Vol. 1 No. 2

Word from the Principal

Dear Reader,

Welcome to the first issue of the CEDAT Newsletter. The College of Engineering, Design, Art and Technology (CEDAT) has been formed as a result of a merger of the former Faculty of Technol-ogy and the Margaret Trowel School of Fine and Industrial Arts (MTSIFA). This is a very strong merger, which brings together some of the finest minds in this Country. With the functional and utilitarian thinking of the engineers and related disci-plines, as well as the creativity of the fine artists and architects, this merger has produced a formidable innovative force at Makerere University.

Through this newsletter, CEDAT will strive to inform her stakeholders on events and opportuni-ties within the College, at Makerere and beyond. We live in an era that punishes those that are shy to exploit the power of information. For a long time, researchers and students in CEDAT have been engaged in many innovative projects, which often remain within the confines of the authors’ knowledge. Through this newsletter, we will ensure that every innovation that is developed at CEDAT becomes public knowledge, for we are not only a public institution, but an institution that is expected to lead the way in engineering and technology innovation in our beloved Country.

The success of the newsletter will depend on the contributions that are made by members of staff and students of CEDAT, as well as the other stakeholders. This is an opportunity for all the stakeholders to reach out to the public and demonstrate the potential that this institution holds for the development of Uganda and the region.

It is my hope, that the newsletter will also be a forum for social interaction among CEDAT stakeholders. I congratulate the editorial; team upon this innovation and wish them success in this noble cause.

The Commonwealth Association of Architects (CAA) on 25th May 2011 granted full accreditation to the Bachelor of Architecture programme. The CAA accreditation is the most prestigious accreditation of architecture programmes internationally and has an established multilateral system for the validation of courses in architecture.

The accreditation follows an inspection of the college by a seven-man team from the CAA on Monday which was engaged in various exercises aimed at accessing the programme. The team recommended more funding for research so that staff can carry out research and be more knowledgeable.

The title: SCULPTURAL FIGURES REFLECTED ON DAILY EXPERIENCES. The exhibition runs until August 21, 2011. Dr Nabulime’s works are mainly figurative and bear lightness and joy in the sculptural expressions despite their heavy material while showing deep understanding of people’s physical appearances and open or hidden emotions. She introduces several groups of work. At large, she differentiates three series; clay/terracotta sculptures, two dimensional relief sculptures and three dimensional sculptures. The clay sculptures fulfil a twofold purpose being preliminary studies for larger wood sculptures and standalone pieces. The group of relief sculptures in wood is further divided into four subgroups of different topics and materials; faces, African designs and patterns and two groups of children. The large three dimensional sculptures are created from huge wood logs. Additionally she uses copper, nails, bark cloth, cans, colours and textiles to emphasise ideas. Dr Nabulime uses many found or waste materials for her sculptures and hence promotes environmental consciousness and recycling of resources in the arts.

Letter from an Irish Mother to her SonDear Son, Just a few lines to let you know I’m still alive. I’m writing this letter slowly because I know you can’t read fast. We are all do-ing very well. You won’t recognise the house when you get home - we have moved. Your dad read in the newspaper that most accidents hap-pen within 20 miles from your home, so we moved. I won’t be able to send you the address because the last Irish family that lived here took the house numbers when they moved so that they wouldn’t have to change their address. This place is really nice. It even has a washing machine. I’m not sure it works so well though: last week I put a load in and pulled the chain and haven’t seen them since. Your father’s got a really good job now. He’s got 500 men under him. He’s cutting the grass at the cemetery. Your sister Mary had a baby this morning but I haven’t found out if it’s a boy or a girl, so I don’t know whether you are an auntie or an uncle.

Your brother Tom is still in the army. He’s only been there a short while and they’ve already made him a court martial! Your Uncle Patrick drowned last week in a vat of whiskey in the Dublin Brewery. Some of his workmates tried to save him but he fought them off bravely. They cre-mated him and it took three days to put out the fire. I’m sorry to say that your cousin Seamus was arrested while riding his bicycle last week. They are charging him with dope peddling. I went to the doctor on Thursday and your father went with me. The doctor put a small tube in my mouth and told me not to talk for ten minutes. Your father offered to buy it from him. The weather isn’t bad here. It only rained twice this week, first for three days and then for four days. Monday was so windy one of the chickens laid the same egg four times. We had a letter from the under-taker. He said if the last payment on your Grand-mother’s plot wasn’t paid in seven days, up she comes.

About that coat you wanted me to send you, your Uncle Stanley said it would be too heavy to send in the mail with the but-tons on, so we cut them off and put them in the pockets. John locked his keys in the car yesterday. We were really worried because it took him two hours to get me and your father out. Three of your friends went off a bridge in a pick-up truck. Ralph was driving. He rolled down the window and swam to safety. Your other two friends were in back. They drowned because they couldn’t get the tailgate down. There isn’t much more news at this time. Nothing much has happened. Your loving Mum P.S. I was going to send you some money but I had already sealed the envelope.

Laugh a little…
