership chairs and the rest of you who act as “ambassadors” for PCA in your everyday interactions. It’s a nice benchmark to finish 2017.

December seems to be Holiday party time throughout the zone. I managed to get to three of them prior to the conclusion of the year. One was here in my home region. Always nice to be home for a real tradition. The other two were both in Texas regions, Llano Estacado and West Texas. For my first zone rep visit to these two Texas regions, my wife Julie elected to join me. I think she felt sorry for me going solo to events that were mostly couples, and where I hadn’t met many of the members yet. We both had a great time and want to thank the leadership of both regions for their Texas hospitality and fun drives. Fun drives on for a Holiday party? Yep. Texas does it big. The West Texas region combines their Holiday party with a three day drive out. This trip was to all the way to Fort Davis very close to the Mexico border. Close enough to the border that the radar blimps could be seen keeping an eye on things Porsches.

This monthly letter is being written just hours before the ball drops us all

into 2018. In the next month, most regions that have not already done so, will be locking down their annual activity calendars. That means a lot of volunteer coordination, finding pa rk ing lot s a nd runways for autocrosses, making deposits, locking down dates at race tracks for HPDEs and Club Races, and similar work planning socials and driving tours. In the Roadrunner region specifically, there’s a particularly complex level of work finalizing the planning and staff ing for Treffen Tamaya from April 22-24 where registration is currently scheduled to open around mid-January.

As I came into the zone rep role, one of my planned activities was to introduce a much improved zone website. Work on the website is beginning now, and I hope to have it live before the end of the first quarter. One of the goals for the website will be to make it very easy for webmasters from each individual region to easily upload their own calendar events, allowing all of us to more easily see the full scope of activities throughout the zone- and to perhaps encourage some extended travel plans for PCA members.

All of the region calendar planning happening now, the national event planning for Treffen in New Mexico, and the support that I’m receiving to pull together a new zone web site, comes 100% as the result of a LOT of dedicated volunteers. If you are

reading this, please ask yourself how you might get involved a bit more in 2018. Ask a regional committee member how to help. And if you don’t find a way to engage locally, then consider going online to pca.org. and then type “National Volunteer Form” into the search bar. As you scroll through the form you will find a long list of national committees. These committees don’t just need leads. They a lso need members that are representative of different parts of North America to support the leaders with their own special knowledge or skill. So if you really enjoy autocross for example, then you can sign up to join the autocross committee. Just f ill out the form, check autocross, and add a comment in the “additional information” box indicating that you want to be a member on the committee rather than leading it. Most committees meet by phone, travel not required. National committee membership can be a fun way to dip your toe in the water without a major commitment. Think about it. Can you do just a bit more to support PCA in 2018?

TRACK TALK Dan CarlsonLeader, Chief Driving Instructor Committee

2017 DRIVING AWARD WINNERS The prestigious 2017 Driving Awards were presented at last month’s Member Social at 3R Racing.

Distinguished Driver:Dale Hartzell

The Anita Moyle Distinguished Driver Award goes to the driver who exhibits excellence in on-track high performance driving and instruction. Dale Hartzell is most deserving of this award.

Dale bought first Porsche in 2005 and has owned/learned the nuances of several since. You may have seen one of his vintage red Porsches in the Hagerty Insurance ads.

He participated in his first RMR DE in 2009 and since then he has significantly contributed to our Club’s high performance driving program by co-chairing the RMR October DE for five years and working on the Club Race Committee for two years. Dale is one of our Club’s most requested Instructors.

After five years of doing DEs in his 996, he jokingly said that he was looking for a car that could pass CDI Doug Bartlett on the track – funny! So in June of 2016 Dale bought a Cup Car. He states that he had to learn how to drive again as it is totally different than driving a street car. He first drove it at Sebring with an Instructor from their region - talk about intimidating on so many levels...

Dale is thankful for the core skills learned in DEs that provided such a good foundation for him to build on. What he learned is that racing offers that next level of challenges that you can never get in a DE, but that he would have never gotten there without learning at DEs first.

Dale went on to be last year’s National PCA Club Racing Champion for his class.

Most Improved Female Driver: Debbie Keisling

We’ve seen versions of Debbie’s story in the past, but this one is so much hers.

Her path to performance driving started as part of a 2016 New Year’s resolution. She was determined to try three things that she had never done before. So when her husband Steve asked her if she’d l ike to try Ladies Day, Debbie said “yes” because she thought that this would be a good opportunity to see what he was so excited about and at the same time, fulfill one of her New Year’s resolutions.

