“I took the Rangeley 15 I finished last April to the Madisonville LA Wooden Boat Festival. She was awarded first

place in the skiff/row class. Then they had the choice awards, where all the skippers vote for the best on water and best on

land according to where it’s displayed. The Rangeley won best on land. Thanks again for making the Rangeley available to the

strip builder, it is such a wonderful boat.” Clayton Plunkett

“Our project is complete and the maiden voyage of the Abenaki was an absolute success. My son and I thoroughly enjoyed this project and thank you for your help throughout the process. Thanks again.” Tom Furgal

Ric Smith built the Rangeley 15 first, then the Excursion kayak for his wife; he worked out a way to transport both!

“Here’s a photo of our White Guide from a 10-day Quetico trip a few summers

ago. This was our three-generation building crew. It was also recently

commissioned for a commercial here in Austin as it won out over a number of

other wood canoes. Thanks.” Jamie Estep

“I am so pleased with theVoyager. It does paddle very nicely. For a canoe, it does particularly well into the wind (remains balanced). And, it will be stable enough to fish from. Thank you so much for your design.” Lew Lott

We Engineer Kits!A “kit” is simply a collection of materials that will facilitate your boat building project. You could purchase plans and a book and build a boat by gathering all the materials yourself. However, if you purchase a kit from us you will save time, minimize frustration, and gain quality. We build prototypes of the boat designs that we sell as kits so we know what you will need to complete a top quality canoe, kayak, or rowing boat. We are constantly updating our kits as we work out better methods or research new materials. If you are new to stripbuilding and/or boatbuilding we urge you to read a couple of books and view our Fiberglassing or Stripbuilding Videos. The Pre-Kit Package has been created so that you can review the plans, book, and video before you commit to the process. Reviewing these materials may help you decide how to proceed.

Why Should I Buy from the Newfound Woodworks? We will give you the best quality materials at a reasonable cost. If you are comparing us to another kit manufacturer, make sure you compare equal materials. We will customize your kit to fit your needs and abilities. Sometimes customers want to make some items themselves and purchase others. Newfound Woodworks specializes in milling the highest quality cove and bead strips available. While cutting 1/4” thick pieces off the side of a board and putting a cove and bead on each edge may not seem difficult, high quality strips require the best raw materials, precision milling and good quality control. Our strips are cut from the highest quality lumber. We take the extra effort to assure all the strips are vertical grained. This produces strips that plane and sand more easily than flat-grained wood. Boats made with vertical grain strips produce a smoother, more beautiful finish.

Technical SupportWhen you purchase materials from us you are not abandoned. If you have any questions or problems we will help you. Please feel free to call us or email ([email protected]). We would rather spend the time helping you get it right, and have you happy, than have you make mistakes and get a boat you are not proud of. Email is convenient because you can print out a copy of the answer, and since we can take a little time to think about it, our answers via email will probably be better.

Newfound Woodworks OnlineAt www.newfound.com you will find tips and techniques; links to other related sites; and the latest news about what we are up to at the Newfound Woodworks. You will also find up-to-date pricing on our kits, plans, boats, materials, tools, accessories and more.

ShippingStrips, gunwales, and long materials require special packaging. If you do not yet have a strongback, our wooden shipping crate can be converted into one. Otherwise, we will package the strips in cardboard. We have found this to provide plenty of protection. See our website for pricing on these packaging options. Long packages must ship by common carrier truck. Common carrier rates depend on weight and distance. Please call or email us for an estimate. Most kits can be shipped within a few days. Smaller packages (up to 8') are shipped by FedEx Ground. We need an accurate street address for the quickest shipment. Books and small tools can be shipped via US Mail. You can also pick up your order at our shop. Please call ahead so we can have your order ready when you get here.

Stop By Our ShopWe generally have several boats in various stages of construction at our shop. Seeing a boat being built is probably the best way to get a feel for how they go together. Stop in for a visit, but please call or email ahead to make sure we are available. We are open most weekdays from 8 a.m. till 5 p.m. and by appointment on weekends.

What is Strip Building?Strip-build, cedar-strip, cedar strip/epoxy, or wood strip all refer to the same technique for building a boat. This method lends itself readily to canoes, kayaks, and small rowing boats. Thin strips of wood are edge glued together around temporary forms, faired, and covered inside and out with epoxy and fiberglass cloth. These are really wood cored fiberglass boats; the epoxy and fiberglass are the strength and protection and the wood core is the shape and beauty. Cedar strip/epoxy boats require much less maintenance than traditional wood boats; a new coat of varnish for UV protection every few years will keep your canoe or kayak looking like new.

