CELEBRATE THE CALABASAS SENIOR CENTER’S FIRST BIRTHDAY WITH US! We’re having a celebration for the Calabasas Senior Center’s First Birthday! You’re invited to the party on Saturday, June 24th from 2:00 to 4:00 pm. Popular stand-up comedian and KNBC-TV weathercaster Fritz Coleman will headline the event and entertain us with his humorous and timely presentation. We will begin the celebration in Founders Hall, located behind the Calabasas Library. City of Calabasas dignitaries, staff and volunteers will gather together to blow out the candles on our First Birthday cake, guide visitors through the Calabasas Senior Center, and describe the many classes, lectures, excursions, and special interest clubs offered at the facility. Stay and play billiards, ping pong, games and enjoy the patio and putting green. We hope to see you at our celebration. We’re having a celebration for the Calabasas Senior Center’s First Birthday!

You’re invited to the party on Saturday, June 24th from 2:00 to 4:00 pm. Popular stand-up comedian and KNBC-TV weathercaster Fritz Coleman will headline the event and entertain us with his humorous and timely presentation. We will begin the celebration in Founders Hall, located behind the Calabasas Library.

City of Calabasas dignitaries, staff and volunteers will gather together to blow out the candles on our First Birthday cake, guide visitors through the Calabasas Senior Center, and describe the many classes, lectures, excursions, and special interest clubs off ered at the facility. THE LIFE OF CHARLIE COOKEDr. Mary Contini Gordon, writer of local histories, will talk about the long lasting impact in Southern California of Indian leader, Charlie Cooke, and some of his cohorts who lived in the locality and worked with leadership of many communities including Calabasas’ founding mayor, Dennis Washburn. She will tell of the collaborative leadership of this cowboy, truck-driver, and war veteran on behalf of Indian heritages, ancient sites, modern-day national and state parks, and promotion of conservation efforts at sites throughout Southern California. Dennis Washburn will add to the story with many specifics about Charlie, also known as the Chumash Chief TIQ SLO’W, in his quest to revitalize Native American culture, to encourage responsible development, and to save areas that became park sites in the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation area which stretches from Griffith Park to Point Mugu. Photos and specially prepared maps will be part of the presentation.

THAT PESKY BLADDER AND WHAT YOU CAN DO ABOUT ITAccording to the Center for Disease Control over 50% of people over 65, both men and women, have problems with their bladders, including overactive bladder, urge incontinence, as well as urinary retention. This problem can be feel embarrassing and significantly affect people’s quality of life (how many people do you know who can point out every bathroom on the way home?). Bladder health should start early and non-pharmacological methods of bladder control should be the bedrock of treatment. We will cover how our bladder changes with age, the worrisome symptoms that should be checked out right away, common treatments and preventative care to lessen the effect of bladder problems on our quality of life.

The animals are in desperate need to find a safe way to cross the 101 and 405 freeways so they can expand their territory into the Simi Hills, Santa Susana Mountains and beyond. Learn how to be a good neighbor to a mountain lion and join the campaign to build the largest wildlife crossing in the country at Liberty Canyon. Did you know that many falls resulting in bone fractures are a result of medication effects? Dr. Magda is a Geriatric Medicine specialist who will present some of the most commonly prescribed drugs and the side effects you want to watch out for. Many people do not know that as we get older, our bodies and the ways in which pharmaceuticals affect them, change, yet few medications are adjusted with this in mind. The goal of this talk is to arm you with the information you need when talking with your physicians, so you can take charge of your health.

