Hot on the heels of October’s release of Elijah, comes a new recording of Mendelssohn’s opulent Symphony No. 2 ‘Lobgesang’. Composed to celebrate the 400th anniversary of Gutenberg’s invention of the printing press, it enjoyed great success following its 1840 première in Leipzig. Principal Conductor and Artistic Director of the MDR Leipzig Radio Symphony, and Music Director of the Orchestre National de Lyon, Jun Märkl is one of the most notable conductors of his generation. Soloists include Ruth Ziesak, Mojca Erdmann and Christian Elsner whose previous Naxos recordings have been highly praised.

Sergey Lyapunov’s Piano Concerto No. 2 deserves a place among the great Romantic piano concertos, while the Rhapsody on Ukrainian Themes bears the imprint of Liszt’s virtuosic pianistic style. As a Russian Nationalist composer, Lyapunov was strongly influenced by Mily balakirev, leader of the ‘Mighty Handful’ of composers, to whom he dedicated his Glinka Prize-winning Piano Concerto No. 1.
The young Georgian pianist Shorena Tsintsabadze, a graduate of Moscow’s Tchaikovsky Conservatory, joins the Russian Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Dmitry Yablonsky, whose Naxos discography includes many acclaimed albums of Russian and Romantic repertoire.

The Missa brevis in F is Haydn’s earliest authenticated Mass and was written shortly before his departure from St Stephen’s in Vienna, where he had been recruited as a choirboy around 1740. Haydn himself, on rediscovering the work almost fifty years later, said he admired it for ‘the melody and a certain youthful fire’.
In contrast, the Harmoniemesse, written for the nameday festivities of Prince Nicolaus II’s wife in 1802, was to be Haydn’s last major composition. Using a full Harmonie (wind band), the work’s expressive intensity belies the end of its composer’s career.

Naxos continues its reissue of the Marco Polo recordings of Havergal brian symphonies, of which the Gothic (Naxos 8.557418-19) is the most famous. This CD includes the inventive, fantasia-like Symphony No. 17 (1960-61), and the composer’s last ever work, the dark and affirmative Symphony No. 32 (1968). It is a remarkable achievement for a man of 92.
Composed five decades earlier, the extended symphonic poem In Memoriam (1910), notable for the ‘advanced’ nature of its scoring, is contrasted with the exuberant Festal Dance (1908), once intended as the finale to an early work the composer had originally entitled Fantastic Symphony.

On this CD, Weber’s Clarinet Quintet is preceded and followed by two different versions of Mozart’s Allegro Fragment K. Anh. 91 (=516c) for clarinet and string quartet. Mozart wrote the
beginning in 1787. Approximately half of the piece is in his own handwriting, but the manuscript breaks off towards the middle. Franz beyer and Robert D. Levin, probably the two greatest Mozart experts of our time, each wrote a version that completes Mozart’s original fragment with an approximation of what he might have written in the second half.

This album profiles acclaimed Finnish conductor Leif Segerstam as an equally inspired composer who has written nearly 250 symphonies to this date.
Featured on this disc are three one-movement symphonies that form a kind of "bergen trilogy": No. 81 "After Eighty..." (2002), No. 162 "Doubling the Number for bergen..." (2006), and No. 181 "Names itself when played... = (raising the number with 100 for bergen)" (2007). Leif Segerstam has built a legend of its own through his creative usage of the English language. His genius as a composer deploys itself through a unique notation technique: the score leaves a lot of freedom to the performers and yet requires no conductor for the orchestra. Julius Weismann made a significant contribution to the music of the twentieth century. His catalogue of over 150 works include eleven String Quartets, two of which Georg Mais, the conductor of this new recording has arranged for chamber orchestra. Weismann’s style is difficult to classify; it exhibits influences from German romanticism, especially the music of Schubert, Schumann and brahms, as well as impressionistic echoes.

