What Media Server/product was being sold at the �me of you star�ng at Green Hippo?

[Nigel Sadler] The Hippo�zer Lite and Hippo�zer Pro

Favourite event that Green Hippo has worked on?

[Nigel Sadler] The Oscars... because it’s the Oscars (obviously!), it has an incredible feeling when you are there because you feel so privileged to be

part of it. I don’t normally get star struck – but you can’t help it at the Oscars.

Everything has to be 100% perfect – no mistakes can happen and the number of viewers makes it a really scary task every �me.

Favourite trip or experience with Green Hippo

[Nigel Sadler] In the very early days of Green Hippo, I was involved in a large fes�val at Alexandra Palace where the video screens were driven by

Hippo�zer. At around 1:00am in the morning the screen on the main stage went black – we tried to discover what had gone wrong, it turned out that

there was a join between two cables that sent the video signal from the front of house to the back screen, but the join had broken and it was flown

in the roof of Alexandra palace so was impossible to fix.

We quickly grabbed the Hippo and a screen and dragged it over to the Videoprocessor that was under a piece of staging that the DJ was standing

on on the stage – I set up the system there and operated the rest of the show on my back, upside down underneath the DJ, with only 1 foot high of

space and no view of the main screen – I had one of my colleagues shou�ng at me to tell me what was appearing on the screen at any one moment, I

was under there for about 2 more hours!

How many countries have you visited with Green Hippo?

[Nigel Sadler] 50+ Really can’t count – I have been to most countries.

[Sean Westgate] The first products we made were the IGS (Interac�ve Graphics Servers) version 1 -4. A�er that the Hippo�zer Brand was born. And

yes – there was a v1. It didn’t last very long though before version 2 superseded it and became a commercial success.


[Sean Westgate] That would have been the Beatles show “Love” in Las Vegas premiering in 2006. It was out first big project with racks full of servers driving 32 projectors. There was a so�edge blended 360 degree screen

going all the way around the circular stage and many other screens dropping in and out.


[Sean Westgate] Was probably on the same job. Due to the complicated nature of the show there was li�le �me during the day to do any server

updates and maintenance, so I flew out from the UK and stayed in Vegas for a week but completely staying in UK �me as I only worked night shi�s.

Because most casinos in Vegas have no windows, you can’t really tell what �me it is anyway, so I had a very comfortable �me there and no jetlag

coming back!


[Sean Westgate] Not too many, back and forth to the US quite a bit and all over Europe, so France, Germany, Switzerland, Netherlands, Sweden,

Finland and probably some more…

[Tom Etra] When I started I was suppor�ng V2 Express, Stage and HD. 6 Months later we released V3 and the real fun began.


[Tom Etra] Eurovision 2007. Having worked at Green Hippo for li�le under a year. V3’s first ou�ng was looking like it would be the biggest project we had

done to date. We were using beta version of V3 and s�ll coming across bugs. The infamous disappearing media map was a good one. James Heron

(Co-founder) called me late Friday evening and told me I need to be in Helsinki early Monday morning to support Eurovision. 1 year out of Uni and

I was media server support for Eurovision. I took an early flight Monday morning and landed in Helsinki where I had a call from an annoyed Sean Westgate asking me why I was late we had lot of work to do. I s�ll have a mental image of myself si�ng in the airport before passport control, on a plas�c chair looking at the plane I have just got of trying to explain to Sean

where I was.

Ola Melzig was the produc�on manager. He is a great character and when he no�ced I was only 20 on my passport I was the subject of friendly banter

for the two weeks I was there. The meal tokens were handed out for the next 2 weeks, which I lost within 10 minutes. There is a story including a hot

tub and seal fat but it’s not true. The next two weeks were a real journey.


[Tom Etra] Working support we won the contract for Wintuk at Maddison Square Gardens. Rachael Cady was appointed media server programmer.

Using The V3 �meline Rachael had many 1000’s of tracks to programme on the limited �meline. I spent around a month fault finding a problem. Trying

to reproduce Rachael’s problem. Only to find out she wasn’t running components on a ZooKeeper. Internally we did not know this could be done

and was a revela�on when we understood what she was doing.


[Tom Etra] I think about 40 – 50 countries. A few highlights include; Mexico, South Africa, Lebanon, Egypt, Russia, Latvia, Dubai, Hong Kong, and Japan.

[Suzy Stenning] GrassHopper was my favourite product when I started but we also sold cri�ers and V3 HD’s in the new chassis.


[Suzy Stenning] I went to visit the Blue Man Group in Germany because there was some issues with �mecode, we fixed the issues very quickly, but it

was very interes�ng to see how it works. I got to spend a few days with them and fully understand how they perform. It was great to be a part of

their family for a short period of �me.


[Suzy Stenning] It was my birthday and I was in Germany with Zep Mouris (Hippo�zer Product Manager), we met up with a client and he showed us

around Miniature Wonderland, (backstage tour) it was incredible. We then had a design mee�ng with him on how he could go further with Hippo�zer. It was then so late and most of the places for food were shut so we spent ages wandering round looking for a birthday dinner, eventually a�er many

a�empts we found a restaurant that was open.


[Suzy Stenning] A lot, mostly Europe but I have also visited South Africa which was loads of fun. I had the opportunity to go on a Safari during my

trip and saw everything from rhinos to lions. The baby elephants were the best.

[Ryan Brown] It was all Hippo�zer V3. We had HDs, GrassHoppers and Cri�ers. The big feature focus was Uber-Pan which enabled us to sync lots of

systems into a single canvas – it was ground-breaking at the �me.


[Ryan Brown] Probably my favourite gig to work on was a German Pop-Idol show that was set in an ac�ve salt mine.

The show was in a huge cavern 500m underground. Just ge�ng to the cavern took a 10 minute elevator ride and then a 5km drive through the mine. We had to evacuate to the surface at every lunch break because

explosions further in the mine rendered the air toxic in our room. (A worker was assigned to each group of us, the worker wore a special device that

would tell him if the air was toxic. If that alarm went off our instruc�on was to try to keep up with him as he ran). In our off-�me we got to drive around

the mine with the locals who showed us a 5m wide salt crystal s�ll where they had found it: nearly a kilometre underground.


[Ryan Brown] Probably the whole company playing laser tag on Osea island on a company get-away. We split into two teams and played capture the flag laser tag. Where our normally prim and proper non-execu�ve director did a very good job as drill sergeant devising all sorts of manoeuvres to outsmart

our opponents.


[Ryan Brown] More than I can count.

[Millicent Rioux] Hippo�zer V2 ––Stage , HD and Express.


[Millicent Rioux] PLASA 2014. We put on a training day in the office for our Distributors (23+) at the �me, launching the V4 range at the same �me to

make a successful tradeshow.


[Millicent Rioux] Devcon/Hotcon 2013 at Knowle Manor in Somerset.

During our stay there, we had a whole day outdoor ac�vity, it was a Treasure hunt, we were all given a packed lunch. We also the chance to visit the surroundings and the Minehead Heritage steam railway terminus café.
