The Neighborhood Christian Clinic: Caring for Arizona’s Urban Heart

The Neighborhood Christian Clinic was founded in 1999 through the work of a small group of committed providers. Dr. Paul Lorensten, one of the founding physicians of TNCC, describes his experiences as a medical student rotating through Lawndale Christian Health Center (Chicago, IL) as a critical experience in the formation of The Neighborhood Christian Clinic. The clinic has recently entered into formal relationships with medical training programs to allow increased access to student rotations. Dr. Lorensten notes, “Students’ experiences can be critical to their call to using their profession to advance Christ’s kingdom.”

The mission of TNCC is three-fold— (1.) Excellent medical care for the uninsured population of Phoenix (2.) Intentional spiritual care (3.) Ongoing involvement of medical professionals and intentional discipleship of volunteers in how to share the Gospel. Spiritual care is an integral part of the vision of The Neighborhood Christian Clinic. Bilingual cards with scripture addressing topics such as anxiety, poverty, parenting issues, suffering, and trust, just to name a few, are available in racks at the clinic, so that every patient has access to them. In addition, volunteers, including volunteer providers, are regularly trained to share the Gospel with patients. This allows the clinic to mentor medical professionals who want to learn to share the Gospel with patients in the exam room. Pray for The Neighborhood Christian Clinic as they formalize their spiritual care model into an academic curriculum, and as they continue to provide excellent care for the underserved in Jesus’ name.

Individuals who donate to CCHF provide most of the resources to help grow and support this movement. Yet only 1 in 12 people in CCHF give financially. Even a small regular gift makes a huge difference in our joint ability to reach more students, open more clinics, and encourage more providers who care for the poor.