He generally uses established musical forms but invests them with a quirky and distinctive harmonic idiom. This CD explores his rich output for brass and organ, from the elegant Theme and Variations, Op. 7, of 1951 to the lusty Five Dances for Organ, Op. 179, written in 1988.

The Violin and the Mandolin, accomplices and rivals: in the field of musical literature of XVIII and XIX centuries, many violinists and composers who knew the mandolin transposed their knowledge from one instrument to the other: the bow’s beats turned into strokes of the plectrum, while arpeggios, double string chords and virtuosities began to be used very frequently. Giuliani was a violinist, a harpist, master of harpsichord and singing; what is clearly evident is that the composer had a particular skill and a rich inspiration in making the instruments talk together, thus obtaining the most of their timbre’s variety and their technical and expressive possibilities. The Ensemble baschenis took the manuscripts of the Quartets directly from Gesellschaft der Musikfreunde in Vienna and edited them directly from the microfilm.

In music, the term folia refers to a melodic pattern derived from a very old Carnevale dance, very likely originated in Portugal. Leaving its Lusitanian
origins, the so called Follia di Spagna became particularly successful thanks to its the melody and the naive simplicity of its harmony, as can be clearly heard in the many anonymous folia taken from collections dating to the early 1700’s by the biblioteca Nacional in Madrid. Organists and harpsichordists of various nationalities have been inspired by the Folia, but this CD focuses on its use in Italian music, in particular, from Rome and Naples. There are loads of Mozart recordings in the archives of the N.D.R. in Hamburg. Surprisingly, no symphonies have been scheduled for these Capitol sessions, but instead: the Eine kleine Nachtmusik.
No acrobatics here: the tempi are perfectly chosen, and the conductor’s love for Mozart is unmistakable.
A particularly interesting part is the hushed fast notes in the third variation of the slow movement, reminiscent of the anguished “bisogna aver coraggio” just before the entrance of the three masks in Don Giovanni.

In his native country, the Netherlands, Paul van Kempen is mainly remembered for the “van Kempen affair”, a demonstration against his alleged compromising role during WW II. His discography was determined by the record companies: so, the fledging Philips label was producing a catalogue of standard works. If the DGG recording of beethoven’s Piano Concertos with Wilhelm Kempff and the berlin Philharmonic is famous, there are significant gaps in his discography when it comes to Mahler and brahms. That’s why the performance of Mahler’s First Symphony with the RAI Orchestra of Turin is a welcome addition and a unique document, as well as the Second brahms Piano Concerto with Kempff, in a compelling performance.

The Austrian composer/conductor HK Gruber and the Swedish trumpeter Håkan Hardenberger are collaborators of long standing, whose previous projects in common include the highly successful trumpet concerto Aerial. Like that piece, Busking (from 2007) was also composed at the instigation of Hardenberger. In his own liner notes, Gruber relates how the piece, which is here released on disc for the first time, came into being. The original commission was for a piece for string orchestra and solo trumpet in C, without the use of mutes, slides or unorthodox playing techniques, but this soon developed into something rather more complicated, partly through Hardenberger’s own suggestions. The solo trumpet part of the finished work involves both E flat and C trumpets, as well as the flugelhorn, and the soloist is also required to play on the mouthpiece alone; it furthermore
employs various mutes and techniques such as multiphonics. The final score also includes solo parts for banjo and accordion, as well as some highly involved writing for strings, making busking, in Gruber’s own words, ‘one of my most difficult pieces, a tour de force for the soloists and orchestral musicians alike.’ Gruber has enjoyed a close relationship with the Swedish Chamber Orchestra for several years, a collaboration which has already been documented on disc with Manhattan broadcasts – ‘a disc to convert anyone who thinks contemporary music is unapproachable’ according to the reviewer in The Daily Telegraph. On the present disc, it is the orchestra’s leader Katarina Andreasson who takes on the solo parts of the remaining two works, the by turns lyrical and jazzy Nebelsteinmusik, and Violin Concerto No.1, which sprang from a love song composed by Gruber in 1973. The theme of the song underlies the entire one-movement work, but is only presented by the violin in its entirety at the very end.