AB LAB/STRETCHStrong abdominals, good core strength, and flexibility are crucial for our general overall well-being! A strong mid-section and good flexibility are the key ingredients to maintaining an active life style, preventing injuries, and having good posture! This class offers the best of both worlds!! You will go through a wide variety, including passive to moderate to advanced styles, of ab exercises to tone and strengthen the mid-section (aka ABS). Then you will take a gentle and relaxing journey of full body stretches for your reward!!! The first 25 minutes will consist of all levels of various abdominal exercises which are all very “back friendly”. No full sit ups allowed! The last 30 minutes of the class will offer relaxing and gentle stretches to get the kinks out. Kind of like hitting the “re-start” button for the body! Your instructor prides herself in being able to adjust all the exercises to your level and is able to offer modifications as needed to the individual student. Please note to bring your own yoga mat. ACRYLIC PAINTINGAcrylics are actually a great medium for beginners to learn, because it is such a forgiving medium. Acrylics are water-based, which means that unlike oil paints, they can be thinned with water and cleaned with water. CULINARY ARTS INSTITUTE MISSION COLLEGE TOUR AND FOUR-COURSE GOURMET LUNCH Something new and exciting! We are so fortunate to have this award winning Culinary Institute at Los Angeles Mission College. Although this architecturally beautiful building consists of three stories in 85,000 square feet, we will be taking a tour of the lower level which has five kitchens: the Main Modular Kitchen (5,000 square feet,) Pastry Lab, Bake Shop, Garde Manger Kitchen, which is a cool room for storing foods and for preparing certain dishes, and a Butcher Shop. The main level houses their Main Production Kitchen, and the upper level, classrooms and demonstration Tiered Classroom Kitchen. There are currently over 600 students enrolled in this impressive program.*The building has highly polished concrete floors so please wear non-slip (non-leather) shoes. The City’s red trolley will bring tour participants past landmarks related to the old west, early moviemaking, the roaring 1920’s, the suburban 1960’s and more. Knowledgeable docents will share local facts, legend and lore at such points of interest as, Old Town Calabasas, Bird Streets, Calabasas Pet Cemetery plus more. The Nix Collection of Automated Musical Instruments began in 1983 with Frank and Shirley Nix’s purchase of a few antique music boxes. JULY 4TH FIREWORKS SPECTACULAR WITH PENTATONIX Join us once again as we continue our annual tradition of celebrating Independence Day at the legendary Hollywood Bowl. Our evening under the stars will feature both popular and patriotic music together with the Bowl’s famous fireworks. Headlining this year is the Grammy winning a cappela group, Pentatonix. Their career skyrocketed when they won the 2011 NBC competition, “The Sing-Off.” Known for their pop-inspired take on classics, this 5 person group uses no instruments and relies on only their voices to create melodic arrangements of beloved songs such as the Leonard Cohen classic “Hallelujah.” The Hollywood Bowl Orchestra will perform patriotic classics and marches led by Principal Conductor, Thomas Wilkins. POLO AND TOUR WILL ROGERS STATE PARK Experience polo, "the game of kings," at Will Rogers State Park, originally the private estate of famed humorist Will Rogers, and now the only remaining polo field in Los Angeles. After a short bus ride to breezy Pacific Palisades, have a guided tour of the historic ranch buildings and visitor center, and view a film on the life of Will Rogers. Then get a quick course on the rules of polo, meet some of the players and polo ponies and watch the exciting game while picnicking on the shady side of the field, toasting the goals with champagne. Walking shoes are recommended due to uneven ground and so you can participate in the divot stomping, where you get to go on the field and push the unearthed clogs of grass back into the ground, in centuries-old polo tradition.

SENIOR DAY AT THE VENTURA COUNTY FAIR So much to do, so much to see, and it’s FREE! Breathe in the fresh sea air while perusing your choices. There are so many great exhibits on display in these buildings: Agriculture, Floriculture, Gems and minerals, Home Arts, and Photography. How about cooking demonstrations, pig races or examining the latest gadgets? Hungry? Try a smoked turkey Leg, some barbeque, or a roasted ear of corn slathered in your choice of condiments. There’s always cotton candy! The concert starts early on this day, 1 PM so find the grandstand, rest your feet, and enjoy some good music which is always geared toward our age group. Bring a jacket just in case. This is pure Americana!
