Progress through learning

Our various modular programs offer you a wide range of topics, enabling you to improve your skills and knowledge and even gain a post-graduate certificate.

Our programs run for one to two years and typically include theoretical as well as practical modules. We complement our face-to-face sessions with online content to make it easier to fit it around your busy schedule. Once you have registered and about 30 days before the course starts you will be given access to our Learning-Management-System, where you can read the lecture notes before each module, complemented with journal articles, images and recorded webinars.

Our modular programs consist of three components:

1. Pre-session survey and preparation

2. Taught theoretical or practical sessions covering key areas of the syllabus

3. Post-session survey, reflection and further study

We test your knowledge before and after each session and also ask you to reflect on your skills and set yourselves goals, to guarantee the best possible outcome for each individual. Our pre-modular surveys also help our speakers to gauge the level of the group and to adapt their teaching contents to fit the needs of the delegates.

You will get a certificate of attendance after every module and if you are an AVA member, your VetEd points will get credited to your account automatically.

5

Page 7: CE Programs - Improve International · Bone grafting and external skeletal fixation 05.09.2015 in Melbourne Spinal surgery 06.09.2015 in Melbourne 8 Tutors: Free resources: ‘Veterinary

• All practical sessions have a limited number of delegates to ensure each individual benefits from plenty of hands-on time and the opportunity to practise the taught techniques.

• During the theoretical session lectures are presented by the speaker and the day ends with an interactive discussion of clinical cases.

• Some modules will be delivered online.

Small Animal SurgeryThe most in-depth and hands-on postgraduate modular surgery program, enabling you to improve surgical skills.

The small animal surgery program is split into two parts; part one covering soft-tissue surgery and part two orthopaedic/spinal surgery. Each part includes four, hands-on practical sessions where you can practise your surgical skills in a supervised and safe environment.

To complement the face to face sessions, we will also provide an online platform for delegates. This will run alongside the taught program and will offer easy access to course handbooks, module notes, case-discussions via a ‘closed’ forum, webinars plus additional material such as relevant articles, videos and presentations.

Feline ultrasonography and internal medicine Wound reconstruction

Course content:Course content:

Day 1 will cover the most recent developments in wound management, including the difference between cats and dogs with respect to wound healing and clinical impact, different types of dressings, particulars of specific wounds (burns, gunshot,…) and use of negative suction wound therapy. You will learn about tension relieving sutures, and local skin flaps (including skin fold flaps). Delegates will get a chance to practice some skin flaps. Techniques covered will include basic skin plasty, tension relieving sutures, advancement flap, rotational flap and skin fold flaps. Day 2 will be focused on advanced techniques of reconstructive surgery in dogs and cats including axial pattern flap, skin grafts, foot pad reconstruction, myocutaneous and muscular flaps, and use of omentum in reconstructive surgery. There will be a chance to practise some skin flaps.

This two day practical course presents delegates with case studies in which ultrasound is used to assist with the diagnosis of feline medical conditions. Emphasis is placed on using ultrasonography as an additional tool in the work-up of medical cases. Delegates will learn, where ultrasound is able to confirm a diagnosis and where the absence of changes visible upon ultrasonography does not rule out a particular disease. Sensitivity and specificity of abdominal ultrasound for each of the most common diseases in cats will be discussed as well as the correlation of sonographic findings with clinical presentations.

Frequently asked questions

I don’t know if I can commit to doing the program over two years. Can I spread it over more years?Yes you can! We try to be as flexible as possible to fit with budget and timetables, so with this in mind delegates now have up to four years to complete the programs. If you would like to spread the course out a bit, call us on + 61 2 8417 2008 to discuss all the possibilities or simply drop us an e-mail: [email protected]

Have you got any payment options?Paying upfront works out cheaper for you, however if you wish to spread the cost we offer direct debit plans to delegates enabling payment to be spread over monthly instalments. See the table on page 20 for more details.

I want to register on a modular course but I may be away for some of the modules. Does this mean I will miss out?No. We understand that our delegates are busy professionals and aim to be as flexible as possible. Whilst we need advance notice if you are going to be unable to attend a particular module, we will make every effort to find you an module when the program runs the following year.

Will I have to pay for anything on top of the course fee? It’s entirely up to you if, and how much, you want to spend on any additional learning resources. You don’t have to buy anything. We give each delegate of one of

our two-year programs a FREE copy of a key textbook to accompany the course. We also provide course information online, course notes for the taught area of the syllabus, comprehensive reading lists for each taught and non-taught section, and additional online learning resources.

Can I split one of these courses between different members of my practice?Yes you can. All we require from you is to tell us who is coming to which module in advance and pay upfront. Please understand that you’ll only get one free book and set of notes per place, not per person.

How well will this prepare me for the MANZCVS exam?Improve International’s modular programs cover almost all key areas you will be tested on during the ANZCVS Membership exam. There are nevertheless some subjects you will have to prepare for yourself in self-guided studies. It is always a good idea to check the specific requirements of the respective chapter you are seeking to gain Membership from. On top of attending the modules, you will have to study the taught, practiced and discussed contents yourself to acquire a level of knowledge which will allow you to pass the exam.

Don’t just take our word for it

Claudia O’Connell (Western Australia)Small Animal Surgery

I realised after the first module how much knowledge gaps there are despite being a fairly experienced and competent surgeon. It is a great guide towards doing the Membership exams, providing a more modular approach to a very broad subject area. The course is well organised and the lectures are great. Great course, well worth the monies!

Folko Balfanz (Austria)Small Animal Surgery

I decided to take the Small Animal Surgery course, since I like the concept of a continuous course over the course of 2 years. The group size is small, which is great and lecturers as well as organisation could not have been better.

Carolina Pérez Medina (Spain)Diagnostic Imaging

The best of the course was the learning obtained in each module, the retraining of notions that you had forgotten and new concepts. Retaking the will to keep on learning and training, something fundamental in this profession.

Eliza Collins (United Kingdom)Small Animal Medicine

I felt it was time to refresh and extend my knowledge and wanted a course that was challenging and which offered the potential to advance my career. Having taken courses with Improve before, I was familiar with the excellent facilities it offers so opted for the PgC in Small Animal Medicine. After all, medicine is an area that’s constantly evolving and is relevant to all aspects of veterinary work.

David Larratt (New South Wales)Diagnostic Imaging

It is two weekends into the Improve Diagnostic Imaging program and I now know what all the buttons do on my machine . Even though my machine is an old human “Philips HD 5000” I am getting much better images and therefore am becoming more confident and enthusiastic when investigating abdominal problems. Learning ultrasonography requires regular practice and a recurring mixture of theory and workshops. The Improve Diagnostic Imaging program is delivering this objective.

David J Clemence (Victoria)Diagnostic Imaging

Practical, thorough and fun....one of the best CE experiences in years.
