Most Americans will be taking it easy on the Fourth of July — but Benjamin

Franklin will be hard at work like he always is.

Franklin - a 45-year-old Jamaican who just happens to share a name with the

fabled “First American” — will sell DVDs and records at his unnamed Harlem

storefront, a hard-working spirit that the inventor of bifocals and the editor of 

the Declaration of Independence would appreciate.

“I’m a workaholic,” said the living Franklin, a father of five, ages 8 to 18.

“Some people say it’s all about the Benjamins,” Franklin added, referring to the

$100 bill that has his namesake’s face on it. “Nothing more.”

The original Franklin and his successor could not have had different

upbringings. Founding Father Franklin was born in Boston and moved to

Philadelphia when he was 17 to become an author and printer. He went on to

seduce half of Europe, establish one of the first volunteer firefighting

companies in the nation and experiment with a famous lightning bolt.

Today’s Franklin moved to the Bronx 17 years ago not knowing his name

would open doors — or at least widen eyes.
