Missional DENTAL TRAININGWhat exactly is a missional dental residency? The CMDA Dental Residency is a strategic partnership between CMDA and Christ Community Health Services in Memphis, TN. The residency focuses on training dentists who feel called to serve the marginalized.

Dr. Jeff Amstutz serves as the Dental Director for CMDA, as well as director for the residency program at Christ Community. According to Dr. Amstutz, each dental resident is trained in discipleship, community engagement through incarnational living, and excellent dental care for the underserved. Each dental resident completes a training program through Lutheran Medical Center AEGD Residency. After completing the program, dentists enter two years where they work as a dentist at Christ Community

Health Services, participate in an international rotation, learn about practice management, and help to train other residents. In addition, there is a specific educational track to allow residents to be highly equipped to function as dentists in

clinics for the medically underserved and teach dentists the skills to pioneer a new clinics or dental ministry.

The larger CCHF community will benefit greatly from this training ground for missional dentists. Many clinics are

expanding services to include dental, and there are many longtime CCHF partners which solely focus on meeting patients’ dental needs.

“Upholding the Vision” A CCHF Classic Republished

In the early 1990s, David Caes and the CCHF staff worked tirelessly to compile a collection of essays to inspire medical students to use their medical training to serve the poor. Over the last twenty years, this book has had a major impact on the lives of medical students and residents, and has helped to guide them into our ministry among the marginalized.

For the past twelve months, the CCHF staff has carefully crafted a significant revision for the upcoming third edition. We have allowed authors to update each article and added a number of new articles from important “voices” in our movement; these additions have almost doubled the length of the book.

Keep your eyes open for details on how to get a copy of the third edition— more information will be forthcoming! Our prayer is for this book to be a lightpost for future generations of medical providers in training.

clinics at a glanceThree hundred clinics nationwide are striving to deliver distinctively Christian healthcare to the poor. There’s almost always two or three dozen groups in various stages of development. Here are three clinics who are a valuable part of our community. Christ Community Health Services (Augusta GA) Expanded facilities and services to care for the whole person.

Augusta’s “Widow’s Home” is undergoing quite a transformation. The beautifully restored building, which historically served as a home for widows and women in need, is the site for a significant renovation to complete the 2nd and 3rd floors. According to executive director Jeff Drake, the first floor of the building already serves as CCHSA’s second clinical site, and the expansion will allow Christ Community to expand services to include an 8 chair dental clinic, a physical therapy suite, a patient education center, and space to precept students and residents.

Christ Community Health Services is a Federally Qualified Health Center in Augusta, GA, and was founded in 2007 by Dr. Robert Campbell and Dr. Grant Scarborough. In addition to the expansion of space and services, CCHSA has secured a cottage to serve as student housing. This housing will allow CCHSA to expand their student rotation program and extend the opportunity for clinical rotations to students and residents nationwide. Pray for CCHSA as the expansion continues— for funding and the space, for expanded services, and for a growing opportunity to extend Christ’s call to medical students across the nation.

Individuals who donate to CCHF provide most of the resources to help grow and support this movement. Yet only 1 in 12 people in CCHF give financially. Even a small regular gift makes a huge difference in our joint ability to reach more students, open more clinics, and encourage more providers who care for the poor.

Remember CCHF in your holiday giving!