What is the Hybrid Construction Method? We really like strip building, the appearance of strips, and the level of creativity that you can achieve when using strips. However, a plywood boat can be assembled with fewer parts and therefore is less costly to produce and less time consuming to create. We now offer Stitch n Glue and Hybrid Kayak Kits, which combine the beauty of a cedar strip deck with the utility of a plywood hull. We think this construction method combines the best attributes of both Stitch n Glue and strip building construction. The hybrid method is economical and efficient, and retains the beauty and creativity of a cedar strip deck.

What is Stitch n Glue? The Stitch n Glue boat construction method uses panels of marine plywood temporarily held together (stitched) with copper wire, glued with epoxy and fiberglassed to achieve various hull shapes. This type of construction has been used to build the simplest dinghies to large cabin cruisers. The shape of the panels of plywood determine the eventual shape of the boat. Marine CAD programs have allowed designers to produce very efficient, beautiful kayaks using 4 mm Okoume marine plywood to achieve amazing hull shapes. All of our plywood kits include hull brackets that allow you to make sure your hull conforms to the correct design shape.

A Hybrid TrekkerExclusive to Newfound Woodworks: beveled plywood panels and pre-drilled wire holes

We cut all of our forms on our own CNC router in order to maintain control of quality. We also mill a 1/4” x 1/4” groove 1/2” from the edge of the form so that you can build without staples simply by using spring clamps at each station.

This shows typ-ical stapleless construct ion using spring clamps. No spe-cial fixtures are required.

We supply okoume plywood panels with wire holes drilled, locking “puzzle part joints” cut precisely, and inside edges of mating panels pre-beveled. We do this to promote quality construction and save you time.

A close-up of the 45-degree bevel provided for you. This will save time in construction because you won't have to bevel this inner corner or fill the gap on the outside if you choose not to bevel.

This shows how your locking joints will align your panels to turn 8' lengths into 16' lengths.

Note that even though we call the above groupings of materials “KITS,” you can really purchase any materials you want. If you email us [email protected] or call us at 603-744-6872 we can provide a quote that will be a line item list of all the materials you would get. Since we don’t pre-assemble kits, you can customize your kit to suit you own situation.

KitsDon’t see a design you like?We can produce a materials package for any strip built boat. Email us ([email protected]) with the design name and we will create a quote.

If you are new to strip building, you will need the “Pre-Kit” in addition to a kit.

What’s in a “Pre-Kit”?Cedar Strip Building DVD and Applying Fiberglass and Epoxy DVD, produced by The Newfound Woodworks, Inc. and a book specific to the type of boat you are building. You can get the Pre-Kit first and then decide on a specific canoe, kayak, or rowboat design. The book and videos will give you a good idea of what is involved and become your reference when building. The Pre-Kit does not include plans for a boat. It is meant as a generalized informational package that will allow you to review the process without spending a lot of time or money.

What’s in a “Kit”?Canoes: Plans, Construction Notes, CNC cut forms with clamping groove, cedar strips, stem materials, full length gunwales, yoke, seats, decks, fiberglass, epoxy, application supplies, and varnish.

Strip Kayaks: Plans, Construction Notes, CNC cut forms with Ladder LOC strongback system, cedar strips, stem materials, sheer clamps, coaming ring, seat/backband, footbraces, deckline material, bulkheads, fiberglass, epoxy, application supplies, and varnish.

Row Boats: Plans, Construction Notes, CNC cut forms with clamping groove, cedar strips, stem materials, full length gunwales, transom materials, seat materials, deck with coaming, fiberglass, epoxy, application supplies, and varnish.

Hybrid Kayaks: Plan sheet, Construction Notes, Fiberglassing DVD, 50% western red cedar, 50% northern white cedar strips (8’ lengths), pre-cut plywood panels with beveled edges, wire holes, and locking butt joints, Ladder LOC deck form assembly, sheer clamps, coaming ring with build up, footbraces, seat/backband, deckline materials, hatch material/hardware, bulkheads, hull frames, fiberglass, epoxy, application supplies, and varnish.”

FAQ:Is the strongback included in the ‘kit’? The strongback isn’t included but the plywood shipping container (6” x 8” x 19’) is engineered so it could be used for your strongback. If you are picking a kit up from our shop you obviously wouldn’t need a shipping container but we could make the strongback for you if you don’t have that capability.

