Since this is “back to school” season, I decided to write my article about this important first day – a day of renewing some old friendships, meeting the new teach-

ers, finding your locker and showing your peers that you are on top of your game. The game of fashion and style and popu-larity. Students are “marking their territory” and the teach-ers are, too – drawing a line in the sand of discipline. (At least for the first few days) But Jonn Winters beat me to it with his interesting back to school article in The Times Herald.

So I suppose I’ll have to fall back on a subject that I know best – the first day of school for little Joey Williams. To-

ward the end of the first grade, my family moved, requir-ing me to attend the old Atkinson School, a big two story brick building which was getting quite tired and would be replaced the following year. Upon arrival that first day, the principal introduced me to my new second grade class! “But I’m in the first grade”, I quickly reported. Nothing I said convinced the teacher that the school had made a mistake. Perhaps I looked wiser than my years, or taller, or something. But I chose to believe it was what I was wearing – my new Roy Rogers cowboy suit, includ-ing hat and guns. (Cap pistols, of course). I was “the Man”! When the students took turns reading aloud, I didn’t know the words. When we were told to write several sentences on our paper and “sign” our name at the bottom, I immediately enlightened the teacher, “I can’t write sentences but I can “print” my name at the top! After two or three hours of this “under-achievement”, I was finally escorted to Miss King’s first grade class.

Having been mistaken for an older man, I was “lookin’ good and walkin’ tall” in my new cowboy outfit. Miss King suggested I remove my hat and leave the guns in the hall. But I was still full of pride and arrogance. I continued to be “the man”, or so I thought. During the afternoon recess, I stopped by the restroom. That’s when that “bubble of pride” burst like a cheap balloon! My pant zipper on that magnificent cowboy outfit came off the track and all attempts to get it back on failed, leaving me feeling somewhat “exposed”! Even that little tab on the zipper broke off. There could be only one “plan of action” – pretending nothing had happened and “covering up” the problem. I went back in the class, holding my hands over the offending opening, but not feeling quite as “tall and handsome”. When class was over, I walked out, holding my new “leather” book satchel just below my waist, until I could get home and just throw that cowboy outfit away - guns, hat and zipper.

I’ve tried to think of what lesson in life I may have learned from that unusual first day. Number three: Don’t let someone talk you in to doing something that is far beyond your ability. Number two: Don’t pretend to look and act like someone you’re not. You will be “All Hat and No Cattle”. Number one: Never buy a poor quality, Roy Rogers, cowboy suit with a cheap zipper. It could “show who you really are” - without notice!

JoePost Script: Actually, I never learned from those mistakes. I still end up doing things I’m told I can’t do, and I may still be all hat and no cattle. But I will never, ever wear a silly Roy Rogers cowboy suit again. They no longer make them in my size!

Page 6 H The Coweta Shopper H August 7, 2013 H www.thecowetashopper.com

When considering the safe and comfort-able operation of your car or truck, one of the strongest in uences is the outside envi-ronment in which you are driving. A major variable in that environment is the contact your vehicle has with the road. If you have ever driven on ice, through water, or in sand or mud, you know what I am talking about. e lower amount of traction those surfaces provide drastically e ects the handling, safe-ty, and comfort of your ride. Critical aspects of driving, such as accelerating, turning, rid-ing comfortably or uncomfortably and most importantly stopping, all depend on what is called the tire contact patch or the amount and the shape – the “footprint” - of tire rub-ber that is in contact with the road surface.

Also realize that the feeling you get from the surface you are driving on is mostly a function of your only contact with that sur-face – your tires! Some of the tire character-istics that a ect ride quality are the compo-sition of the rubber, the width and height of the tire, the tread pa ern, and tread depth, and, of course, the pressure of the air inside the tires. Tire air pressure is the topic of our discussion this time around.

In order to drive within the engineered parameters of your vehicle and experience the ride characteristics you expect from it, you need to insure that the air pressure in all the tires is set at what the people who de-signed the car, the tires, and the roads have speci ed. e good news is that it is simpler than ever to do this. You don’t even have to wade through that confusing Owner’s Man-

CAR CARE ESSENTIALS

Tire Infl ation (part 1) …

ual. Just look at the label on the driver’s door jam or door post of your vehicle. ere, by law, is a listing of what air pressure is recom-mended for the front and rear tires of your vehicle. Like so many other things in life, too much is not good and too li le is not good either. e amount listed on the label is just right. e in ation pressure that is molded into the sidewall of the tire is the maximumthe tire will safely hold. It is not the recom-mended pressure. Any given tire of a speci c size can be used on many di erent vehicles so the pressure referenced on the tire is not speci c to any particular car. e pressures on the door jamb label are speci c to your car regardless of what size, style, and brand of tire you are using. As the operator and controller of that 4000 pound weapon on wheels, it is your responsibility to maintain your vehicle in safe operating condition. Tire pressures are one of the easiest safety se ings to understand and maintain.

