CEF HELPS SUPPORT ELI LILLY INCUBATOR CHALLENGE

As part of a four-way partnership between pharmaceutical

giant, Eli Lilly; InnoCentive, an innovation solution provid-

er; the Centennial School District and the Centennial Educa-

tion Foundation, six students from William Tennent High

School participated in a “shark tank” activity to help solve

real life problems.

Funded by Eli Lilly in conjunction with CEF, the competition

was an opportunity for students to gain real-world experi-

ences in the research and development field in science. The

students participated in an “incubator” think tank project with

researchers from Lilly and with WTHS faculty. Students

learned to apply multi-step processes involved in research

and in the development of new concepts and products.

The two teams of students from WTHS had to create a solution

for simulating the Trial Experience. They had to develop an im-

mersive, highly illustrative experience for patients that help

them simulate what it means to be in a specific clinical trial.

The six students attended the Medicine X Conference at Stanford University in Palo Alto, Cali-

fornia.

The creation of this partnership could not have happened without the extra effort of WTHS Sci-

ence teachers, Steve Beal and Ignacio Jayo, Art teacher, Rena Friedant, Partnerships and Affili-

ations Coordinator, Dr. Albert Catarro, WTHS Principal, Dr. Dennis Best, Assistant Superinten-

dent, Dr. Jennifer Polinchock and the CEF Board of Directors.

PARTNERSHIP PROGRAMS

CEF is taking part of this issue to highlight some of our partnership programs. Future editions of this newsletter will continue to showcase those businesses and organizations who have taken that extra step to help support our student programs.

Ann’s Choice - Erickson

Before any buildings were constructed, before any residents arrived, Ann’s Choice

was ready to partner with CEF to support our student programs. The Erickson Cor-

poration has supported our work for over a decade with direct grant funding, vol-

unteer support and the hosting of our annual Awards and Recognition Breakfast.

Their support has helped us not only gain recognition, but has allowed us to expand

the kinds of grant programs we can offer to our students. Former CEF President,

JoAnn Zonderwyk continues to serve CEF and the Ann’s Choice community as a

health care counselor.

Quaint Oak Bank

CEO and President, Robert T. Strong has been a staunch supporter of education for

many years. Former CEF President, Ron Froggatt joined forces with Robert over 10

years ago to provide support to CEF. Quaint Oak has supported our fundraising cam-

paigns, provided grant funding each year and been a part of the Educational Improve-

ment Tax Credit program. CEF President, Bob Phillips, also serves as Chairman of the

Board with Quaint Oak Bank.

W. Bruce Beaton Insurance Agency

Bruce Beaton has been a CEF supporter and Board Member for more

than 10 years. The support of the Beaton Agency comes in many forms from

fundraisers and event sponsorships to grant awards and ticket donations.

Bruce has been active on our events and publicity committee and has

served as President of CEF.

CEF MEMBER PROFILE

We would like to welcome our newest CEF Board member, Debbie Zweitzig.

She taught a total of 32 years starting in Lebanon, PA followed by 21 years in Centennial. She retired in June, 2015. Debbie has been married to her husband, Jerry (WTHS 1965) for over 46 years. They are parents to Cheryl, Bruce and William and have four grandchildren. She enjoys music, reading, scrapbooking and am active in our church. She also has the pleasure of continuing to help children learn by volunteering at Davis Elementary School, being an educator at the Lenape Village of Churchville Nature Center, volun-teering at Craven Hall, and tutoring several ESL students from surrounding school districts.

“I am proud to have the opportunity to serve on the CEF Board because I believe in providing the very best for our students and faculty and in engaging community support to meet these goals.”

I just wanted to thank you for your ongoing support of the Lilly—Tennent Challenge. With-

out your support the six of us would have never gained such a life-changing experience.

This challenge taught me so much more than any classroom lecture could ever offer. Not

only did I gain a new perspective of the business and medical fields, but I learned to pro-

mote myself and my ideas to other people. After the internship, I felt significantly more

prepared for the professional world. So again, I really just wanted to thank you and the

entire Centennial Education Foundation for backing us throughout the process.

Sincerely,

Jocelyn George—William Tennent High School

CELEBRATING 20 YEARS! 1997--2017

Next year CEF is celebrating 20 years of providing support to our students through grant programs.

In this and upcoming issues of our newsletter we will highlight some of the history and achievements that we have had

over that time. CEF got its start in 1997, but did not award their first grants until the spring of 1998. The total amount

awarded that first year was $2403. Here is a list of the original CEF Board of Directors.
