CELEBRATE 125 YEARS OF THEBOSTON POPS!Dear Friends,
In 1885, the founding father of the Boston Symphony
Orchestra, Henry Lee Higginson, had a rather radical idea:
that there was room on the docket of this august institution
for concerts of a different sort—concerts played at a high
artistic level but with the emphasis on accessibility and
entertainment. Out of this revolutionary notion was born
a uniquely American institution—the Boston Pops. Here
we are now—125 seasons, twenty conductors, hundreds
of recordings, tours, and television shows, thousands of
concerts, and untold millions of audience members later.
To celebrate this landmark anniversary season, we continue
Arthur Fiedler’s legacy of presenting the timeless music
of yesteryear with the timely music of today. Hear special
tributes to legendary artists Duke Ellington, Cole Porter, Ray
Charles, Richard Rodgers, and Oscar Hammerstein; experi-
ence musical icons Dave Brubeck and Doc Severinsen; relive
the 1960s with Maureen McGovern and Arlo Guthrie; see the
debuts of young artists Josh Ritter and Ozomatli. Beloved
annual shows return, including Gospel Night with Charles
Floyd and Hooray for Hollywood with Boston Pops Laureate
Conductor John Williams. Our Stars and Stripes concerts fea-
ture the premiere of “The Dream Lives On: A Portrait of the
Kennedy Brothers” by Peter Boyer (Ellis Island) and Lynn
Ahrens (Ragtime), honoring the legacy of Massachusetts
native sons John, Robert, and Edward Kennedy.
We are “America’s Orchestra,” but we are also Boston’s—as
much a part of the city as the Red Sox, the Swan Boats, and
the Boston Marathon. Reserve your tickets soon to share in
the celebration and tradition of the Boston Pops.
Best Regards,
Celebrate 125 Years!