4 Ways to Create a “Cool” HomeSchool may have started, but the calendar and weather still says it’s summertime.

I don’t know about anywhere else in the world, but here in the SOUTH, we call it Dog

Days.

One of the definitions when I “googled” dog days of summer had this: Dog Days

1. The hot, sultry period of summer between early July and early September.

2. A period of stagnation.

Anyway you define it, it means Hot Weather!

Recently our main central A/C unit died on us. In June! Before the monsoons hit! It

was Hot!

Central AC has spoiled us and I know my ancestors lived with-

out central A/C but what can I say, I’m spoiled. I had to get

creative about how we were to remain cool while the new

unit was being ordered, and get on the schedule for the

replacement.

2 WEEKS! Did I say it was Hot?

Of course, opening the windows, using the ceiling fans

and floor fans as well as whole house fan to pull any cool

morning air through was a big part of staying cooler, but when

the heat becomes oppressive, it’s nice to add some lightness and

brightness indoors with décor.

Here are some of my favorite ways to accomplish a “cool” décor for hot days:

Area Rugs1. . Roll them up and store them away. Let the bare floors shine! If you

can’t bring yourself to have a bare floor, then exchange the fuzzy, wooly, soft rug

for a flat weave like a natural jute, or an indoor/outdoor rug. It will instantly lift

the heaviness of the room.

Windows Treatments2. . Removing heavy drapes and replacing them with white

or ivory drapes, blinds or sheers will brighten a room and still help control any

direct sunlight that may heat up a room.

Bedding3. . Heavy dark bedding is great for a cozy look in the cold months, but

in the heat of the year, exchange them for lighter weight and colors to create a

cool breeze feeling in your home. I like to use white sheets as my topper because

they are so easy to wash and put back on the bed. Or try using a light duvet

cover without the comforter inside during the hot months for an inexpensive

solution.

Accessories4. . Reduce the amount of accessories for the summer to create emp-

ty table top space. Then bring in a few cool blue, green and turquoise pillows,

light throws and accessories to sprinkle a little bit of summer fun throughout

the house.

We survived the 2 weeks and are enjoying the cool air that it artificially produced to

make us comfortable, but seeing my window treatments and bedding at the end of the

bed flowing in the breeze of the ceiling fans also helps keep me cool.

The old west just got a little closer to Coweta County last year when G.T. Amell rode into town – straight from Tombstone, AZ. Since his wife, Regina, has fam-ily in this area, they have chosen Newnan for their re-tirement. And we’re sure glad to have them here.

Tombstone is a very small town but a hugely popular tourist destina-tion. Dressing in period attire, G.T. and Regina min-gled with, and greeted visitors, provided photo ops and welcomed them to their little town. And this provided a perfect opportunity to share their faith in God through a tract ministry to folks from many parts of the world.

G.T. seems to be the “authority” when it comes to western movies. He can tell you what star was in which movie while adding some little-known facts to the con-versation. “A good western must include the “Five S’s”, says G.T. “Scenery, sheriff, stagecoach, sweetheart and saloon.” But his real “God given” talent as an artist, combined with his love of the old west, has led to the creation of a group of exquisite graph-

ite portraits featuring some of the most famous Cowboy movie stars ever. It starts with Buck Jones and goes through Tom Selleck and Sam Elliott with the likes of Randolph Scott, Gary Cooper, John Wayne and Glenn Ford. His portraits are available for purchase. For in-formation on how to get in touch with Mr. Amell, you can email us here at [email protected].

So, if you see a “proper” western gentleman sporting a great looking mustache, and has an attractive lady on his arm, it’s probably G.T. and Regina Amell. And let’s make them feel welcome to our great community!

Steve Horton, founder and owner of The Coweta County Shopper 1989- 2008, died recently in Kentucky. Our thoughts are with Darlene, Brian, Lar-ry, Nick and their families.

This month The Shopper is begin-ning its 25th year in business. We’d like to remember Steve and thank all the former employees and advertisers for 24 great years!

