Status of EPICS control for ECCTD

Françoise Gougnaud Irfu/SIS
CEA DSM Irfu
Slow tuning system = stepper motor
• Chosen motor: Phytron VSS 52 • Stepper drive: our requirements
– COTS boards– remote intelligence ,i.e. not on the IOC– Ethernet communication if possible– easily scalable and configurable for
hardware and software– EPICS support– Or possibility to use EPICS streamdevice

Only 2 solutions were considered
• Delta tau– Not convenient
• Nexeya Midi-ingenierie BMAC– Nexeya is a sound French company– BMAC already used at Irfu– could be used for slits or other
motorisations• Intent on looking at other solutions in the
near future

Delta tau: finally not convenient
• Delta tau: 2 possibilities– UMAC (Power PMAC)
• Independant system with CPU, Ethernet• EPICS support
– Geobrick• A robust support in the EPICS community• A new version with embedded Linux
• can synchonise complex motions for several motors
• too sophisticated for our tuning systems• Furthermore is too expensive

• BMAC module version
• BMAC board version – BMAC crate can accommodate up to 12
boards (or 4 or …) on the crate– possible control of the motor up to 50 m
cable
– communication through Ethernet

BMAC Motion control board or module: some specifications
• Current 2.5 A (whereas DFMC 1.8A)
• 256 µsteps• Dynamic current adjustment• Encoder feedback• ROHS• Voltage BMAC 45V good speed
performances• 8 reconfigurable digital I/Os
– limit switches, home positioning• Automatic limit switch handling

CEA DSM Irfu
BMAC Motion control board or module: some specifications
• 1 analog input can be used as generic remote I/Os or in order to synchronize motion with another device
• No external power supply needed• Position reset on encoder index

• An EPICS driver based on streamdevice is in progress but difficulties have been encountered
• Presentation by Adelino Gomes

BMAC prices
• For instance, for a configuration of 200 axes distributed over 10 crates:3500 + 9*2000 + 200*300 = 91500 euros
~450 euros per axe

Fast tuning system with a NOLIAC piezoelectric actuator
• NAC2015-Hxx has been chosen by Guillaume Devanz– The piezo controller system has not been
chosen yet• Requirements
– easily scalable and configurable– Ethernet communication– EPICS support already developed– Or simple to develop

• A multichannels configuration of amplifiers and function generators has to be defined
• 2 solutions are being studied currently– modified amplifier PI E-508.OE– The modifications made are on the voltage and the current:• 220 volts max • peak current 2A • average current 100 mA
– amplifier E-618.20G
Solutions for piezo controller

• These amplifiers modules can be installed on a 19 ’’ crate in twos or fours
• TCP/IP communication
• A discussion is in progress with PI to specify the configuration but we encounter some difficulties to get all the
precisions and documentation we want

Advantages of Irfu/EPICS solutions for stepper motor and piezo
• This architecture solution can be controlled by cPCI or µTCA or … : not control boxes dependant
• Easily scalable solution:– boards on a crate to control motors– modules on a crate to control piezos
• Not expensive

RF power control
• Specific to Saclay installation
• We have started some meetings to define the different signals– EPICS control– PLCs control

EPICS Communication and Siemens PLCs
• Siemens PLCs– Architecture defined by Jean
• S7plc chosen for communication between EPICS and PLCs