Like some, she went to the track to be with her husband, and never expected to enjoy this sport; in fact, she thought that she would be bored! How wrong she was and she quickly learned how contagious “track fever” is!

Despite the fact that it was near 100 degrees at that f irst Ladies Day, Debbie was hooked. It was so exhilarating and fantastic for her that she was soon on the track again.

Debbie says that she is blessed to have the opportunity to have her own track car and a husband who is so encouraging and supportive. Debbie and Steve, an Instructor, have two of the most beautiful cars on the track. They have so much fun when they are out on the track together, often switching playing “follow the leader.”

She says, however, that she’s not sure that he thought this whole thing through… someday she might be faster than him!

Most Improved Male Driver:Mark Fenner

Mark Fenner is another most deserving award winner.

In 2014 he bought a 996 Turbo with the intent to track it. The following year he participated in a handful of autocrosses and DEs.

Then former CDI and PCA Club racer Dan Mayer got a hold of him. Dan told him several times that his car was too nice to track and that he should consider buying a separate track car. Dan urged him to purchase a lower horsepower “momentum” car to really learn how to drive (meaning not relying on the gas pedal of a high horsepower car to cover mistakes). Dan was convincing and Mark bought a race-prepped 944S from Pat Moyle. The car was raced by both Pat and Vicki Earnshaw, National Head of PCA Club Racing and one of our CDIs. Coincidently, the 944 came with the car number affixed to the vehicle that Mark had for the 996 – number 70. It was destiny!

In 2016 Mark drove the #70 at several DEs with Dan serving as his mentor. He was approved to drive solo for the RMR Club Race weekend’s Advanced Solo DE. We laugh about a rookie mistake that he made there – Mark didn’t think that a “point-by” was required for passing and wouldn’t give one to then RMR President John Mackin! Not a good move, but I do believe they are now talking!

Mark earned his PCA Club Racing License in 2017 and raced not only at High Pla ins Raceway (HPR) but Hallett, Hastings, and Road America. Mark received the hard-to-win Corner Workers Award at both HPR and Road America – WOW!!! He is proud that he has never had an incident (if you don’t count the John Mackin experience!) and was able to drive car home from each race with no damage.

HighGear | Celebrating 60 Years | 1958 - 2018

Dale, Debbie, and Mark - congratulations to each of you on receiving these well-deserved and hard-earned awards.

WE ARE SO PROUD OF YOU! FOR PAST WINNERS,

PUSH THE BUTTONBrian Leary RMR Columnist

HighGear | Celebrating 60 Years | 1958 - 2018

I’VE BEEN PARTICIPATING IN HIGH PERFORMANCE DRIVERS EDUCATION EVENTS SINCE 2008.

Over that time I’ve gone from being a newbie, to a track rat, to an instructor, a Chief Driv ing Instructor, and I’ve even dipped my toe into competitive auto racing. It has been a wonderful ride, and as we prepare for the HPDE/Autocross 101 class this coming March 24th, I was reflecting back on my first weekend at the track, and I thought I’d share that with you.

My story actually started during the summer of 2008 at the Concours d’ Elegance at Arapahoe Community College. I’ve always been a ‘car guy’, and did a lot of drag racing in high school (mostly on the track). The Concours was just down the street from our home, so I headed out with my eight year old son Ian to check out the cars. Since I previously owned a 1989 Arena Red 944, we immediately went over to the area where the Porsches were parked. There were dozens of them, of all types, years and colors.

A s we wandered through the collection, we happened upon a beautiful red and blue older 911 race car, complete with a racing seat, roll bars and a stripped out interior. We both said ‘cool!’ at the same time. As

we looked the car over, a very large man got out of his chair and walked around the car. He came over to Ian and said “Did you want to sit in it?” Ian was caught off guard by the thought of actually sitting in a real race car. “Sure!” Ian said. The owner introduced himself to me and then helped Ian climb in the car. It turns out the owner was a race car driver and had been racing for many years. His name was Jerry Schouten, and he was the first member of the Rocky Mountain Region Porsche Club that I had the opportunity to meet. He mentioned to me about a race track that was being built outside of Byers, Colorado and directed me over to a booth that was promoting the track. The people at the booth were very helpful, and told me about all the car and motorcycle clubs that were a part of an initiative to build a new race track called High Plains Raceway in the middle of nowhere east of Denver. It was going to open in April of the following year and the various clubs would be holding High Performance Drivers Education (HPDE) weekends during the spring and summer. It all sounded very exciting to me.