There’s been innumerable changes since Steve and Darlene Horton moved to Newnan in 1989 and started a small direct mail advertising business in their Smokey Road home. There’s been more than half a dozen locations, many sales people and office personnel throughout the years. There were a lot of all night work sessions with a couple of Mac Plus computers with 9 inch monochrome screens, cut and paste with hot wax, long road trips delivering page layouts to the press in South Geor-gia, waiting on press run and the long ride back to the Newnan post of-fice. It started as a small family run business with sons Brian and Larry putting in time over the years. Steve, a former pharmaceutical sales rep, was the top salesman for a number of years. Scott Shefelton was sales-

man, ad builder and office man-ager for 20+ years. His brother in law Rusty is still selling ads - 24+ years. Steve retired in 2009 and son Larry ran things for a while. Joe Williams bought The Shop-per in 2010, changed the name to The Coweta Shopper and added some local content with The Arm-chair Gardener, What’s In Your Garage, Employee Spotlights, and interesting articles from time to time on locals.

We look forward to continu-ing and improving The Shopper ~ founded by Steve Horton in 1989.

When I was seven years old I convinced myself that I had leukemia. I watched

a special hour-long episode of Di erent Strokes where a seemingly healthy child about my age was diagnosed with the disease. at was all it took – if he could catch it for no apparent reason, then I too was a likely candidate.

e next day at school I was very quiet in class and kept my head down during story time. I refused to participate in gym class for fear that my condition would worsen. I told the teachers I was sick, but did not reveal the complexity of my condition. One of the teachers sent me to the principal’s o ce for proof of my sickness. When the thermometer read normal I shrugged my shoulders, but continued to cry. e disease was not registering in my system yet I thought. e principal made me eat a bowl of Corn Flakes, refusing to believe that I was not hungry.

is continued for several days and I felt that it was a ma er of time before my parents or one of the teachers would announce the news of my discovered disease. Suddenly, while si ing cross-legged in reading group with my head in my hands, it happened. “Kelli Bowman,” the principal announced from the entry of our classroom, “You need to come to the o ce. ere’s someone here to see you.”

is was it; someone was here to break the news to me, probably the doctor himself a er reviewing my physical le. “We didn’t notice it at rst,” he would say, “but your body is laden with leukemia.” I stood up slowly, with my head hung and walked toward the o ce alongside the principal. She tried to comfort me, telling me I was not in trouble, but I knew the truth, I could feel the pity and it annoyed me coming from a woman who pushes Corn Flakes on terminally ill children.

I chewed nervously at my ngernails as we entered the o ce. A man in a suit sat behind the desk usually occupied by the o ce secretary. “Hi Kelli,” he said in a pleasant voice reserved for such occasions as the unveiling of your terminal illness. “I’m Dr. Cooper,” he announced. As he said this I sucked in air and swallowed a ngernail that I had been chewing. I coughed with such force he leaned over the desk and pa ed me on the back. A er gaining my composure, I slumped into the seat across from him. My head was spinning; I remained occupied

by the ngernail lodged in my throat. For a moment I forgot all about my leukemia until I looked up and saw the concern on his face.

“I guess you’re wondering why you’re here,” he said. I looked at him blankly, o ering no opinions even though his mission was clear to me.

“I’m here to talk about your feelings, and why you have been blue lately,” he said. I kept looking at him skeptically, while rubbing at my throat to coax the ngernail down. He tilted his head and raised his eyebrows giving the signature look of an adult who expects an answer.

“ ere’s a ngernail stuck in my throat,” I said as I watched through my overgrown bangs for his reaction and possible medical advice.

Surely any obstruction to my breathing could not be good for my leukemia.

He leaned back in his chair and tapped his pen on the desk. “ at must be very painful,” he said with no real trace of concern. No advice, no phone call to his o ce to report this new development, just an ordinary reaction as if I simply showed him a paper cut. at was my rst indication that this was not really a doctor. A real doctor would be concerned. is man clearly had no idea about breathing obstructions or stomach lacerations caused by the swallowing of a ngernail. I decided to get to the heart of the ma er.

“Do you know Dr. Pelton? He’s my Doctor,” I said.

“No, honey, I don’t know him, I’m not that kind of a Doctor. I’m a Psychologist,” he said drawing the word out slowly, punctuating every syllable for me to hear.

Aha! I knew it; he was not a real Doctor!

