2014 PURPLE SWARM DEFENSE BEST EVER? Byrd’s Purple Swarm Defense stung opponents all season long. The 2014 Purple Swarm allowed opponents just 210.8 yards of total offense (72.8 rushing and 137.9 passing) and only 11.8 points per game. This Byrd defense was statistically the best in modern school history, beating out the 2002 defense by nearly 11 yards per game. Was the 2014 defense the best ever? That’s a question that can’t be answered truthfully. The 2014 Purple Swarm Defense was certainly the best in the Mike Suggs era. However, it’s highly unlikely that any future Byrd team will post a record like the 1934 Jackets, who shut out nine opponents dur-ing its state championship season.

CASH-ING IT IN A stalwart for three years at linebacker for Byrd’s Purple Swarm Defense, Krishun Cash had a sensational senior season. For the second straight year, he led the team in tackles registering 68 total stops this season. He tied with Gabe McDonald for the team lead with 17 tackles-for-loss. Cash had a 35-yard inter-ception return for a touchdown, the second of his career, against Lakeshore, and a 12-yard blocked punt return for a touchdown against Shreve. In the final two games of his illustrious career, he had 22 total tackles, six tackles-for-loss, two sacks and a forced fumble. Cash was named the District 1-5A Defensive Most Valuable Player, was selected to The Times First-Team All-City Team and was a First-Team Class 5A All-State selection by the Louisiana Sports Writer’s Association.

SAFETY WARNING Safeties Jawun Jiles and Trent Jones played outstanding football this season. Jiles and Jones, who as a junior was a first-year starter, finished the season ranked second and third on the team with 59 and 54 total tackles, respectively. Jones led the team with four interceptions and he racked up 140 interception return yards. Jones registered a career-high 11 total tackles, a sack, a fumble recovery and a pass breakup against the Parkway Panthers. Jiles had 21 tackles, a fumble recovery and a pass breakup in the final two games of his Byrd career. Both Jiles and Jones were First-Team All-District selections. Jiles was also named to The Times First-Team All-City Team and he was a First-Team Class 5A All-State selection.

DEFENSIVE LINE DESTRUCTION The defensive line was a key cog in the success of Byrd’s Purple Swarm Defense. The Yellow Jackets rotated linemen throughout the season. From the starters - Gabe McDonald, Clinton Oliver, Cole Albritton and Mike Taylor, to backups in Micah Minter, Shimorye Hampton, Landon Robinson, Andrew Harp and Bryan Stewart, the defensive front was stellar in both stopping the run and pressuring the passer. McDonald and Taylor were both First-Team All-District selections, while McDonald was also named to The Times First-Team All-City Team.

THE DOM-INATOR Senior wingback Dominic Haggerty was dominating during his junior and senior years. He was voted Byrd’s Most Outstanding Player in the 2013 Div. I Champi-onship game, and was a First-Team All-District selection in 2014. In Byrd’s 42-13 win over Calvary, Haggerty may have turned in the best performance of his Byrd career by rushing for 145 yards and three touchdowns. He also returned the second half kickoff 92 yards for a touchdown. The Dom-inator registered three rushing touchdowns in a little over a minute in Byrd’s 35-6 win over Fon-tainebleau. It marked the fourth time this season that Dom had scored two or more touchdowns in a game. In his Byrd career, Haggerty rushed for 1,893 yards and 30 touchdowns. Haggerty finished his stellar career with a total of 35 touch-downs, which ranks fifth on the school’s all-time scoring list.

WYSS KICKS WAY INTO RECORD BOOK Senior kicker Jake Wyss carried on what has become a Byrd tradition of out-standing place kickers. With names like Trent Wierick, David Hankins, John Shaughnessy, Ben Eldredge and more, Wyss etched his name among those Jack-et greats. As a sophomore in 2012, Wyss kicked a career-long 42-yard field goal in Byrd’s 37-14 win over Captain Shreve. Also as a sophomore, Jake booted the Yellow Jackets to a share of the District 1-5A title with a 23-yard field goal in the season finale at Airline. In the 2012 playoffs, he matched that career-long kick in Byrd’s 38-21 playoff loss to Barbe. In his senior season, Jake was 5-of-8 on field goals, with all three misses coming on 47-plus yard attempts. He was a perfect 58-of-58 on PAT kicks and averaged nearly 57 yards per kickoff and 49 of his kickoffs resulted in touchbacks. This season Jake became Byrd’s all-time PAT leader with 119 career extra point kicks.

OUTLOOK FOR 2015? Byrd will have to replace 16 starters (8 Off., 8 Def.) from the 2014 team. Offen-sively, the Yellow Jackets are expected to return junior quarterback Deuce Cas-ton and junior fullback Tray Allen, who is recuperating from a knee injury he suffered against Airline in week six. Junior receivers Andrew Suggs, Sahil Dha-wan and Joey Jernigan are also expected to return. Byrd will have to replace its entire offensive line, and will look to juniors Garrett Malmay, Lawson Scott and Parker Hall to step in and fill the voids. It’s a similar scenario on the defensive side of the ball as the Jackets must replace eight starters off of the best defense in modern history. Juniors Cole Albritton, Landon Robinson and Micah Minter, all of whom saw significant playing time in 2014, will be expected to take over along the defensive line. Look for juniors Cameron Jones, and Trent Touchet along with sophomore Steele Netterville to man the linebacker spots. Juniors Steven Grant and Trent Jones are two returning starters, and along with junior Luther Dallas will help shore up the Purple Swarm’s secondary.