Throughout the summer I started checking around the three regional dea lerships for a used Porsche Cayman. I loved the idea of a mid-engine car and loved the looks as well. What I didn’t know was just how good they handle. I ended up finding a beautiful used silver base model with only 20,000 miles on it. I would find any excuse to go out to

my garage at night to take a look at it (tell me you haven’t done that too!).

So now I have the tool, but the new track wouldn’t be open until the following spring. But maybe there are other race tracks in the state? I searched around on the internet and found a website for the Rocky Mountain Region Porsche Club. On the website they were promoting a three day High Performance DE in September at a race track west of Pueblo. I watched a couple of on-track videos on Youtube and that was all I needed to see. Wow, that looked like a blast. I’m in. But am I qualified to do this, and how do I even register?

T h e r e w a s a l i n k o n t h e R MR website that took me to Motorsportreg.com. The registration page for the Pueblo DE was full of details on what the requirements were and how to sign up. I filled out all the information and before I knew it I’m staring at the ‘Register’ button to complete the process. As I hovered over the button with my cursor I thought to myself, “My life is about to change.”

I pushed the button.I spent the following weeks getting

everything ready. Got a helmet, did my pre-tech, changed the engine and brake oil and bought a pair of white Puma racing shoes. Yea, I was a little excited. I woke up the morning of the DE, loaded up a cooler, and when I pulled out of the garage it was pouring rain. I hadn’t counted on that. The drive from Denver to Pueblo was a DE in itself, as the rain never let up. When I finally got to the track, just the drive up from the

Page 15: CELEBRATING 60 YEARS 1958-2018 - PCA

highway to the registration building was a challenge, so I was starting to doubt my ability to drive on a race track.

The rain had stopped for the most part, but the sky was overcast and the track was wet, with big puddles in places. I went into registration and got my packet, car number and went through an hour long driver’s training program. I went back to the Cayman to put my car numbers on the car, but I didn’t have any painter’s tape. The guy next to be came over and introduced himself. His name was Ronald Jones, and he was so helpful to me over the weekend, giving me pointers and answering questions. He had some tape and helped me put the numbers on the Cayman. He even loaned me his air pressure gauge, which I used on all four tires, without a clue as to what the proper air pressure might be.

When my run group was finally called, a woman walked up to me and told me that she would be my instructor for the day. She was a racer, and had raced at a number of tracks around the country, but her home track was Mid-Ohio. Her name was Vicki Earnshaw, and five years after this first meeting, we would become good friends, and co-chairs for the RMR/PCA 2013 club race.

Vicki and I sat in the car prior to going out on the track and she gave me a lot of good advice about what to do during the first session. The best piece of information was to go slow around turn 10 if the track is wet. My Cayman still had paper registration tags on the car, so the last thing I wanted to do is slide off the track! With that, we headed out. The whole experience was a blur as there was so much to remember; the turns, corner worker bunker locations, braking zones, what the waving yellow f lag meant, and how to get back to my parking space in the paddock. By the end of the first session, I couldn’t wipe the smile off my face. During the

following sessions, and throughout the weekend, I began to go faster and things started to slow down and make more sense. Vicki’s instruction was invaluable, and I never once went off track.

Saturday evening they had a ‘Beer :30’ in the paddock where I got to meet a number of RMR and AMR club members. I recently looked up who attended the Pueblo ‘Super 50 DE’, and many are friends of mine now. I’m sure a couple of them were chuckling at my white Puma ‘racing shoes’.

On Sunday, my wife and son drove down from Littleton to check out the action and watch me drive on the track. We had so much fun together, and I think my son caught the ‘car bug’ that day.

The one thing that I realized, looking back on that weekend, was that it really would have helped if there was some kind of class that I could have attended prior to my first HPDE to find out how to get registered, how prepare my car for the track, what a ‘pre-tech’ was, what to expect when I got to the track, what my instructor would teach me and what kind of wear and tear to expect with my car.