Do I have to purchase a complete kit? No, you can individually purchase any materials necessary to make your strip canoe, kayak, or rowing boat. However, if you purchase all the materials at once (a ‘kit’) then you will get a kit discount and you could save money on shipping costs.

Do I need a Pre-Kit? If you have built a strip boat before you may not need the Pre-Kit. On the other hand, even experienced builders have benefitted from the techniques and procedures we use to build strip boats. More information is a good thing.

The Abenaki is a 16’ all around standard canoe similar to the old “Prospector” design except with less rocker, giving it better tracking ability. Great for two people and kids.

The Nipmuc has a similar shape to the Abenaki, but is longer to carry more gear on a trip.

The Kruger is slimmer than the Abenaki and works well as either a solo (sitting in the bow seat facing sternward) or tandem. Since this has a 33” beam, it is a little more tender but has good secondary stability.

The Wee Lassies are solo canoes typically paddled like an open kayak that evolved over many years through the efforts of Mac McCarthy of Florida.

The Voyager is a solo canoe that works well for expeditions. Bring all your gear for a week or include your dog for local paddles. This can be paddled with a t radi t ional canoe paddle or kayak paddle.

The Otter is similar to a ‘pack’ canoe, lightweight for its potential carrying capacity. It can be portaged into normally inaccessible ponds for a day of fishing.

The Traveler is our most efficient, modern canoe hull even though it looks like a very traditional canoe design.

The White Guide is the expedition canoe. Load it with your gear and camp for a week in the Boundary Waters.

Wee LassieMac McCarthy wrote Featherweight Boatbuilding in 1998 to assist others in the construction of the two designs most dear to him. The Wee Lassie may have started out as one of J H Rushton’s designs but it has gone through several variations to become what it is today. Per an agreement with Mac’s sons, we have lofted the lines for these two canoes into our marine CAD program and after fairing the hull shapes, produced plans and forms with even 12” forms spacing to make it a little more straightforward to build. This is a great, lightweight canoe for a moderately sized person. The seat is mounted on cleats on the bottom of the hull and it is paddled with a double bladed kayak paddle. Think of this as an open kayak with no cockpit to deal with, although you can make the decks as long as you wish.

Wee Lassie IIIf you are a little heavier/taller or want to take your (small) dog with you on occasion, you might consider the Wee Lassie II. This isn’t just an elongated Wee Lassie, but rather a different hull shape altogether with a V shape all it’s own. Whereas the Wee Lassie is very maneuverable, the Wee Lassie II is strong tracking with more capacity.

OtterThe Otter design was created for us by Hans Friedel of Sweden. Like an Otter in the water, this canoe is meant to be a play boat. This is a lightweight (35 lbs), easily portaged solo canoe that can be paddled with a traditional canoe paddle or with a kayak paddle. It is deeper than a Wee Lassie canoe so the seat is attached to cleats that are epoxied to the inside of the hull. However, the bow and stern heights are such that you shouldn’t be pushed about by the wind. A larger paddler will find that it has plenty of capacity. One could even take their Retriever or a small child and still feel very comfortable. We advise inclusion of a keel in its construction to improve tracking with lighter loads.

VoyagerAn excellent solo tripper designed to cruise, with room for plenty of gear, stable, fast, and tracks straight. It has an asymmetrical hull shape and lots of tumblehome so the paddler doesn’t need to reach out for an efficient stroke. Due to its excellent design, the Voyager is at home in a wide variety of environments, from quiet water to windy chop.Note that although the stems are a traditional re-curve look, they are kept very low to minimize being influenced by the wind.

BowStern

KrugerRoger MacGregor, author of When the Chestnut Was in Flower, took the lines for the Chestnut Kruger and the Chestnut Ogilvy. The Kruger was a slim cruising canoe created by the Chestnut Canoe Co. It is described in the old Chestnut Catalog as “Our Cruising Model Canoe...It is a little rounder on the bottom making it a fast canoe.” This is the Newfound Woodworks’ version of the Chestnut Kruger. It was launched on a Sunday morning in May 2003.

This canoe has a high degree of maneuverability owed to its more rounded, softer chine and amount of rocker, making it an excellent boat for paddling on rivers or any other condition where responsiveness is important. An advantage of this design is that it works well with either tandem or solo paddlers. It can be paddled solo by sitting in the bow seat facing sternward. It is even more stable feeling when paddling solo if you kneel and lean your butt against the seat.

