Director’s Message

This has been a landmark year in many respects. Moving into our remarkable new Lower School was a major event, which defined the start of the school year for half of our school population. It was a challenging and logistically demanding exercise for staff and students alike but in the end was absolutely worth the effort. This building is unique in Luxembourg and in fact sits at the leading edge of educational spaces in the world of international education. Many people were instrumental in its conception and its realisation but in particular I would like to recognise the Board of Governors, the members of the Facilities Committee, our Business Manager, the Lower School Leadership and staff and our Project Managers for their contributions to the success of this major project. And, of course, we extend a special thank you to the Luxembourg government for their support . As the year progressed people grew into the facility and the building itself began to learn to manage its own complex systems and to prove itself as a truly outstanding learning facility.

As ever, it is my pleasure to express my sincere appreciation to our ISL staff members for their dedication and commitment throughout the 2013-2014 school year. Every day we see evidence of an extraordinary commitment to student learning and student success at all levels and in a Pre-School to Grade 12 school such as ours, it is absolutely obvious that success achieved at the senior levels is only possible when it is built upon a rich, stimulating, coherent platform starting in the Early Years and developing consistently from year to year.

This year our 72 full IB Diploma students achieved a remarkable 100% pass rate (compared to the world average of 79%) with two of our IB students gaining perfect scores of 45 points – a noteworthy and highly commendable achievement.

After a year of planning, development of a new workspace and the installation of new machinery and resources, Design Technology is ready to come on line and will be a significant addition to our Upper School curriculum. The introduction of Design Technology, initially at Middle School level, aims to enhance student learning through enquiry, problem solving, creative design, use of state-of-the art technologies (eventually to include robotics) along with the development of standards of accuracy, precision, following of instructions and experimentation and exploration.

Complementing the academics, our rich extra-curricular programme saw ISL students continuing to engage at a high level in a wide range of international educational forums and activities, one significant example being the Global Issues Network conference, which was once again hosted by ISL in Luxembourg and which attracted more than 330 students from 30 schools internationally. Other valuable projects included Model United Nations, AMIS band and choir events, NECIS sports competitions, Mérite Jeunesse and Adventure Racing. These along with numerous other extra-curricular activities complement our academic programme and together serve to provide our ISL students with outstanding learning opportunities and a sound preparation for life.

Our very special 50th Anniversary Year was celebrated at a range of events including a special Gala Dinner Dance, at the Mayfest, in concerts and at receptions. The student Graduation, at the prestigious Grand Theatre, was the culminating event with ISL’s first graduate, Matthew Rhodes, as a speaker and with the Prime Minister of Luxembourg as our main guest speaker.

My thanks to staff, students, my Leadership colleagues, the Board of Governors, the PTO and parents for your contributions and support for what proved to be another outstanding year.

Chris BowmanDirector

Chairman’s Notes

School year 2013-14 was a highpoint for ISL - we completed the new Lower School building on time and on budget. The opening of the building in September 2013 reflects the culmination of what was truly a team effort - our architects and project managers, the Facilities Commitee, the Leadership Team, staff, teachers and even students worked together to ensure that the project was finalised successfully. We have received significant praise from local and national government officials as well as education experts in Europe and North America. We should feel proud of this very significant accomplishment. This past school year was also the last year of service at the Board level for Roger Barker and other Board trustees and a number of teachers and staff. We thank them for their selfless contribution to and love of ISL. We selected Nicki Crush to become our new Director when Chris Bowman retires in June 2015. Our new Board members, Leadership Team, teachers, staff and students will continue to enrich our educational and cultural fabric. We have many challenges ahead of us but we have a very experienced and talented team that will help us meet them with confidence and hope. Whether you are a student, teacher, parent, staff member or just a friend of ISL, please continue doing your part to take us to new educational, cultural and personal heights.

William JonesChairman of the Board

As a non-profit organisation, the International School of Luxembourg relies on donations to continue to develop as a leading international school within Europe. The Friends of ISL is an annual request to our community to make gifts to the school which have an immediate and direct benefit to each student and faculty member. Donations allow us to continuously invest in, strengthen, and sustain the extraordinary opportunities that define an ISL education.

ISL sincerely thanks the following individuals and companies for their generous support during the 2013-2014 school year:

50th Anniversary Gala

On Friday, March 7, 2014, 260 members of the ISL community gathered to celebrate 50 years of ISL at the historic Cercle Cité building in downtown Luxembourg. The elegant black-tie evening raised a record breaking 40.000 EUR which directly benefited the Upper School Auditorium light and sound renovation project.

The 50th anniversary Gala would not have been possible without the tireless efforts of the following individuals: Arnita Hallerström and Michelle Unger, Co-Chairs, and committee members: Beth DeLuca, Maja Gunnarsdottir, Björg Gunnsteinsdottir, Bea Ludovicy, Margot Parra, Myriam Penning-Sax, and Kelly Weber-Jones.
