EARLY EDUCATON

• Born in Kasur Punjab (1926)• Bachelors degree from GC Lahore in 1946.• B.Sc in Electrical Engineering from PU Lahore in

1946.• In 1951 he traveled USA on scholarship where

he earned an MS degree in 1952 form North Caroline University.

Career in IAEA

- 1957 he was serving as Research Associate in nuclear engineering division in Argon National Labs.- As a Senior IAEA staff member he also organized more then 20 International Technical and Scientific conferences & seminars on heavy water.- He was also given nick name in IAEA as “Reactor khan”- He was one of the team member when USA tested her first cooled nuclear reaction .

The Nuclear Father

- In October 1965 the FM Pakistan ZA Bhutto meat with Dr Khan for the first time.- Mr. Bhutto arranged Mr. Khan’s meeting with President of Pakistan Ayub khan on 11th of December in London.- On December 1971 Mr. Munir was appointed Chairman PAEC.- Within two months of Mr. khan as DG PAEC Pakistan Nuclear plan was on PM desk.

Development of Nuclear Weapons

• In March 1974 Dr Munir Ahmad khan called an meeting and for the first time he used officially word nuclear “Bomb”

• This lead to formation of DTD Directorate of technical development. Along with “WAH group” who were given green signal by government.

• In February 1975 Mr. khan obtained an approval from PM Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto of Rs 450m.

Development of Nuclear Weapons

• From 1972 onwards, PAEC under Munir Ahmad Khan ran over 20 labs and projects on the nuclear program, in 15-20 Directorates .

• This includes uranium exploration, mining, refining, conversion, enrichment, fuel fabrication, reprocessing to nuclear reactors and nuclear weapons development programs .

Project -706

• Mr. Khan was direct supervisor of this project.• The project mainly focused on the development

of the atomic bomb by using high enriched uranium technology .

• Pakistan's weapons production until the successful cold test of design of a nuclear device on March 11, 1983 conducted by PAEC under Munir Ahmad Khan .

Diplomatic Reactor

• In 1981Pakistani ISI secretly learned that Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi has given green signal to launch a surprise attack on Pakistan's nuclear installation under the mission code" Attack on Kahuta"

• Munir Ahmad Khan was attending IAEA general conference along with its Indian counterpart Dr. Raja Ramana.

Diplomatic Reactor

• Munir Ahmad Khan met with Dr. Raja Ramana at the Imperial Hotel at Vienna where his Indian counterpart did confirmed about the possible surgical attack on Pakistani nuclear facilities.

• After the intense conversation between both Chairmen, Dr. Raja Ramana gave Munir Ahmad Khan his assurance that he will talk to the Prime Minister about the nuclear issue once he gets to India .

Civilian Nuclear Program

• Munir Khan also upgraded the Pakistan Research Reactor-1 (PARR-1) from 5MW to 10 MW .

• And set up the 27 Kw PARR-2 research reactor at PINSTECH.

• Munir Ahmad Khan upgraded the Reactor School and in 1976 established the Centre for Nuclear Studies . Today known as PIEAS.

Retirement life

• In 1991 he finally retired and went back to IAEA , Austria .

• And finally rested in peace on 22 April 1999.