We named the Nipmuc and Abenaki in honor of the Native Americans who once paddled and fished the inland waters of southern New England. These canoes are loosely based on old Maine canoe designs with traditional re-curved stems and slightly flatter

bottoms than the old designs originating in Canada. This translates into greater initial stability. One can imagine these canoes packed with a week’s gear for the ultimate paddling adventure.

NipmucWhat do you get when you add a foot to the length and 3⁄4” of an inch to the beam of the Abenaki? The Nipmuc, of course! Actually, it’s not quite that simple, but the two of these boats are so similar in performance that it could be hard to distinguish the two, save for the increased capacity and comfort that the Nipmuc has vs. the Abenaki. If you are looking to bring your favorite four-legged friend along or just load it down with a lot of gear for a trip (see photo at right), look at the Nipmuc!

AbenakiOur most popular canoe, The Abenaki is a joy to paddle by all ages and abilities. The straightforward construction of this c a n o e m a k e s i t an ideal first strip building project. It is the construction of this canoe that we based our strip building DVD on, so you can see the whole canoe take shape before your eyes. Do not confuse the relative ease of construction with a compromise in performance, though. This canoe can handle anything from a day trip to a load of gear for a lengthy excursion!

TravelerFrom the initial design to its first launch June of 2005, to its great popularity today, the Traveler canoe has had an interesting history. When Hans Friedel of Friedel Design created this design for us we could see that it would be very efficient. However, it had the typical plumb stems of modern canoes. We asked Hans to change the stems to be recurved so that we could achieve the appearance of a traditional design while still retaining exceptional performance properties. As a result, the traditional recurved stems makes it look like a canoe that has been handed down through the generations, but paddles like a dream. With the asymmetrical hull along with lots of tumblehome, this canoe has it all: the visual appeal of a traditional canoe with the modern hull associated with some of the most efficient canoes. Now you can have both!Paddlers have told us that this canoe is incredibly efficient. The true test is to get beside another canoe with two paddlers and see how they struggle to keep up. In addition, the Traveler is very stable and has the capacity to carry lots of gear on a trip. The tumblehome allows a wider waterline hull and tucked in gunwales.

White GuideOur ultimate tripping canoe, The White Guide has been paddled the length of the Yellowstone River, in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness, and all points in between! If you need a durable, lightweight, large capacity load hauler, whether it would be for an expeditionary style trip or just need the room for kids or pets, the White Guide offers space galore! Our White Guide was based on a design from the EM White Canoe Co. of Maine and is a very predictable, efficient canoe, two very important characteristics when paddling a loaded canoe.

Rowboats

Don’t see a design you like?We can produce materials and kits for any strip built rowboat design.

All of our designs have been derived from traditional boats that worked well in their various capacities. The Rangeley Lake Boat came from northwestern Maine, the Guideboat from the Adirondacks, the Whitehall and Lawton Tender from the New England coast. Each excelled at its purpose. Ken Bassett of Onion River Boatworks designed Liz to be a stable recreational rowboat. Built in cedar strip construction, these boats are lightweight, beautiful, functional and reasonably maintenance free.

The Rangeley 15 is great for one person fishing and rowing and bringing an occasional passenger.

The Rangeley 16-1/2 is the same beam (width) as the 15’, but stretched a bit. This gives it some more speed on the water.

The Rangeley 17 is the fishing version; load up two fellows with gear and go out for the day! The Rangeley 17 Double-Ender is in development now. This will be the fastest rowing version of the Rangeleys.

The Adirondack Guideboat is l ightweight , car- topable but somewhat less stable feeling than the other rowboats.

The Lawton Tender is a small rowboat that works well being towed behind a larger craft.

The Whitehall is deeper than the Rangeleys with a ful ly convex outer hull and good tracking.

The Liz has elegant lines with a slim, fast hull.

Rangeley 16-1/2We created this version of the Rangeley by lengthening the Rangeley 15. This provides a longer hull length than the 15’ version but maintains the narrower 46” beam. Normal forms spacing is 12”. To get the 16-1/2’ version we provide the 15’ forms and the builder spaces them at 13”. This extra spacing between forms isn’t enough to provide any construction problems but is a simple solution to a longer, yet narrower version of a great design. To accommodate this, we

provide a plan sheet for the 16-1/2 that shows the correct spacing using the 15’ forms. The 16-1/2’ Rangeley will get you a boat that is faster than the Rangeley 17 with more length room than the Rangeley 15.