Yevgeny Sudbin made his sensational début on disc with a programme of sonatas by Scarlatti, but soon continued with recordings of music by later composers from his own country of birth, Russia. 2010 saw Sudbin’s return to the 18th century, with a Haydn recital which has confirmed his reputation as a highly versatile musician, ‘whose exquisite nuances, shimmering colours and rare rhetorical power make him an ideal Haydn interpreter.’(Pizzicato) This acclaimed disc was described as ‘truly a class act’ by Classic FM Magazine; an act which Sudbin now follows up with the first disc in a series of beethoven’s piano concertos. Opening with the composer’s final two works in the genre, Sudbin shares the stage with Minnesota Orchestra and Osmo Vänskä, a team whose beethoven credentials are assured after their recent cycle of the nine symphonies – ‘unquestionably one the great beethoven cycles’ according to the website ClassicsToday.com. If beethoven’s first works in the concerto genre are indebted to Mozart, the composer had definitely found his own feet by the time of Piano Concerto No.4 in G major. This is evident from the very beginning of the work where, instead of the expected orchestral introduction, the solo piano enters, signalling the intimate and
lyrical quality of the work. No less innovative is Piano Concerto No.5 in E flat major – by many considered the finest of all piano concertos. Giving the timpani an unusually prominent and crucial role, this work is majestic and at times even martial in character, something which in English-speaking countries has earned it the nickname ‘Emperor’.

by gathering six symphonic poems under the title Má Vlast (‘My Country‘), Bedřich Smetana created what is probably the most extensive portrayal of any geographical region in the history of music. In his cycle (composed between 1874 and 1879) Smetana combined the new genre of symphonic poem, a term coined by Liszt in 1854, with the then highly fashionable ideals of nationalistic music. The result was an instant success – not just on Smetana‘s home ground, but also internationally – and the various parts (especially The Moldau) still remain favourites in concert halls all over the world. Female warriors, Christian reformers, medieval fortresses and peasant festivals – all of these appear in the broad fresco in which Smetana depicted his beloved bohemia. Ranging from idyllic to grandiose, the music is here performed by Claus Peter Flor and the Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra, a team whose recording of the Asrael Symphony by Smetana‘s compatriot Josef Suk made great impact on its release in 2009.

While planning our approach to this recording, we decided to broaden our interpretative horizons through interaction with beethoven specialist Dr. Stewart Young, whose decades of research into his music has been ongoing and is not limited to the thorny tempo issues surrounding particularly his metronome marks. Whilst all interpretative decisions were of course our own, we benefitted from the open interaction provided by an ‘outside’ pair of ears in discussion, rehearsal and the sessions themselves.
We especially placed value upon the interpretative legacy on things beethovenian that his pupil and highly respected pianist friend Carl Czerny assembled in his extensive 1846 notes on the “Correct Performance” of all beethoven’s keyboard works.

Carl Nielsen’s blåsekvintett from 1922 is a key work in the wind quintet repertoire, and it is considered to be one of Nielsen’s most important chamber music works. Johan Fernström had a central position in Swedish music around the time of World War II, and completed his blåsekvintett, op. 59 in 1943.

Yakov Zak was one of the greatest names in Soviet piano performing and teaching but remained little known abroad, with the possible exception of the United States. From a Jewish family in Odessa like Emil Gilels, three years his junior, he achieved skills worthy of the latter with whom he frequently played in duo. A student of Heinrich Neuhaus, 1st Prize at the Chopin Competition in 1937, with special mention for his interpretation of the mazurkas, his vast repertoire concentrated on beethoven – late Sonatas, Diabelli Variations – Schubert, Chopin, of course, brahms with the two Concertos, Rachmaninov's 4th Concerto – preceding Michelangeli – Prokofiev and Medtner, whom he defended with Gilels. Endowed with Olympian technique and a clear, solid sense of form, he remains a model, a humanist whose current discography is amazingly meagre. He died of a heart attack on 28 June 1976, the day after a brutal police interrogation.

