CCOP-AIST/GSJ-MGI 2nd DelSEA Workshop on Coastal Erosion and Geological Assessment of Delta Areas in
Southeast and East Asia 4-6 December 2007, Bandung, Indonesia
CCOP (Coordinating Committee for Geoscience Programmes in East and
Southeast Asia) has on-going activities with AIST/GSJ, Japan in 2007. DelSEA project (Integrated Geological Assessment for Deltas in Southeast and East Asia), which is one of Geo-Environment programs, has been conducted jointly with IGCP-475 DeltaMAP project for annual meetings and seminars in order to foster exchange of modern knowledge on deltas, Quaternary geology, sequence stratigraphy, and geological coastal management and to enhance joint study for better understanding deltaic coasts and geological assessment for coastal management.
The activity in collaboration between CCOP, Marine Geological Institute of
Indonesia (MGI) and AIST/ Geological Survey of Japan (GSJ) was organized in Bandung, Indonesia on 4-6 December 2007 under the title “2nd CCOP-AIST/GSJ-MGI DelSEA Workshop on Coastal Erosion and Geological Assessment of Delta Areas in Southeast and East Asia.” The workshop in conjunction with field excursions was attended by 9 representative participants from Member Countries of CCOP; Indonesia, Japan, Korea, Vietnam, Philippines, Cambodia, Thailand and Malaysia. In addition, 34 local participants from various institutes of Indonesia were attending this workshop (Attached 1).

THE WORKSHOP
An indoor workshop was scheduled on 4 December 2007 with in-kind contribution from MGI in form of meeting room and facility. The workshop started with Opening Speech by Mr. Bambang Dwiyanto, Permanent Representative of Indonesia to CCOP, Head, Geological Agency, Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (MEMR) and Welcome Speech by Mr. Subaktian Lubis, Director, Marine Geological Institute, Indonesia
During the workshop, Keynote address on An Overview of the Coastal
Erosion of Deltas in Southeast and East Asia was given by Dr. Yoshiki Saito, CCOP-DelSEA Project leader and participant from each member countries except Cambodia were presented the status of coastal erosion and mitigation measures exist within their own countries. Moreover, technical papers on coastal change study in Indonesia were presented by researchers from MGI (Attached 2).
THE EXCURSION The presentation session was followed by one and a half day field excursion
along the coast of Cimanuk Delta toward Cirebon, Western Java. The excursions show a significant of human induced coastal change on both accretion of newly delta development and coastal erosion. Valuable discussion and exchanging knowledge were activated through the whole period of excursion.
THE OUTCOME
CCOP-AIST/GSJ DelSEA Project plan to publish the scientific papers
presented at the two workshops during 2007 in a special issue of CCOP proceeding or international journal within 2008-2009 and request the contribution from participating countries to submit their papers not later than March 2008.
This workshop was giving good opportunity on establishing of the expert network on coastal erosion and coastal geology of the region. Member Countries shown an interest to continue with the second phase of DelSEA project and requested for the assistance from AIST/GSJ to conduct special training and/or workshop on coastal
geology in order to gain more knowledge for coastal erosion assessment and mitigation measure as the ultimate goal.