Rangeleys“The Rangeley Boat is a distinctive American sporting boat that has been in use on the Rangeley Lakes of Maine for something like 100 years, and was well known to past generations of fishermen for its numerous excellent characteristics. It was not limited to the Rangeleys, for by 1900 it was in common use by fishermen on the Belgrade Lakes, on Sebago Lake, and on other lakes in western and southern Maine.” from Building Classic Small Craft, Vol. 1 by John Gardner.

Rangeley 15The Rangeley 15 was created in 1995 from offsets out of the John Gardner book, Building Classic Small Craft. The original Rangeley boats were cedar lapstrake construction with ribs on the inside. Our version is cedar strip-built with epoxy resin and fiberglass cloth providing strength and protection. The Rangeley Lake boats are very stable. If you want to see a demonstration of the ease of rowing and fly fishing, call and order our ten-minute Rangeley DVD.

Rangeley 17This version of the Rangeley is 2’ longer and 2” wider than the Rangeley 15. This provides a longer hull length and more capacity. If you are normally fishing or spending time on the water with more than one person in the boat, this would be the version for you. Many Rangeley 17’s have been built for Row Trolling in Wisconsin, where you can’t use a motor to troll for muskies and you want enough room for two rowers. The Rangeley Lake Boat is featured in Susan Van Leuven’s book, Wood Strip Rowing Craft. You can read John Michne’s review of this book on the Newfound Woodworks’ website.

Rangeley 17 Double-EnderThe Rangeley 17 Double-Ender is the fastest rowing version of the Rangeley line while it retains the great stability of this traditional design. This version is reminiscent of the original Rangeleys that were in the camps when rowing was the only propulsion and motors weren’t availableMichael Dann built the Double-Ender pictured here and elsewhere in this catalog. He says “The boat rows effortlessly with one person on board and very easily with two or more. My wife, two children and I go fishing; the boat is very stable and stands up to the kids moving around very well. I have rowed the boat at trolling speed for three hours and never broke a sweat. John Gardner was right; we’ve

forgotten what its like to row a boat that was designed to be rowed.”

Lawton Tender -Adirondack Guideboat

Lawton TenderThe Lawton Tender came about in response to a customer looking for a small yacht tender he could build with strips. The lines were taken directly from John Gardner’s Building Classic Small Craft and modified for cedar-strip construction. Originally designed by Charles Lawton, renowned for his fine tenders and superlative craftsmanship, the tenders had to “row and tow well, be moderately good seaboats, carry heavy loads, yet shine like a piece of fine furniture.” The Lawton Tender will complement the finest yacht or serve as classy little fishing boat.

Adirondack GuideboatAdirondack Guideboats were developed by several different builders in the Adirondack region of upper New York state during the late 1800’s when the area was a popular summer retreat for affluent residents of New York and Philadelphia. The vacationers would hire a guide to take them out fishing and hunting. The guide needed a fast, lightweight boat that would transport him and his customer quickly across lakes and could be easily carried over land so they could get to the prime fishing spots and back in time for a fine dinner at the hotel. These Guideboats were built on spruce ribs cut from the natural crooks of spruce roots. Strip-built construction is a logical modern alternative choice to the planked and ribbed original construction. “No doubt Dwight Grant would have grabbed at epoxy and other modern materials to cut weight,” says Kenneth Durant, author of The Adirondack Guideboat. Strip-building is an excellent way to easily build a light, strong and beautiful Guideboat.

BowStern

“The guide-boat was a fast, light, oared boat pointed at both ends - a cross between a rowboat and a canoe. It was big enough for the guide and his customers but light enough for the guide to take on his own over the many ‘carries’ between lakes,” wrote Kenneth and Helen Durant, authors of The Adirondack Guide-Boat.

Our Guideboat design is derived from the Cole’s Guideboat, 16’2” long with a 38” beam.

WhitehallThe Whitehall Pulling Boat is a classic rowing craft based on an old New England design. This boat is slightly narrower than the Rangeley Lake Boat with a traditional skeg and elegant “wine glass” transom. Noted for being fast, seaworthy, and capable of carrying a large load, Whitehalls were the workhorse of commercial ports in the 19th century. The Whitehall is fitted with double oarlocks and when rowed in tandem is a quick straight-tracking bullet. The classic smooth l ines of the craft coupled with the fluid rowing motion of the oarsman is guaranteed to turn heads.

