Theme Park Writing Task: Booklet Overview

You will be writing a persuasive leaflet for a theme park.

BUT ...

Your leaflet will have to show that you understand persuasion so we are not just going to start doing some drawings and putting down any old ideas – we are going to write an amazing and totally persuasive leaflet.

HOW?

Your task is to:

✓ Come up with some spectacular ideas for the theme park – think about what ideas are there and what can you do there? ✓ Use as many sneaky persuasive techniques as you can – remember rule of three, repetition, slogans and all the other tricks. ✓ Most importantly you must persuade your reader that your theme park is the BEST! – How can you convince your readers?

Plan out your ideas carefully

THINK ... PALL: Purpose, Audience, Language, Layout.

✰ PURPOSE: What you are trying to do.

✰ AUDIENCE: Who your theme park is aimed at.

✰ LANGUAGE: What language features you will use like slogans, alliteration and repetition.

✰ LAYOUT: How you are going to set out your leaflet and what colours, graphics and pictures you will use. Think about the leaflets you have looked at and ways that you can advertise your park.

Create your own theme park

1. Theme park – make up a name and some rides

✰ Try to use some alliteration to make the rides sound fun!

✰ What is a good theme park name?

✰ Will your theme park have animals as well as rides?

2. Slogan – What is your catchphrase? Can you make it rhyme?

3. Rhetorical questions – this is a question that doesn’t need an answer but gets the reader thinking. So you could write: ‘What are you waiting for?’ – Don’t forget the question mark!

Draw a plan/map of your theme park. Name each of the rides. You will need to include:

● Restaurants (themed to your park)● Adult rides● Children Rides● Water Park● Hotel● Entertainment area.

Read through the persuasive techniques and match them up with the correct definition.

Persuasive technique Definition

Alliteration The writer’s opinion. Eg. This is the best park you will ever visit!

Facts Words that play on the readers’ emotions. Eg. Would you want your child to miss out on a fun day?

Opinions Words close together that each have the same sound at the start of the word. Eg. Fabulous flumes.The writer’s opinion. Eg. This is the best park you will ever visit!

Rhetorical question Listing three examples for emphasis. Eg. We have fantastic food, amazing rides and cool animals.

Emotive language Things that have been proven and correct. Eg. A recent survey conducted showed that teenagers spend most of their weekends at theme parks.

Statistics A question that doesn’t require an answer from the reader.Using numbers to prove a point. Eg. 86% of people who came to the theme park said they would return again.

Tripling Using numbers to prove a point. Eg. 86% of people who came to the theme park said they would return again.

SHOW NOT TELL

When describing some of the feelings your customers may experience at your theme park, it can be easy to just rely on straightforward adjectives, e.g. ‘Time to get excited!’INSTEAD you can use show not tell. Below is a table with some emotions. Show the reader what your body will experience when feeling that emotion.

Look through the leaflet above. 1. What persuasive techniques can you find?2. How is this leaflet layed out? Why is this effective?3. Why are colours and pictures important?

Research more leaflets online (if you can) and see what they all include in their leaflets.Make a list below

Design your leaflet. Remember to use the planning sheet you have completed to help you to write your leaflet.

Success CriteriaYou will need to:

Lesson 10/11

Radio Adverts

Radio adverts are a very good way to get your theme park known by lots of different people. The most important thing to remember is that your target audience cannot see you! You will need to use your voice to really show how amazing your theme park is.

Try listening to some radio adverts online or on the radio. Make notes about what makes them effective.

Create your own radio advert

You are going to create your own radio advert for your theme park.

Success Criteria

● Write a script - what would you like to say about your theme park?

● Be persuasive - use a variety of DAFOREST techniques● Include the name of your theme park and the slogan.● Be expressive with your voice - really think about what it will

sound like to the audience. You want them to come to your theme park so show how exciting it is to go there with your expression and tone.

You can record and send your radio adverts to your teachers via email or on their google classroom.
