    WELCOMETOCOURSEI

INTRODUCTIONWelcome to CROSSTraining or Corps Cadets.

As the counselor, youre the key to making this an

exciting and meaningul experience or your corps

cadets. Your preparation and involvement in the

active learning process o each unit is critical!

A corps cadet is a young Salvationist

who undertakes a course o Bible

study and leadership training [...] in

order to grow spiritually and become

better equipped or eective servicein The Salvation Army (O & R for

Corps Cadets in the USA 2009 edition).

    CROSSTraining or Corps Cadets is

not solely a Bible study; however,

the study o Salvation Army doctrine

has its oundation in the Bible. This is

where the corps cadets learn about

The Salvation Army, including its history

    and doctrine. It provides opportunities

    or leadership development through

the Practicum Units. The goal is thatcorps cadets will become lietime

    Salvationists with a knowledge o

what The Salvation Army is and what

the Army belies are, who will give

    leadership in their local corps.

This manual is or the corps cadet

counselor. There are no books or

corps cadets; copy the handout sheets

in this manual or their use.

Each course includes units written by

The Salvation Army and by Bareoot

    Ministries (the youth division o

    Nazarene Publishing House). It also

    includes material or Corps Cadet

    and Candidate Sunday.

    CROSSTraining units include three

lessons. This gives an extra meeting

    each month to address leadership

    training, service, special corps event

planning or to review the unit and

prepare the corps cadets to complete

    the Checkpointpages. To ensure

those extra meetings have meaningulactivities, a section oBonus Ideasis

included at the end o each unit.

The lesson material is designed to

provide options that allow you to adapt

the material to t your brigade. Corps

    cadets come rom varied backgrounds:

    rural, urban, middle class, poverty,

large corps, small corps, etc. so no

single approach is going to work or

all. You need to choose what approachto the material will work best or your

    corps cadets.

Feeling there is too much material

    provided? Remember, you dont have

to use all the material, but some

    the skills and knowledge gained

    during the leadership unit.

    The ministry practicum will

    address the desire or practical

    leadership training.

Every corps cadet will need a Bible

or each lesson. The Bible is the main

    textbook or all CROSSTraining units.

Unless noted, the New InternationalVersion (NIV) is used; however, its

appropriate to use the New Century

    Version CROSSTraining Bibles i you

    have them.

    Monthly Reportsand Checkpoint

(question) pages are at the end o

each unit. Copy these or each corps

cadet in your brigade. Please note

that Level I and II pages are dierent.

An additional page has been addedin order to provide more space or

DISCIPLESHIPOne o the goals o the corps cadet program is to

develop lielong disciples. To do this theres an

    emphasis on:

    Personal devotions

    Stewardship, including the tithing

    o time, talents, and treasure

    Evangelism, reaching out to others

Counselors should encourage the corps cadetsto develop these spiritual disciplines and, in their

own lives, be good examples in each o these

    disciplines.

The personal devotions section o both Level I and

Level II is based on SOAPs(Scripture, Observation,

Application and Prayer). The corps cadet is to:

Read the Scripture given in the

    Personal Devotionsbox.

Write out an observation on thatScripture (i.e., What stands out in

    this Scripture portion?).

Write out an application o that

Scripture (i.e., How can this be

    applied to their lie?).

Pray over what they read and ask

or Gods guidance in putting it

    into practice in their lie.

    SOAPs WORKSHEET

In an eort to help corps cadets meet the require-

ments or the SOAPs, weve added a monthlySOAPs

Worksheet. The corps cadet counselor should make

a copy o this worksheet or each corps cadet and

distribute them the rst week o the month. The corps

cadets should take this worksheet home with themto remind them o what they need to do outside o

class to complete the requirements or the personal

    devotions section.

The worksheets give the SOAPsScripture or the

month and include space or the corps cadets to

write their observation and application o that

Scripture. Also included is the reminder to pray

specically about what they read and how to

    apply it to their lives.

The SOAPs Worksheetis a tool or the corps cadetsand doesnt need to be submitted to the divisional

corps cadet counselor and wont be graded.

SOAPs Bible Studiesare also available on

www.saysoaps.com, created by the USA Western

    Territory o The Salvation Army.

    COACHS CORNER

The corps cadet counselor determines each corps

cadets class participation points. Class participation

includes attendance at corps cadet classes, attentiongiven during the class, and participation in discussions

    and learning activities.

The counselor will look over the Weekly Workout

points to ensure they are lled out correctly. The

counselor then records the points earned in both

    the Weekly Workoutand theDiscipleship section.