LizThe Liz is an elegant pulling boat designed by Ken Bassett of Onion River Boatworks. Coupled with a rowing rig, this design will provide you with all the exercise you want while including a great deal of stability, much more than a typical rowing shell. Under Ken’s direction, we lofted his lapstrake plans to a marine CAD program and developed cross sections every 12” for strip building. The great benefit of the strip built version is that we can shed about 30 lbs of weight compared to lapstrake. Note that you can carry a passenger in this pulling boat, something you wouldn’t be able to do in a rowing shell.

The Newfound Ladder-LOC Strongback is a new method for assembling the forms of a kayak onto the strongback, or, backbone of a cedar strip kayak.Following the guidelines of the assembly system, the amount of time to construct and assemble a Newfound Ladder-LOC versus a traditional 2x4 box beam strongback is reduced from approximately 8-10 hours to 11⁄2-2 hours, greatly simplifying the process and eliminating a large amount of error.

The Newfound Ladder-LOC Strongback is comprised of forms and brackets manufactured from medium-density fiberboard. These forms and brackets are interlocked and when fully assembled, provide a stable building platform for a strip built kayak.

Osprey

The Excursion, Osprey, Spirit, and Sea Wolf strip kayaks were designed for us by Hans Friedel of Friedel Design in Sweden. The reason we chose these designs from Hans is that they fit our criteria of high performance sea kayak designs that can

be built by first time strip builders with great results. We have applied the Newfound Ladder-LOC Strongback method to these four designs (see below).

The Outer Island, designed by Jay Babina of Jason Design, is a low volume Greenland kayak design that is somewhat more challenging to build.

Excursion - OspreyExcursion

The Excursion is a beautiful, lightweight kayak designed to be used in a recreational setting such as day trips on inland lakes and quiet water. It is a stable, predictable handing kayak suitable for all ages and abilities. The large cockpit opening provides a great deal of comfort when left open, but can also accept our largest spray skirt for paddling in foul weather or sheltered ocean coves. This kit can also be modified to have a smaller cockpit opening and includes fore and aft bulkheads.

OspreyThe 15’-9” Osprey is an exceptional touring boat for the smaller paddler, or, a great day tripping kayak for the small to mid size person. The sleek hull has low drag making it a very fast boat for the length; it responds to input from the paddler with very little effort. This is an excellent, proven design.

Sea WolfThe 17’ Sea Wolf has many of the same design characteristics of the Spirit, but with a slightly beamier, more forgiving rounded V-hull, this is a kayak that can be paddled with confidence by all skill levels, in all sorts of weather and conditions. The increase in stability that the hull provides also lends itself to fishing, photography or anything else that you can think of that you may not want to try in a round hull design. The extra capacity that this design has can also facilitate gear storage for extended trips. If you are looking for our best expedition type kayak, you will be very happy with the versatility of this boat.

SpiritThe Newfound Woodworks’ fastest kayak, The Spirit, is a dream to paddle. If you are looking for a touring kayak that will get you from point A to point B and everywhere in between in the shortest amount of t ime, look no further! The Spirit’s 22” beam and fine entry results in a very responsive boat, but it should be noted that this design still has a high degree of stability and will not punish the paddler who makes the slightest mistake. Even so, this design is best suited for the intermediate to advanced paddler.

Outer Island - HybridsOuter Island

The Outer Island is a low volume kayak following the West Greenland lines. The kayak is designed for intermediate and advanced paddlers with its 21 inch beam - yet it is quite stable - comparable to many boats in the intermediate level. It’s quite fast with a stronger tracking characteristic yet plenty maneuverable for sea touring, playing in waves and winding along rocky shores.

The boat is extremely forgiving because of its strong secondary stability and low volume. It rolls easily and will lay on its side with very little sculling effort. Paddlers who know the technique can easily balance brace it! These characteristics were well thought out in advance and incorporated in to the hull shape - a major criteria of the designer. Paddlers who like to play in their boats will fully appreciate its forgiving traits. The kayak maintains its low lines yet will comfortably handle 6’3” paddlers with plenty of foot room and will not force you into a straight leg position. It’s 7” rear deck height behind the seat allows for ease of leaning back when rolling. It’s extended length of 17’10+” increases speed and achieves its long low looks. A length over this is only needed for loading in a lot of weight or narrowing the beam and not having the kayak sink too deep. You can do any kind of extended trip with this boat that the Greenland Eskimos did.

