Of the 38 off-site games, 18 of them fall outside of the border of California, including a foursome of games south of the border in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. SENIOR STARS: California Baptist University seniors Caitlyn Lloyd and Brittany Galvez were named to the 2020 Preseason All-Western Athletic Conference squad on Wednesday. The honors come after Lloyd and Galvez were named to the All- WAC second team last May after the completion of their first season of Division I competition. EXPERIENCED PLAYERS...: The Lancers will return seven starters from last season, led by seniors Caitlyn Lloyd, Mackenzie Budinger, Brittany Galvez and Deanna Alarcon. The four have combined for 188 starts, a .336 batting average and accounted for 37.6 percent of the offense in 2019. ...AND NEW FACES: The 16 newcomers will work to fill a significant void left by the 12 players who departed after last season. Transfers bring in a wealth of experience that will allow them to contribute right away in key positions. Abby Robertson at shortstop, Ali Belloc on either side of her and Tiana Patrick behind the plate are virtual locks for significant innings of work. Freshmen Katelyn Mangrello, Nicole Stark and Deja Westbrook have all shown early flashes of promise and are likely to see significant playing time in February at their respective positions. PRESEASON PICK: CBU was picked to finish in fourth-place in the WAC in the conference’s preseason poll. The Lancers went 21-33 in their inagural D-I season and 8-10 in the WAC to take fourth in the conference. Seattle U was picked as the preseason favorites after winning the title the year before. Grand Canyon received two first place votes in the poll landing them in second place while NM State rounds out the top-three. FRESH FACE OF THE WAC: Freshman Katelyn Mangrello earned the Western Athletic Conference Hitter of the Week award on March 2 nd after leading the California Baptist University offense in the team’s home opener against San Diego State and five games at the Ole Miss Classic in Oxford, Mississippi. Mangrello hit .524 (11-21) during the week while recording six runs batted in, a run scored, her first career home run and the game winning RBI in extra innings against Jackson State. In total, she had 22 plate appearances last week without a strikeout and throwing out three would-be base stealers. OFFICIAL USAGE: As California Baptist University increasingly receives national attention through the achievements of our athletics teams, it is important to remem- ber correct name usage.