Fortunately for those of you that either recently bought a Porsche, or have had that baby for many years and are now curious about what it would

be like to drive your car on a race track or speed through an autocross course, we have just the class for you! On Saturday, March 24th, from 9 am to 1 pm, we will be holding our second annual ‘HPDE/Autocross 101’ class at 3R Racing which is located at 3701 So. Kalamath Street in Englewood, Colorado. Registration is through Motorsportreg.com, and you can find that registration link on the RMR website (rmr.pca.org). Scott Henderson and I will walk you through all the steps needed to get prepared for your first DE or AX and get you ready for a great day out at one of the many fabulous race tracks (and there are a bunch!) or autocross courses around Colorado. We will also have a number of specialists who will be presenting and will be available to answer any questions.

We will also have a booth at the New Member Orientation Social on Saturday, March 17th at 3Zero3 Motorsports (10 am to 2 pm) where you can meet the presenters and find out more about the class.

So get registered, and come to our training class in March and find out why Ferry Porsche said “Our cars are meant to be driven. Not polished.”

Want to possibly change your life forever? Push the button!

I GET AROUNDDanielle BadlerRMR/PCA Columnist

THEY’RE PASSING, ONE BY ONEWhat’s happening to the members

of what Tom Brokaw named “The Greatest Generation?” I’ll tell you what’s happening. They’re passing, one by one.

Dan Gurney. Growing up, when I started to follow racing in the ‘60s, he was my idol. Along with Jim Clark. In fact, I believe there’s a story that Clark’s mother told Gurney, maybe at Jimmy’s funeral in ’68, that, of all the racers he competed against, he respected Gurney the most.

I saw Gurney race once, at the Can Am race at Bridgehampton, also in ’68. He was in his Olsonite Eagle. It was also the first race I ever saw, live. At the time, I was scraping nickels together, debating endlessly whether to buy my f irst sports car, a ’64 Triumph TR-4, from a friend of my family. For all the money I had in the world, $800. Of course, I came home and bought the car. How could I not?

That car is long gone, and so is the track.

Gurney wa s t he c enterpiec e of a whole wide world that I was introduced to, in the pages of Road & Track and Car and Driver. Names and places that I would barely dare to think about, for fear they really didn’t exist. Monaco. Spa. Zandvoort. Silverstone. Monza.

In the early years of Car and Driver under the editorial hand of David E. Davis, Jr., who also passed away a few years ago, the magazine did a lot of outrageous stuff. In fact, I believe the first issue under David E. was the legendary Pontiac GTO/Ferrari GTO comparison. Although they never actually had a Ferrari GTO to test. No matter.

Then there was the “Gurney for President” campaign. The magazine printed up bumper stickers, pins… all the paraphernalia. In 1964. Did Dan have a platform? No. In David E.’s eyes, he was just a better all-around

person than the candidates who were running. And the whole idea was outrageous enough to sell magazines. Despite the fact that Gurney was 33 … too young to be President.

What immortalized him to me was the original Cannonball Baker Sea-to-Shining-Sea Memorial Trophy Dash. Remember? Gurney and Car and Driver scribe Brock Yates, in Kirk F. White’s blue Ferrari Daytona.

I remember the story that, after the run, Kirk F. White offered to sell the car to Gurney. For something like $15,000. Gurney didn’t buy it. He didn’t have the money. The car’s now in somebody’s collection, and worth millions.

Brock Yates is no longer with us, either. Brock “The Assassin” Yates. I loved his writing.

The other thing about Gurney I thought was interesting was that his wife, Evi, had been working for “Dr. Porsche,” Huschke von Hanstein, who for many years was Porsche’s PR director. He was a legend too. Evi married Gurney in 1969 and moved to the U.S.

And then there are the cars. The Ford GT 40 with the bubble top so that Dan could fit with his helmet on. The All American Eagle Formula 1 car, in which he won at Spa in 1967. I read somewhere that, at the time, he didn’t think it was that big a deal, the fact that an American won in a car of his own design. He thought more wins would come. But they didn’t.

Nonetheless, you have to admit. It’s perhaps the most esthetically beautiful Formula 1 car ever made.

And, yes, after winning Le Mans in 1967 with A.J. Foyt, spraying the crowd with his magnum of champagne and, thereby, starting a trend.

The Gurney Flap. The Alligator. Which was a motorcycle where the rider sat low behind the gas tank. It made a lot of sense - lowered center of

gravity. But it didn’t sell.In the obituary in The New York

Times, Gurney is quoted as saying he considered himself a careful driver. “Race driving is a form of brinksmanship, I suppose. First you use your judgment to determine where the brink is. Then you use your skill to approach the brink and stay at that point.