Hybrid KayaksThe Newfound Woodworks, Inc. was the first kit manufacturer to create the “Hybrid” kayak and coin the name in 1999. Since we crafted the first Hybrid by hand, we have developed a very sophisticated method for this type of construction. As we describe in the Methods section of page 4, our plywood panels are all pre-beveled with wire holes drilled. The deck is now stripped on a separate ‘strongback’ frame rather than on forms inserted into the hull as we did originally. We limit our Hybrid Kayak designs to those with hard chines. If you want a round, smooth bottomed kayak we prefer strip built hulls. Our space is limited here, so we suggest that you refer to our web page, www.newfound.com, for current kit pricing and specifications of the Hybrids.

“The Strip Built Sea Kayak” by Nick SchadeThis book has launched hundreds of home-built kayaks. Nick created his own unique strongback, cockpit treatment, and design shapes. Offsets for three kayaks are included: the Great Auk, the Guillemot and the Guillemot Double. There are chapters on kayak design and creative stripping.

Along with: “Cedar Strip Boat Building“ and “Applying Epoxy & Fiberglass” DVD’S, see descriptions below.

The Row Boat Pre-Kit:“Wood Strip Rowing Craft” by Susan Van LeuvenA comprehensive guide to construction of wood strip rowing craft. Wood strip construction is renowned for its facility in producing sophisticated hull shapes, and can be mastered by the home builder interested in creating a quality boat. This book introduces rowers to the delights of constructing the ideal boat, to meet one’s particular needs and aesthetic desires. The wooden parts are made with ordinary wood shop tools, employing standard working techniques. The first-time user, following the detailed instructions in this book, can apply fiberglass and epoxy successfully. Finishing methods are also presented, to help builders show off their craftsmanship to best advantage. 288 pages, over 800 photos, and 53 line drawings.

Plus: “Cedar Strip Boat Building“ and “Applying Epoxy & Fiberglass” DVD’S, see descriptions below.

“Cedar Strip Boat Building,” a video in DVD format (©The Newfound Woodworks, Inc.) shows you how we build a canoe, starting with setting up the forms, laminating the stems, stripping the hull, and fairing it out. Each step is described in detail with lots of close-ups to give you great detail. If you are considering building a Cedar Strip boat or just want to hone your skills for the next one, this is an incredible tool!

“Applying Epoxy & Fiberglass,” a video in DVD format (©The Newfound Woodworks, Inc.) In this video you will look over our shoulders as we describe our hull preparation techniques, apply the sealer coat, cloth coat and then filler coats of epoxy. We discuss the purpose of the application materials we supply and review safety procedures. Three days of intense filming were edited to 78 minutes of extremely valuable information. We show you the fiberglass wet-out of the outer hull of a kayak and the inner hull of a canoe.

3M Respirator Model 7502This is a new and updated Half Facepiece Respirator body only (filters are additional). What is really great about this is that the silicone is very flexible, comfortable and conforming. This respirator is actually a joy to wear! The size says medium, but this will fit most adults as it runs a little big. Use with our Organic filters or Dust/Mist filters, also made by 3M. The Organic Vapor filter is used when applying epoxy or varnish. It really makes a difference in filtering out the chemicals. There is a plastic retainer to hold a pre-filter which keep your Organic Vapor body from getting plugged up if you are in a dusty situation. When not using the Organic Vapor filter, keep it sealed in a zip lock bag to prevent deterioration of its carbon. If you need protection from sanding dust, not chemicals, use the 2071 Dust/Mist filter. It is less expensive than the Organic Vapor filter and very effective for dust.

Note: The Organic Vapor Filter or Dust/ Mist Filter are required for the Respirator to work properly.

Respirator $32.95Organic Vapor Filter $12.50Dust/Mist Filter $4.95

Scraper Handle and 6 Different BladesWe have found this great scraping handle with six blades that lends itself to exactly what we are doing with these strip boats. These blades are good for scraping the outer hull and especially good for the concave sections of the inner hull. The lever in the handle allows you to quickly change from one blade shape to another.$18/set

Fairing BoardThis is a flexible board made from thin plywood with fiberglass on the back for strength. The working surface has Velcro glued to it so you can use Hook-It sandpaper. This board works really well for fairing your cedar hull after you have taken the corners down with a spokeshave or block plane.Sandpaper included: one sheet each of 40, 60, and 80 grit. The lighter grits can be used to fair out lumps, drips and drools in epoxy.$29.95 for package

