by Kathy ReandeauIf you’re looking for a way to introduce your younger
children to a faith that is life-giving and life-long, then you might want to think about letting them join the Awana Club at Bethany United Methodist Church. Awana is a Chicago-based organization that helps churches and parents work together to develop spiritually strong children and youth who faithfully follow Jesus Christ. Over 12,000 churches in the U.S. and more than 10,000 internationally run Awana programs that change young lives through Biblical truth. For 60 years, Awana has been a leader in children’s ministry, helping churches and parents worldwide raise youth to know, love and serve Christ. The founders of Awana derived the name from the first letters of “Approved workmen are not ashamed.” (2 Timothy 2:15). Awana clubs are rooted in the idea that children can have fun while learning God’s Word - that capturing a child’s sense of fun actually enhances his learning.
I met with Rev. Dorothea Schweitzer and Becki Howitt to learn how the program runs at Bethany. They told me that their small, yet faithful and quiet congregation which has been here for fifty years was looking for a community ministry. Rev. Schweitzer believes that the church has a “heart for children.” Based on her own daughter’s experience with Awana, she felt that Bethany would be able to use the program to make a life-long difference in children’s lives. She added that it was not inexpensive to begin, but the church had faith that it could be done. Their faith was rewarded and she believes the hand of God can be seen in that whatever resources were needed somehow managed to be found - whether it was money, people, or Bibles to give the children.
Their initial experience with the Awana Club lasted from February through May of this year, and they will start running it again on Thursday evenings beginning September 15. The response was positive, going from 6-32 members, and they are eagerly looking forward to resuming in the fall. They feel they have capacity for 60 children. Families do not have to belong to Bethany to participate in the club; children attended their program from other churches and even different denominations.
Current age groups include the Cubbies for children ages

three through kindergarten, Sparks for children in kindergarten through second grade and Truth & Training for children in third through sixth grade. The church may add older groups if there is sufficient interest. The once a week sessions last 90 jam-packed minutes. Each week when children arrive, they register and pay a small dues. The sessions start with a pledge to the U.S. flag and a Christian flag, then the children are off to engage in stories, games and handbook time. Each week closes with children being recognized for their achievements. Parents are encouraged to attend the awards portion of evening.
Pastor Schweitzer is Commander of the Club and Becki has become known as the “awards lady.” Children can earn awards for a variety of accomplishments such as learning Bible verses, attendance, bringing a friend, or finishing their handbook. Awards vary by age group, and children are very proud to receive them. Cubbies might receive a lamb or elephant for their vest, Sparks might receive wings or jewels, and Truth & Training children might receive a Streamwood dog. Becki said that it’s great to see how thrilled the children are with their accomplishments. They take this very seriously and work hard to earn their awards.
Pastor Schweitzer said that Awana is a fun way to introduce children to faith and a way to help parents raise their children in a faith that is livable. She feels the club does make a difference for the children. Adult leaders are able to provide role-modeling of the Christian faith. Children are receiving the attention and respect of adults who truly care and will listen to them. She said she most enjoys when she can connect heart-to-heart with a youngster. If one of them is having some type of problem, for example, she might say, “What do you want me to ask God for you?” and that gets them thinking about what faith can do for them.
The costs to parents to have their children participate in the program are minimal - fifty cents per session for Cubbies and Sparks and $1 per session for Truth & Training. If a child joins the club, parents are asked to purchase a reasonably priced shirt or vest. When they join, children receive their handbook and a Bible. They are welcome to bring friends, but asked to
pay the appropriate amount for their guest’s age group.
According to the Commander’s Handbook, Moses wanted the Israelites to remember their responsibility to obey God’s Word and teach future generations to do the same. At Bethany United Methodist Church, they are using the Awana Club to teach children about faith and values. Anyone who thinks this might be a great way to introduce their child to a loving and caring faith community is welcome to call the church for further information or to attend one of the club meetings.

As ministries of Pendleton Center United Methodist Church, Genesis Mom’s Morning Out and Preschool programs exist to provide your children with a quality Christian experience. Recognizing each child as a unique individual, we seek to provide a comfortable atmosphere in which to grow, thus allowing each child’s development to blossom in a natural way. Both programs are run by our experienced and dedicated Christian
teaching staff. All children are admitted, without regard to race, color or creed. Classes generally follow Starpoint’s calendar.
Genesis Mom’s Morning Out is a Toddler program for children 1 & 2 years of age. This program is designed to enhance social and emotional growth. Little ones have fun playing with others, growing social skills, and strengthening their large motor skills in our spacious gym. Trained and nurturing adults
supervise and care for your child while you get some time to yourself to relax or run errands! We are now accepting applications for Fall 2011.
• Program hours are Monday & Friday, 9am - noon.
• Tuition: Full time (M & F) $65/month; Part time (M or F) $35/month.
• The program runs September 12, 2011 - June 8, 2012

Genesis Preschool is for children 3 years of age - 6 years of age. Our preschool is well known in the district for our talented teachers and great program to build kindergarten readiness skills. This program helps children build and develop social and emotional skills, large motor and fine motor skills, and build skills
for learning concepts such as language development, recognition of shapes, letters, numbers, opposites, patterning, writing, and counting. We help enhance and develop all the skills needed to well prepare your child for kindergarten. Some of our classes are full; however, we still have openings in the following fall 2011 Preschool classes:

KenTon Meals on Wheels serves seniors and the disabled in the Town of Tonawanda and the Village of Kenmore. We are volunteered-powered. Over 50 volunteers a day make our service a reality.
We are able to provide meals 7 days a week. We deliver meals Monday through Friday between 11:15 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. Weekend meals are frozen and delivered on Fridays. We serve delicious home-cooked meals made daily in our own kitchen. We offer a variety of diets to accommodate the needs of our seniors.
Volunteers are always welcomed. Those who serve at KenTon Meals on Wheels not only have the satisfaction of knowing they are making a difference in our community. They also make friends and have fun while volunteering here!