For the first time in blu-ray, bel Air Classiques present Petipa’s extravaganza, The Pharaoh’s Daughter, in the stunning production by Pierre Lacotte. This Russian ballet enjoys a special place in history. Premiered in 1862, this grand spectacle, which lasted four hours and featured a cast of 400, was Petipa’s first truly successful ballet and secured his future in St. Petersburg, where he went on to become the most influential choreographer of the 19th century. Until recently, The Pharaoh’s Daughter was also one of Petipa’s lost ballets; it hadn’t been performed since 1928. In 2000 the French choreographer Pierre Lacotte premièred a restored version at the bolshoi Theatre, after much research into the original, resulting in a shorter although still sumptuous extravaganza.

Opting for the French-language version of Orpheus, David Alagna was faced with the task of achieving an appropriately subtle adaptation. In a plot transposed to the present day, Eurydice dies in a car accident on the day of her wedding and Orpheus's quest for his beloved is a dream beginning and ending at the cemetery. No happy ending in this interpretation, but a new approach to characterisation: Amore, sung by a baritone, becomes a funeral parlour employee and Orpheus' guide. Orpheus, of course, loses his loved one forever by turning to look back. World famous tenor Roberto Alagna throws himself body and soul into this production.

Gioacchino Rossini's Petite Messe Solennelle was written in 1863, "the last", the composer called it, of my "péchés de vieillesse" (sins of old age). For its first performance (1864) Rossini arranged the work with only two pianos and harmonium. Partly for fear that it would be done anyway after his death, Rossini discreetly orchestrated the Petite Messe Solennelle during 1866-67, without losing its candor and subtlety. The resulting version had its first public performance on 28 February 1869, three months after the composer's death.

The Requiem, held by some to have been written in memory of Schumann, by others in memory of the composer's mother, is scored for soprano and baritone soli, SATB chorus and orchestra and musically marks a turning point in compositional technique by which Brahms influenced the entire world of music. The way he arranged the seven movements and composed individual passages demonstrates his creative thinking, free from musical as well as Christian dogma.