6” Japanese Pull SawThis saw is great! It has very fine teeth so you make very precise cuts. We use it to cut the long angles of our strips when doing the herring bone pattern on the bottom of a boat. A really different feature is the “Woodpecker” tooth that allows you to start out in the middle of your kayak and cut a precise, thin kerf slice. We use it to start all of our flush hatch opening on the kayaks.$35.95 each

Flat Sole Kunz SpokeshaveA spokeshave is used to shape your stems and to fair your outer hull. This design works well because it has two threaded adjusters so you can creep up on your depth adjustment and maintain the correct angle.$32.95 each

The Veritas Mark IISharpening Systemdelivers repeatable, consistent, fast honing. Its integral blade registration system squares the blade and sets the bevel angle in one step. The package includes three gross bevel-angle range configurations: a high-angle range (25° to 54° in seven increments), a standard-angle range (15° to 40° in six increments), and a third range for back bevels. Blade stop has discrete positions for preset angles. The clamping mechanism registers on the face of the blade, accepting flat and tapered blades as well as those with irregular geometry.$74.95 each

Shinto Wood RaspThis tool is a confidence builder! Yes, it looks like a bunch of hack saw blades welded together, but it works well to help you creep up on the shaping of your stems. It also can be used to knock down those epoxy drools on your outer hull. We like to use it to rough up our gunwales to create “bite” for the epoxy. The unique design prevents clogging.$29.95 each

Bits - Coving & Beading SetThe cove, bead and stacked router bits have a ¼” shank and carbide cutting edges. These are the same design bits that we used for years when we milled the bead and cove with routers. If you use the stacked bit, you have both cove and bead on one bit. Change from one to the other by lowering or raising the bit in your router table.Stacked bit $33.00Two-bit set $38.95

Interface PadThis is a foam pad with hook on one side and loop on the other. It is 5” in diameter, has 8 holes for the Dewalt or Ryobi Random Orbit sanders or 5 holes for the Porter Cable Random Orbit Sander for dust collection. The purpose of this pad is to allow your sandpaper to conform more readily to either the outer hull or inner hull. This increases your efficiency and gives you a better, more consistent sanding job without flat spots.$16.95 each

We supply two different epoxy systems because some builders prefer one manufacturer over the other and sometimes one is less expensive. Both are two to one mix, non-blushing, slow curing, and low viscosity. What this means to the builder is that you will have more time to work on your project and the cloth will wet out faster. These epoxies are also clear and won’t fog since bubbles generated in the wetting out process dissipate nicely. All epoxy hulls should be varnished or painted. Our varnish is listed below. Prices aren’t listed here because they change fairly quickly. Check our website or call us and we can give you current pricing and help with your planning.

We also have used the High Back Canoe seat in conjunction with the Solo Thwart.

This is an Integrated Kayak Backband/Seat with the seat bottom formed to accommodate both cheeks of the paddler’s butt. The shape is very similar to your traditional John Deere tractor seat. This is very comfortable and installs easily by bolting through the hip brace towers on each side. You will need 19” between the hip braces for the Large seat and 17-1/2” for the Medium seat, but you should wait to have the seat in hand before you install the hip braces. Note that this seat will not work in low volume kayaks such as the Outer Island, Guillemot, Expedition Single, or Night Heron because the side ‘towers’ will be too high for the allotted space. The backrest attaches to this seat as a unit. There is a strap on the backband that loops through two attachment points behind the hip brace towers of the seat. Two vertical straps from the back band loop through slots in the back of the seat and hook to the back of your cockpit coaming.$149.95 Seat and Backband

The Newfound Seat is a fabric covered compressed foam pad, about 2” thick at the highest points, 15¼” wide x 14¾” deep,

dish-shaped somewhat like a tractor seat. To install you would apply contact cement or spray adhesive to the bottom of the seat and press into place on the hull, using weights until the glue sets. This will give you a very comfortable seat. We supply two wedges of mini-cell foam to help flatten out the V shape of the hull somewhat. The Sonic Backband ($32.95) is comfortable, 16-1/2” wide x 6” tall, and made from compressed foam covered with fabric. Includes webbing, quick release buckles, and stainless steel bolts for installation.

Dave Schmidt from Wisconsin told me about his experience at the Bob Ellis Classic Row Trolling Tournament last summer. Dave brought his 17’ Rangeley to the event and it seems it was voted “Nicest Boat” by the other attendees. Since he built the Rangeley he has finished one Spirit kayak for his daughter and is working on a second Spirit. What a way to use up the Wisconsin winter!
