Florence Symphony2013-14 Season

From the Music Director

Next season marks my tenth year as Music Director of the FlorenceSymphony Orchestra. Things have certainly changed in the past fewyears - fantastic musicians, fantastic performing arts center andfantastic support from the audience members!

The season starts with the Overture to Rienzi, from Richard Wagner born200 years ago, in 1813. Then, the brilliant cellist Wesley Baldwin willperform Tchaikovsky’s Variations on a Rococo Theme, followed by Mathisder Maler by Paul Hindemith.

In November, we will honor our Veterans with Summon the Heroes, byJohn Williams. The very beautiful Kirsten Chavez will sing songs fromDes Knaben Wunderhorn, by Gustav Mahler. She is a rising star on theinternational opera and concert stage very much in demand.

Come celebrate the Holiday Season in December with us. We will haveTraditional and Pops Holiday music with a sing-a-long for everyone.

The New Year features young performers and some older standards ofthe repertoire. Alexandra du Bois is a young American composer and wewill perform her Fanfare for Orchestra. FSO’s own principal Clarinet,Jennifer Brown, will be our soloist, playing Aaron Copland’s Concerto forClarinet. This piece was written for Benny Goodman and featureselements of jazz and Americana. We will finish the evening with thebeautiful 6th symphony by Tchaikovsky. In March we will have theconcerto competition winners perform with the FSO. This season we willfeature young violin soloist from the area. We end the season with somefun and unusual works. The “Kindersymphonie “ or “Toy symphony”from Haydn will feature some special guests. Patricia Burkett and RustyRay will give us the “Newscaster” version of “Peter and the Wolf”. Theevening will end with some dance music by Dmitri Shostakovich showinghis lighter side of his music.

Overall—a little something for everyone and works you might not know. So, join us next season for many fantastic evenings of music with theFlorence Symphony Orchestra.

See you on the downbeat!