Sleeping Beauty, Tchaikovsky's brightest, most festive and joyous work, is also the chief work and masterpiece of St Petersburg choreographer Marius Petipa. The Soviet ballet historian,
Yuri Slonimsky, put the significance of the féerie in a nutshell, characterising it as the "encyclopaedia of classical dance". Both the dramatic build-up, which contrives to constantly develop of the dance events in a single, huge span of tension, from the prologue, through four huge adagios and right up to the final apotheosis, and the inexhaustible wealth of inventiveness and diversity and the perfection of the individual dance and step sequences, are seen as exemplary of the St. Petersburg ballet style of the late 19th century.
Grigorovich's Sleeping Beauty is an example of a creative conflict and metamorphosis as reconstruction: "We have breathed new life into the principles of dancing, symphonic dramatisation and harked back to Petipa at the same time. […] Pompous retrospectives were replaced by performances where the human world of the protagonists was the main motivating force of the story line, the focus upon which the choreographer's thoughts and emotions could concentrate."
It was certainly remarkable that only a year after all the Mozart anniversary performances (1991), the Ludwigsburg Castle festival decided on a Magic Flute production. (The premiere of the production recorded here took place on 26 August 1992.) This was no easy task for director Axel Manthey and conductor Wolfgang Gonnenwein. With clear, naive images combining in a beautiful, dramatic play of colors, Manthey succeeds in teasing out the different aspects of this opera. The larger-than-life symbols (snake, lightning, tree) also help with this.
"This is visually enchanting, yet at the same time avoids overlooking the characters' frailties; there are really moving moments, and sometimes one holds one's breath in wonder (...) That particular Magic Flute note of marvel and surprise is rarely sounded so clearly as here in Ludwigsburg (...) The conductor Wolfgang Gonnenwein creates real suspense and excitement with music of effervescence and vitality. Avoiding all obsequiousness as well as sentimentality, leaving enough time for Mozart's heart-tones to calmly unfold and resonate, Gonnenwein gives this Magic Flute an inner tempo, which leaves no place for portentousness." This Vienna State Opera production of Strauss's opera of revenge, torment, violence and horror, is directed by Harry Kupfer as a tale of tyranny and bloodshed. His bold and terrifying concept is reiterated in Hans Schavernoch's cavernous decor. He opens with an abattoir, the five maids piling dripping chunks of carcasses into borrows, and closes with a more human slaughterhouse as Orestes raises his bloody hands to heaven.
Conducting his first Strauss opera, Claudio Abbado wrings a harrowing performance from the peerless Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra. The music is infused with an eeriness and neurosis that heightens the emotions on stage. In the title role, Eva Marton gives an uninhibited and exultant performance, matched by that of Brigitte Fassbaender as her mother, Klytemnestra, murderer and widow of Agamemnon. Bejewelled from head to foot and consumed by the flames of guilt-ridden insanity, Fassbaender sings as if truly possessed. The more lyrical role of Chrysothemis is sung by Cheryl Studer, with a ragged and single-minded Orestes played by Franz Grundheber.
P. I. Tchaikovsky is considered to be Russia's great symphonic composer. In his music he achieved a synthesis of the national musical language of Russia and the compositional forms of the western European Romantics. His most famous ballets enjoy a position of honor in the Classical Ballet repertoire on account of their melodic intensity and instrumental brilliance. In the fairy tale "The Nutcracker and the King of the Mice" written by the German Romantic E. T. A. Hoffmann and published in 1814, on which Tchaikovsky's ballet is based, Christmas provides the realistic setting for a fantastic plot. Fiction and reality are woven together by means of strange and wondrous occurrences to produce a fascinating and unfathomable labyrinth. Both Hoffmann and Tchaikovsky, who began to compose the ballet in his fiftieth year, could identify with the literary figure of the watchmaker Drosselmeier, who gives order to his life through his work. In 1999, exactly 107 years - to the day - after the first performance in St. Petersburg, Patrice Bart's choreography of Tchaikovsky's worldwide success The Nutcracker was premiered at the Staatsoper Unter den Linden in Berlin. Bart placed a prologue before the ballet in which Marie is abducted as a child and in which everything is placed in a modern context.
Rossini was only 24 years old when in 1816 he wrote his seventeenth and most famous opera, The Barber of Seville, in an astonishing three weeks. Michael Hampei’s humorous direction of this 1988 live-performance at the Schwetzinger Festspiele stands out with its high tempo that makes for a highly exuberant production. Ezio Frigerio’s appealing stage setting and Mauro Paganoi’s colourful costumes heighten the comic effect.

In the role of Eurydice, Natalie Dessay begins atonce with a display of vocal and verbal pyrotechnics, which are then taken up by Yann Beuron as Orpheus. Together they give us an idea of the developments to follow. Dancers and singers melt into a unit. The stage setting and an unconventional choreography sparkle with inventiveness. When Pluto, for example, arrives on skis from the underworld onto Mt. Olympus and Offenbach quotes the famous can-can right in the
middle of Pluto’s aria, it seems to be a parody of his own work. The production offers a wealth of material for modern interpretations of this operetta full to the brim with ironic sideswipes at morality and immorality. Thus we see a bored Eurydice lying on the sofa in her apartment as she zaps her way through the TV channels, constantly looking for diversion, showing us how timeless an opera buffa can really be. Sometimes she sings upside down, sometimes hopping around – a vocal masterpiece. Laurent Naouri also captivates in the role of Jupiter and, costumed as a fl y, demonstrates his vocal and acting talent with Jacques Offenbach’s "Buzz" aria.