“It’s sort of like balancing along a cliff,” he continued. “You can walk three or four feet from the cliff and have no problem, but someone closer to the edge can beat you. You need judgment to tell you where the edge of the cliff is and skill to get there and stay within a given safety margin.”

Gurney was asked once, “you don’t think about crashing, do you?”

“Don’t think about it?” he said. “I think about it all the time. That’s the essence of this, isn’t it? To go as fast as you can without getting killed.”

Let the record show that he died of natural causes, at 86. Rest in peace, Daniel Sexton Gurney, and all your compatriots.

A COUPLE OF WORDS ABOUT A RMR-PCA COUPLE

A recent visit on a mild December day i l lustrated Walt and Kathy Fricke’s long history with PCA and RMR. Their home is f illed with awards earned over the years: from chairing RMR’s last Porsche Parade in 2009 to their lengthy involvement with PCA Club Racing. Both in their 70’s and still driving, instructing and racing, Kathy and Walt still have a lot to teach.

Walt and Kathy first met at Woody Creek Raceway in Aspen, where he impressed her by noting she was driving a German car with a Spanish name and a French personalized license plate (“JOLIE”).

Walt bought his f irst Porsche in 1984 and started driving at the

now-defunct Second Creek Raceway in 1985. His first race was the La Carrera Panamericana in Mexico in 1990 in a VW Bug. Walt drove in the very first PCA Club Race, held in 1992 at Second Creek Raceway in Colorado. When asked why he got started at the racetrack, Walt replied simply, “I’m a guy.”

Kathy drove stock cars on an Iowa dirt track as a teenager. She joined PCA in 1985 and obtained her Club Racing license in 1995. Currently, Kathy has the distinction of being the oldest (or “most mature,” as she says) licensed female Club Racer. Additionally, Kathy has been an instructor since 1994.

Walt and Kathy have driven on many racetracks throughout the United States. Their favorite tracks a re Heart land Park in Topeka, Kansas, and our own local racetracks High Plains Raceway and Pueblo Motorsports Park.

Kathy’s favorite Club Race awards are the “Worker’s Choice” Awards she and Walt have both earned. She explained that the Worker’s Choice Award is coveted by Club Racers because it means the corner workers noticed the racer did something ‘above and beyond’—something good. (The corner workers at a Club Race must agree on which driver deserves the award.)

I asked if track driving is a good activity for couples. Both Walt and Kathy answered, “If both are into it.” Then when asked if they are competitive with each other, Kathy shared a story about the scoreboard showing the day’s time trial results at the former Mountain View Raceway near Mead. One day in the early 1990’s the scoreboard showed Kathy with the best time, not Walt. Kathy told of a picture showing her pointing to the circled best t ime. Walt’s response all these years later was, “I

may have been caught slightly off guard.” Kathy laughed and said that was the only time she was able to beat him.

When asked what are some of the major changes they’ve seen in their years driving on the track, Walt responded by saying the onset of PCA Club Racing did away with the AMR/RMR Challenge Series where members earned points via timed runs at DEs on Sunday afternoons. (Other ways to earn points were via autocross, Concours and rally.) They both a lso mentioned the advent of newer high-powered Porsches being brought to the track. Kathy mentioned recent improvements in the RMR instructor program including more structure as a major change.

When asked what advice they would give to RMR members just starting out on the track, Kathy said, “Listen to your instructor. It’s hard to teach someone who just wants to go fast.” Walt has been instructing since 1988. He likes instructing novices because he enjoys seeing their progress.

Walt and Kathy continue to enjoy participating in Driver Education events and Club Races. Their 1979 911 SC is currently being prepared for the 2018 track season. Again this year they plan to be at RMR track events, enthusiastically driving, racing, and steadfastly instructing the next generation of RMR track drivers.

DRIVING EVENTSTOUR

A tour is a non-competitive driving event in which participants follow a given route to a destination (which may or may not be known in advance). A tour may vary in length from a day trip to a long weekend with an overnight stay or two. Tours usually follow scenic routes (which are plentiful in Colorado) and/or visit interesting or obscure destinations. Tours are sometimes combined with ra l lies to add variety and a dose of competition to the event.

RMR hosts several tours each year; AMR typically offers several as well. A number of tours are usually offered at Porsche Parade.

