Overflow valves are among the features that must prevent the accumulation of higher pressures in installations than they weredesigned for. Characteristic for an overflow valve in comparison to a safety valve is the fact that an overflow valve regularlyoverflows, whereas a safety valve actually should never blow off.

As an example, the situation with certain pumps can be used where the outlet pressure of the pump should not increase toomuch when the demand falls off. An overflow valve in the bypass pipe of the relevant pump could then discharge thepressure increase to the inlet or suction side of the pump. Contrary to a safety valve, where the excess pressure is alwaysdischarged from the system, the overflow valve generally keeps all media within the system.

Terms such as overflow, upstream pressure regulator, expansion valve and safety valve are confused. Please review theguideline below to be sure of e correct selection:

Term Function Features SelectionOverflow Prevention of pressure increase Opens regularly as a result of

a decreased demandin the system

Overflow valve, reliefvalvesand safety relief valves

Upstream pressureregulator

Maintains pressure on the inlet side Keeps pressure on the inlet sideconstant, functions as a pressure reducing valvein inverted form

Upstream pressure regulator (on request)

Expansion valve Prevention of pressure increase Sometimes opens due to expansion ofthe medium as a result of temperaturechanges, here it concerns smallquantities

reliefvalves andsafety relief valves

Safety Safeguards against prohibited pressure increase Only opens if all othersafeguards have failed toprevent a hazardous situation

Relief, safety reliefand full lift safety valves

It is apparent from the table that safety valves with a low-lifting opening characteristic can be used as an overflow orexpansion valve as well. Should a high degree of pressure fluctuations be expected with the application of a safety valve, it isrecommended to contact one of our product specialists. In such situations, the determination of the type and size is ofimportance for the correct functioning of the valve.

General and technical information regarding safety valves are specified in the section Safety valves.

In hot water central heating installations (mainly during spring and autumn when theheat demand is low), irritating flow noise could occur as a result of the increased pumppressure, which arises due to the closing of the radiator valves.Due to the installation of a differential overflow valve, these irritating noises can besignificantly reduced. In installations with a gas fired boiler, the minimum circulation flow is maintained, evenif the radiator valves are closed.

OperationThe bypass will open if the differential pressure is higher than the set value for theoverflow valve.