We talked for a while about my family, friends, schoolwork, all the things that typically cause a child to withdraw and cry in class for four days straight. I never once mentioned my leukemia because I gured out by then I must not be sick in that way. I was just crazy I guess. What a relief; I wasn’t going to die an untimely death a er all, unless, of course, I su ered internal bleeding from the ngernail I had swallowed. I think I may have seen something like that on a special hour-long episode of e Facts of Life.

ROAD TO RECOVERYVolunteer Drivers Needed

If you are looking for a great way to donate some of your time, consider becoming a volunteer driver for The American Cancer Society’s Road to Recovery Program. This volunteer-based program provides free trans-portation to cancer patients to and from their treatment locations. You can make a real difference in the life of someone who needs regular can-cer treatments. It is hard enough to have cancer without having to worry about how you will get to your appointments.

Being a Road to Recovery volunteer is so easy. And the rewards are great. You can choose how often and what day of the week you would like to drive, and what distance you would be willing to travel. Most patients’ appointments are local in Coweta County. The training is free. Require-ments include a good driving record, a valid driver’s license, auto insur-ance, and a vehicle that is in good working condition.

Join this meaningful program and make someone’s life a little easier. You might fi nd it makes a difference in your own life as well. For more info on becoming a volunteer driver, contact Road to Recovery volunteer coor-dinator, Emily Stastny at 770-378-1616 or email her at [email protected].

Gary SikesFolks the time is fast approaching

for our local teams plus the college and pro teams as well to take to the gridiron and do ba le. In fact for the colleges we cover August 31st is a huge day. We have two major matchups and one re-ally important one. Number one is on the Flats at the Bobby Dodd stadium when the Yellow Jackets will play host to Elon. Now most teams schedule an easy out of conference game each sea-son. One would think that this is the one for GT. en I remember 2 years ago when Middle Tenn. State came to town as Tech’s light weight for the season and things went South for the Jackets ~ they lost. We are hoping that does not happen this year. e other 2 match ups are major clashes between the SEC and e ACC. At 5:30 p.m. in the Georgia Dome, the Va. Tech Hokies will be facing what could be a disaster as they take on the 2 year in a row Na-tional title winner the Crimson Tide of Alabama. Now this could be closer than I think because Va. Tech has a good pro-gram and a great coach in Frank Beamer plus he has great athletes year a er year. (note: the Hokies will have to come back to the Atl during the season to be hosted by the Jackets of Georgia Tech, I think this one will be a be er match up for Va Tech. I might add a much improved GT, with Ted Roop back as the defensive coordinator I think our Jackets are on the road to recovery on the “D” side of the line of scrimmage.) While on this game let me add that in my most humble opinion, the Tide will make it to the title game and will play the Buckeyes of e Ohio State Uni-versity. Just my opinion. e Buckeyes will not have near the trouble ge ing to the dance oor as will the men in Crim-son. ey just do not have to play the same caliber teams which are found in the SEC and they are the only team in their conference which could make it to the Title game, and in the SEC we have 3 which could make it and they are: Ala-bama, e Bull-Dawgs of Georgia and with a stretch of luck the Gamecocks

of South Carolina. ( is team has the one edge which every team should look for, Steve Spurrier, the Old Ball Coach.) Spurrier in my opinion is one of the best college coaches in the game today and a team had best be ready when taking the eld against him.

Ant the last game of the day which will draw as much if not more than the Tide/Hokie match up in the Ga. Dome will be aired on National TV when the Dawgs of Georgia travel to Death Val-ley (jr.) to be hosted by the Tigers of Clemson. With the other 2 games being really one sided, I think that the Dog/Tigers match up could be the most en-tertaining of the day for a fan just want-ing to see some good to great football. is game will match what I think are two of the best o enses in the country. e Dogs have the best running back tandem in football in Mitchell and Gur-ley (both of these young men are soph-omores and will be mentioned in the heisman race before they end their stay in Athens.) On the other sideline the Tigers of Clemson have a QB receiver relationship in QB Taji Boyd and his fa-

vorite target Sammy Watkins. (Watkins is rated as one of the best receivers in the country). Neither of these 2 teams are noted (this year) for strong defense so expect a shoot-out and the team which has the ball last to win the game. (It is going to take 38 points to take the win). Next week I am going to high-lite each of our local teams, who they open with and how they fared against them last year plus injury up-dates from each coach..Not pictured in the August 31st match ups are Dabo Sweeney from Clemson and Nick Saban from Alabama.