RALLYA ra l ly is a competit ive event in

which contestants attempt to follow a course specified by a set of instructions. Rallies are typica lly run on public, paved roads, and speed limits are always observed. The two major types of rallies are the Time-Speed-Distance (TSD) rally and the Gimmick rally. In a TSD rally, participants attempt to follow the instructions precisely, maintaining the correct speed, as points are deducted for arriving at checkpoints (the locations of which are not known in advance) early or late. A Gimmick rally is typically a bit less rigid and usually involves solving puzzles of some type.

Between RMR and AMR, a handful of rallies—at least one of each type—are offered. Porsche Parade also hosts a TSD rally, and sometimes a Gimmick rally, each year.

AUTOCROSS (AX)An autocross is a competition in which

drivers navigate their cars through a course defined by orange cones, usually in a large parking lot. Top speeds are generally moderate, topping out around 40-65 MPH (no higher than second gear for many cars). Competing cars are spaced at long intervals — typically only two or three cars are on the course at the same time. Autocross is a safe way to experience high-performance driving while learning to drive your car at its limit.

Additionally, autocross is a major event at Porsche Parade.

DRIVER EDUCATION (DE)A driver education event provides

a sa fe, control led environment for high-performance driving instruction. DE offers drivers of all skill levels the opportunity to hone their driv ing skills, with the help of an experienced instructor, in a controlled, closed-course environment. In keeping with PCA philosophy, the primary emphasis at all times is on safety. A word of warning, though: the DE experience may be habit-forming!

As DE events are not racing, nor preparation for racing, lap times are not recorded. However, some DE events are followed immediately by a time trial event, which gives drivers a chance to quantify their performance. Lap times may then be used to measure personal improvement or for bragging rights amongst your peers, etc.

RMR hosts six DE’s each year at High Plains Raceway, with AMR hosting several more at the La Junta, Pueblo and (possibly in the future) Pike’s Peak International Raceway tracks.

CLUB RACEA club race is a wheel-to-wheel racing

event. A race weekend consists of a number of practice sessions and “heats” (race sessions), often involving both “sprint” and “endurance” races.

Since a Club Racing license (issued by PCA Nat iona l) i s required for competition, club racers are serious and experienced drivers. The cars they bring with them to the track can be quite impressive! As a point of interest, the PCA Club Racing program was inaugurated with the RMR-hosted “First Ever Anywhere” club race at Second Creek in 1992.

Because of the logistics involved in an event of this magnitude, a club race requires a legion of volunteers. However, it is also one of most exciting events to participate in, so be sure to sign up!

R MR host s one c lub race each autumn at High Plains Raceway which, when combined with a Driver Education event, adds up to one thrilling weekend!

NON-DRIVING EVENTSMEMBERSHIP SOCIAL

Membersh ip soc ia l s prov ide an opportunity to reconnect with old friends and meet new members. Historically, a membership meeting begins with a social hour with a cash bar, followed by the evening’s program. The content of the program varies, sometimes featuring a “slide show” from a recent event, or a guest speaker such as accomplished Speed World Challenge racer Randy Pobst.

Membership socials, unless otherwise stated, are held the first Thursday of the month. Different venues and topics will keep the meetings fresh and inviting. Watch HighGear and the RMR Web site for details. If you have any ideas for a program, talk to the Committee Chair or a Board member!

TECH SESSIONA tech session is just what it sounds

like–a session in which a technical topic is discussed. Not just for gearheads, a tech session may demonstrate practical, “do-it-yourself ” procedures such as brake bleeding. Tech sessions are usually pre sented by exper ienced Porsche technicians, many of whom are sponsors of RMR events and High Gear.

RMR hosts a few tech sessions each year, typica l ly in the “of f months” when few driving events take place. In addition, numerous tech sessions are offered at Porsche Parade. Concours d’Elegance

A concours is essentially a car show, in which conte stant s endeavor to present their cars in as close to “perfect” condition as possible. A number of judged categories usually exist, typically differentiating between types of cars (e.g. 356, Boxster) and level of preparation (“daily driver” or “full preparation” or somewhere in between). Cars sometimes may be entered as “display only,” for owners who wish to participate but not compete.

RMR participates in a handful of local concours events each year, including the annual Exotic Sports Car Show and Concours d’Elegance, benefiting United Cerebral Palsy Colorado. The annual Porsche Parade also hosts a major concours each year.

WHAT WE DOWhether your tastes are social, technical, or competitive, RMR has something for you! You can have fun in your Porsche by participating in driver education and time trials at area tracks, autocrosses, rallies, tours, tech sessions, car shows and more.
